Thread: STARFIELD |OT| No Man's Skyrim
Official Thread
Immediately checked out on seeing you have to build villages. Garrisons and settlement building are a cancer on Bethesda-esque games. I just want to quest and explore, I despise this building shit.

Tbh I haven't been touched the town building yet. Maybe I'm too early in the game? Levelling my weapon and acrobatic skills is entertaining enough for now.

I just despise the system if it has a heavy feedback loop into other game systems, i.e. required gameplay OR not necessary to do but heavily encouraged. Starfield wasn't too bad in that regard but Fallout 4 was atrocious.

Let be fair here.

No game I can match Fallout 4's "another settlement is under attack" spam

There are already mods that have fixed every single QoL issue I had with the game, and I'm having a blast with it. Asteroid mining, and junk recycling gives you all the resources you will ever need to not even bother with the settlement system if you don't want to. The quickstart mod puts you on Jemison right from the get-go, skipping the entire intro. There's a 'cheat' for ships that I'm only going to use for bugfixing (teleporting to the ship, etc.) that also allows you to hack the registration, perfect for Crimson Fleet roleplay. There's also the Pilgrimage Perk Overhaul that straight-up makes everything about progression much better feeling.

Spent over 100 hours with vanilla last year, and enjoyed my time with it, but I felt I was done. Now I can see how this game can last a long time.

Got a mod to fix that borderlands loot tier?

Bethesda should incorporate most if not all of this as an Official Fan Super Patch.

JESUS CHRIST... I never knew the npcs in this game looked like they came from a horror movie.

Thanks a lot Bethesda. Unless you fix things in the next Elder Scrolls, I'm not buying another game from you lest I get nightmares.

The game doesn't honestly look like that.

Sanpaku eyes, everywhere.

Everybody saying Concord is one of the biggest flops in videogames, but I don't know. Wouldn't Starfield be the bigger flop? It was hyped for years and was likely one of the big reasons Microsoft bought out Bethesda. To see release to such little fanfare and engagement from players is for me a bigger insult than what Sony did with Concord.

Starfield was still played by millions, cost less to make and can be purchased right now. Concord cost more to make, sold like 25k copies (?), and was delisted. Sony also purchased the Concord studio.

Starfield is a let down of a game but probably still made money.

But did it make the same impact as an Elder Scrolls or a Fallout title? A Bethesda game should be in the same league as titles like Grand Theft Auto or Final Fantasy.

All I've heard of Starfield is how much of a middling experience it is and that they expected better from Bethesda.

You are comparing apples to turds.

(Starfield with Concord, if that was not clear)

Final Fantasy isn't in the best place right now 😜

I played Starfield for 60 hours and picked up the DLC. It is a decent game at times. At other times it is an average game. I enjoyed my time with it. It is disappointing when comparing it to other Bethesda games for sure, but it is not a horrible game. They experimented around with a lot of dumb stuff that didn't work. I think they take the game as an experimental project that didn't fully work and improve things for the next Elder Scrolls game. It's hard for most companies to pump out a giant hit every time.

Concord ate a 400M loss and was delisted in a week. Starfield is not in that league or even close to it.

For what it's worth I've been playing Shattered Space and it is excellent so far. The first mission in zero g is one of the best in the game, lots of Prey & Alien vibes. The city of Dazra is huge with lots of interesting NPC's, side quests and things to do. All the dungeons, locations and places in Va'Ruun'kai are hand crafted which makes the whole expansion way more engaging.

I obviously liked Starfield a lot but I can also recognized that Bethesda made a ton of mistakes in this game. Most of the planets are just boring to explore, they all have the same points of interest which is ridiculous. I have yet to see a planet with a huge waterfall, or a river that flows into the sea, or a big volcano erupting. The procedurally generated technology really falls short.

But hey if they keep releasing expansions like Shattered Space I'll be happy. The expansion is really good so far.

Starfield still has loads of potential. It's actually a fun game, but you really gotta let go of some expectations and enjoy the game that is in front of you.

That said, I've had little desire to go back and play what's there because of the promise of the updates. And the updates so far aren't giving me reason to dive back in. This is a game I think I want to wait a few years and then dive into the more complete product.

There's little reward to playing games near launch in modern day gaming...

What I liked about Fallout 4 was having to scavenge and conserve materials, craft drugs and food, build the bases up to get access to higher tier weapon and armor crafting, and shit like that.

Is there a gameplay loop like that present in Starfield? Or is it just Bethesda's slightly cumbersome shooting controls paired with no reason to explore or collect anything?

So what you're saying is, you don't find The Wild and Wacky Tales of Ugly Negroes and Various Other Ethnics in Space™️ to be an engaging or inspiring hook?

Was shocked to see the DLC out without any acknowledgement. I did enjoy Starfield for a good bit but the exploration was just so soulless there wasn't much reason to finish/replay for me.

It's fair to say Starfield was and is a total flop. IMO it's far worse than Concord because this was basically MS's major console gem and it completely failed to deliver on the long awaited hype.

They could build off of the core game and truly make it a 5-10 year franchise if they DLC's are good but I'm on a wait and see going forward.

Far worse than a 400 million dollar piece of shit that sold 4 copies and was pulled within a week? No.

Starfield should have been Elder Scrolls/Fallout set in a single/couple of handcrafted star systems instead of 1,000 procedural planets. Loading screen after loading screen just to get from point A to point B anywhere kills the game.

Also feeling like a neutered watered down Mass Effect with none of that series quality, writing and grit.

I love Oblivion and Skyrim but the setting did nothing for me. Then I read about the gay DEI shit so it was a hard pass.

Considering the source material that heavily inspired the game's design, you wouldn't get away with just a couple of handcrafted star systems. You need like a dozen of them. It wouldn't have been hard to do because many planets are just not that interesting beyond the starport and maybe a city or two and a few main features.

But I do feel that this is where Starfield misses the boat. I kind of feel like after about six large populated planets, there's not really much else as far as handcrafted worlds. It's not bad. It's still quite good. There's just a certain feel or itch that is missing. Travel from planet to planet feels like loading screen instead of traversing a system.

I refunded the DLC. While I enjoyed my time with Starfield mostly, after around 60 hours I felt I had more then enough. The DLC is more of the same. They created a handcrafted map, which is nice. But didn't really fix any other issues with the game. The characters are still dull. Loot is bad. Meaningful choice isn't really there. Enemy variety sucks. Instead of fighting endless spacer guys it is now glowing human guys. I was kind of hoping they would fix some of the issues with the game. But they just made a new square map to deliver the same type of content again.

Seeing as how the patches and DLC since release haven't really done much to fix the games issues they should probably move on fully to the next Elder Scrolls game while hopefully having learned a few lessons.

I have played through Starfield 3 times already. I will wait for more DLC and updates before I jump in again. Hopefully we get more than just annual DLC. They need to make exploring more fun and add some unique experiences that you stumble upon randomly instead of constant procedurally generated factories.

Edit: Add alien races please!

Have you dived into modding the game yet? Some of the survival mods make exploring a lot more interesting and fun to me. But I do agree, there is a major lack of "reward" for doing anything in this game really.

Huh. The DLC quest chain isn't triggering for me. Using a safe from right before entering into the infinity or whatever the fuck they called it, jumped around to a few random systems and nothing has triggered yet. Steam tells me the DLC is definitely installed. Weird.

EDIT: Jumped to a couple more systems and it finally triggered. Played for around an hour. Seems interesting so far. Disappointed that to this point Andreja has little/no unique dialogue. I've had her with me for the DLC so far, and my character married her earlier. But the game seems to be treating it as if Var'uun has no relevance to/for her. Lame.
