Thread: Phil Spencer claims PlayStation wants to grow ‘by making Xbox smaller’
Yeah, fair enough. I'm also not a huge fan of Microsoft's first party output for, well, the last decade. Lots of people out there who love Halo, Gears, and Forza, though, so more power to them I suppose.
Most people that loved Halo and Gears hate the newer entries more than me, or so it seems.

The last decade is precisely the time frame when the games Phil Spencer was in charge of were releasing.

I'm the opposite of @nominedomine really. A lot of Sony's exclusives fail to tickle my pickle or give me that "I need to play that!" reaction

Actually, I'd go out on a limb and say my favorite modern titles are usually multi-platform:

Witcher 3, Tekken 7, Red Dead Redemption 2, Fortnite, Doom 2016, Monster Hunter World, Dragon Quest Builders 2, Skyrim Special Edition, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, the recent NHL games, etc

I spent most of last gen on PC to be fair, only bought my One S when my GPU shit the bed and I was waiting for the RTX cards to drop

>when you play on pc and cant even bother to pirate

Piracy was a lot cooler and more fun back in the 90s/00s. Easier to search for and get due to a less centralized Internet and also often a better experience than buying retail (no to have a CD in the drive, etc.). These days, it's just a lot more convenient to go the legit route while being way more affordable than back in the day.

Well, this is interesting, I fully agree with you on this.

I liked the earlier entries of those series and they are fucking horrible now. Gears especially. 4 and 5 SUCKS really bad.

I also agree with Teezzy on this. Sony's first party output in the last 2 console generations doesn't do it for me, but many multiplatform stuff is interesting.

Well, I had that reaction, but then when I finally got around to owning a PS4 those hopes were largely deflated. Only TLOU1&2 really lived up to my hype and the other games I've tried have been hit and miss. Certainly I don't see that they are in any way superior to multiplat games except for maybe production values. I might be preaching to the choir though as Sony games didn't do terribly well in the GOAT competition here.

This is not a claim that Xbox exclusives last gen have been better btw.

Seems pretty clear he used to like what was released on Xbox, but hasn't been impressed in quite some time. This is honestly a pretty widely shared sentiment that can be easily observed
And many people are unhappy with Sony's "cinematic 3rd-person shooter" focus. It is what it is. But Microsoft's 1st-party output is fine. Next year will be better, for Starfield alone.

They didn't release a single triple a game this year. Sorry the text adventure pentiment doesn't count. That was made for 40 bucks and a bag of funyuns. If that's "fine" to you or anyone I'm not sure this world has any hope left.

And next year there's at least one guaranteed quadrupla a-game coming and most likely more. Everyone has these off years.
I play on PC, all Xbox games are available to me. This thread is also about the Xbox dude talking about Sony.
... in response to Sony's bs.

This pissing match between corporations, and even more sad their fans, is getting tiresome. News flash, all of these companies are shady as fuck. They all do deals that hurt the consumer. Anybody advocating for any company and using mental gymnastics to support one more than the other needs a reality check.

Honestly, I think MS would be paying over the odds for AB tbh. Sure CoD is absolutely massive, but the plain truth is The Tick's entire strategy has been to mik the same IPs year in and year out and spend absolutely fuck all in developing any new IPs whilst simultaneously filling his pockets with absurd bonuses.

That cow has been milked dry at this point. Halo and Gears success was directly tied to Budgie and Epic involvement and those games aren't nearly as relevant now that the other less renowned MS studios have taken over, Halo couldn't even make waves as a F2P release.

I'm just looking at it from the scale perspective. MS bought Bethesda and got some great active IPs and some decent Studios for 5-6 Billion, but the jump up with AB is massive, but active development is non-existent. If I was Phil looking to recruit talent I'd have been all over buying say CDP and/or picking up the SE studios that got sold to the Embracer group for a steal, and then investing heavily in development.

No, MS and Sony are not the same. Sony is an asshole company permanently moneyhatting 3rd-party games to keep them from releasing on other platforms. They use cringe shit arguments like "Nintendo is for kids" to block the MS-AB deal. They enforce crass censorship and they killed their Japanese branches in favor of "cinematic 3rd-person shooters" from the West.

Meanwhile MS has created a platform that allows everyone to play modern games for a historially cheap price, at worst 10 bucks a month, if you're too lazy to find a better deal. All their 1st-party games are for free day 1, so even if they're a bit slow this year, the fact that Starfield will cost you nothing is positively insane. And that company wants to buy AB, meaning that all CoD-games and other AB-franchises like Diablo and Warcraft would be "free" day1, too.

There's a MASSIVE difference between MS and Sony at the moment. MS being utmost consumer-friendly, Sony being consumer-averse. Fuck anyone who tries to put them in the same basket.

I don't know about King so I'll ignore that part.

The output the Activision part in the last few years was pretty much just CoD and very few games outside of that, pretty much just Crash 4 and a few remakes.

The Blizzard part is the more interesting one, modern Blizzard seems to have gone massively downhill but their IPs are still pretty strong and they've done such a lazy job recently that it isn't hard to see the quality of their games improving (if well managed, something Phil Spencer doesn't seem good at all at doing). Blizzard still has a bunch of card on their sleeve if they get their shit together.

Not that it's going to happen but ideally the regulators would force ABK to be broken in 3 and sold separably. It would be the most reasonable approach.

There's LITTLE difference between MS and Sony at the moment. MS is not consumer-friendly and Sony is consumer-averse. Their in the same basket.

Nintendo is no exception they are not consumer friendly with their online subscription and unchanging 60 dollar price point for games like xenoblade2 that would be 20 bucks otherwise.
Phil Spencer literally praises the Switch at any given chance, he loves it. Meanwhile Sony is always pissy when it comes to the competition.
Do you not know microsofts anti competition history?

also you've forgotten they tried buying nintendo.

To finish this up these big three need something to shake up their power over the industry.

You're a massive idiot. If you refuse to acknowledge that Microsoft under Phil Spencer is a good, consumer-friendly company, VERY MUCH contrary to Sony, you've just given up on honest discussion. Keep on trolling.

There is no trolling in what I am doing. For a company as big as microsoft that was the last business cycle they'll keep doing it if allowed to do so. It only makes sense as windows becomes more archaic and dated.

I explained the situation. Read what's there. MS is the small fish in this current acquisition shenanigans. If you want video games to keep existing as they are, hope MS gets this deal done. The alternatives are much, MUCH worse.

You clearly cant disassociate the brand from the product. Do you really think Microsoft would have bene willing to burn cash for years on GP if they werent in third place?

Stop looking at these companies as your friend and understand the competition is what drives consumer focused moves. Not these corporations being good people.

No I don't want games to exist as they are I want them to evolve not replaster the same game 20 times over as they've done since the 90s with a different gui and costumes for the characters and to make things extremely clear you are the one who has put his head in the dirt like a flamingo whenever someone opposes your views.

and Lol at ms is the small fish in the pond. You don't even understand what your talking about pc gaming is bigger than ever they don't need xbox anyways they have windows isn't that enough for them? They should be improving windows gaming on windows to be as plug and play as a console but with the benefits of pc which is mostly accomplished.

You have a reading disability I assume? Never once did I call any company a "friend". I said the current MS is utmost consumer-friendly, Sony is consumer-averse.

And MS being in 3rd-place FOREVER is exactly proof why the AB-acquisition must be okay. Sony is the only one that would be negatively impacted by it. But does Sony have a god-given right to dominate over XBox? No, they don't. AB going to MS only means that PlayStation might be 3rd place in the future, forcing Sony to make more and better games themselves, rather than moneyhatting 3rd-party games. The gaming industry doesn't need a strong Sony.

idk were you there for all those pc games that have been released on these platforms since the 90s? Pc gaming is very much part of the video game market almost hand in hand. Most video games are developed in windows but the devs are not pleased with the direction their going with windows with shady stuff like tpm and linux is more developer friendly nowadays and doesn't require tpm protection that could make the os not run on a 5 year old computer its even scarier when you realize a lot of the myths about open source being insecure we started by this company. You ask my opinion we may be hopefully witnessing the end of one of the most antagonistic monopolies in existence.

GamePass has been an insane value for years. Bugger off, Sonytard.

Hint: its because they put out a product people want to buy in large numbers
Hint: And that's what MS is building towards.

In-before your fanboy reply: MS didn't have the luxury of joining the video game business when Sony did. No other company than MS could entered the market and survived for as long. Now they're finally done waiting for miracles and acquire the needed studios for a healthy future.

tl;dr: Fuck Sony
