The two movies facing off for your vote today are:

Sin City (2005)

The Seven Samurai (1954)

I like Sin City but it's not even close. Seven Samurai is the original action movie and it holds up very well.

seven samurai is something I need to check out someday. Medival japan (whenever it was) is pretty a very interesting time period to say the least.

I also would like to watch it someday. I was trying to buy it a year or two ago, but it was hard finding a physical copy in stock in Australia for some reason. I'll just rent it out on iTunes to see it I guess.

Seven Samurai is a great film. Not my favorite Kurasawa Samurai flick, but its still phenomenal and everyone should watch it. IMO the first half of the film is where its at. The building the band feels so special.

For me, it's Mifune who carries the film.

Lol I enjoyed Sin City but it's not even close.

For a movie from 1954 and filmed in black and white, it's amazing how much Seven Samurai holds up today. It's an incredible achievement and shows you what a great filmmaker Akira Kurosawa really was.

For me, it's Mifune who carries the film.
He usually does. He is simply a brilliant performer. But I agree, his character is my favorite in SS. Though Shimura was also excellent.
Fun fact, Mifune was originally supposed to play the Master Swordsman Kyuzo (the part went to Seiji Miyaguchi), when Kurosawa realized that he needed a comic relief character to bridge the gap between the samurai and the farmers. So the character of Kikuchiyo was created and Kurosawa thought no one but Toshiro Mifune could play the part.

I thought the live action japanese films weren't distributed outside japan due to some weird stingencies or something.

I just looked today and apparently I have to import it from the UK. None of the streaming services in Australia have it. Very disappointing. 😔

*Hugs Criterion Seven Samurai Blu Ray*

One of the best films humanity has ever created. Toshiro Mifune is the Japanese equivalent to Sean Connery in being a man's man. I might watch it tonight again, now that I think of it.

I have that Criterion Blu Ray too and its awesome. For Kurosawa, Criterion is pretty good, though some films like Stray Dog only got a DVD release. I am hoping they remedy this at some point. (same for their John Woo films)

Seven Samurai Criterion is very old. Movie could use another restoration. Ikiru Criterion looks quite a bit nicer.
