Thread: Nintendo Switch's Lowest Resolution Games - Digital Foundry
Imagine if there's a Switch 2 and it doesn't have back compat. Just imagine.

That's all I want. Boring me. Just more Switch and then maybe even a proper VR HMD thing with it or something. Whatever gimmick they want, but just do a more powerful Switch, everyone who has a current Switch will buy it like everyone updates their phone, the sales will be phenomenal and everyone will be happy.

With good porting studios, the resolution doesn't need to be crippled to 480p or lower. There is a lot you can do to make a game run well with less power, but it seems the easier option is just to do a poor job and leave it at that. To be fair, sometimes even Nintendo games drop the ball as well, like their Super Mario 64 port in recent years.

Only time the Switch's low res bothered me was when XC2 first came out and I wanted to see it portable. Prior to that I thought the discrepancy in image was due to my tv's settings.

I likely won't be buying Nintendo's next system anyway.

The one Ray of hope in regards to Switch 2's backwards compatibility is the fact one of the first things the current head of Nintendo said was that he wants to take an Apple like approach to their hardware, with all systems going forwards using the same software and storefront.

Given the enormous success of the Switch, and evergreen nature of so many of their titles, I can't imagine they'd want to start over from scratch, or waste money porting games like MK8 when they likely don't need to spend any money porting it for it to keep selling.

Mario Kart 9 release date 2035 confirmed. If people keep buying 8, they will keep selling it. Its like GTA 5 but for Nintendo.

Nintendo is now 2 generations behind the competition. What a joke. Porting to Switch must be like porting 360 game to DS.

I do not want to. I really, really do not.
I wouldn't worry about it. 0 chance.
almost 0

It's like 1 and a half gen difference. Switch is like a midway point between PS3 and 4, but the newer switch architecture helped.

Still... Imagine returnal on switch, bleh.

I wouldn't even be remotely surprised if it didn't. Nintendo gonna Nintendo.

Eh, they've been pretty great with BC with their handhelds and with the GC-Wii-Wii U series. The only drops have been when tech and memory space just requires it. The Switch cards are pretty robust.

To be fair though the Switch is in the latter half of its lifecycle while the XSX and PS5 are new tech. Porting would be difficult for demanding games, but at least it is running on a NVIDIA architecture now. Porting to whatever custom engine the DS used would not have been a fun experience.

Based on MK and Splatoon DLC, its about 18 months away for the next Switch, which will launch with Mario Kart 4K and Splatoon GOTY 4K edition.

I think we get Zelda 2, maybe Odyssey 2, and Metroid which can carry the system for 18 months and then they launch basically a Steam Deck but almost 2 years from when it launched.

I would like to think a Xenoblade X Definitive Edition and a Xenoblade X-2 might be two of the mainline Switch 2 games, along with the heavily rumored/possibly even leaked next Fire Emblem and a new Etrian Odyssey supposedly in development?

I've seen rumors of a possible Donkey Kong in the vein of Mario Odyssey, Kirby and the Forgotten Land? Also would be really nice to see GrimGrimoire Once More west release, and info on Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake and Dragon Quest XII. XII has shown even less then Breath of the Wild 2 if possible.

Then there's the inevitable Pokemon Black/White remakes/remasters oh god I can't wait to see how they fuck them up. /s

As someone who values IQ a lot, I had to chuckle at the fact that resolution gets so low that AA isn't being used because it'll make the games look even worse.

The blurriness would melt my eyes. But it's year old portable hardware, so that's a given. Very curious about the next Switch version.

Honestly I think a Switch 2 with comparable power to the Steam Deck in 18 months could be way more capable than that would sound, purely because they're partnered with Nvidea now.

The better bang for their buck Nvidea offers, combined with built in DLSS cores, would likely mean they'd be able to undercut even the bargain £350 asking price for the 64GB SD, and deliver a great upscaled 4K image.

I absolutely want them to keep the roughly 720p screen for handheld mode though. Higher resolutions at that size are pointless, and just unnecessarily tax hardware and reduce battery life.

I would however like them to shift to the same aspect ratio and 800p screen as the SD. That extra height is flat out better for gaming, where having more of a view above/ahead of your character is simply an upgrade over the ratio designed for cinema and TV.

I was just wondering what you see in the Dragon Quest remakes, I've played the eshop version of 1, 2 and 3 and I don't really know what difference graphics would make. Is it something to do with the colour palette?

The 3 remake is using a Octopath/Triangle Strategy/Live-A Live graphical tier overhaul. I find every day that passes with zero info is extremely frustrating as there has been zero updates since 3 remake and 12s reveal a year ago.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with this. I believe that lowered resolution and fps is how BotW originally released, and it looked better overall as a result. Now, the game has a much smoother frame rate with generally improved resolution, but you can't see enemies until it's too late whenever you're gliding around. Something always has to give, and in most cases they're going to simply draw fewer things in order to keep the rest of the package looking clean and smooth, but this doesn't preserve gameplay, as I noted. I hate not seeing opponents from far off...

I dont think it will be exactly a steam deck but comparable in power. Nintendo is never on the cutting edge. Whatever they release will already be out of date by launch.

So a 2021 power level system launching in 2024 makes sense.

Hopefully there is a SSD and not some crazy flash drive or something

I just hope it still supports MicroSD cards. I don't want to go the way of the Playstation and Xbox, buying proprietary SSD's that are way too expensive.

There's no way they'll go with an SSD, either for internal or expansion.

Remember their core audience are kids and families, they are simply never going to encourage the option to take it apart and fiddle with innards. SD cards are a cheap, safe and easy way to upgrade storage, and rheres no way they'll use anything else.

Even the Steam Deck uses SD cards, and has demonstrated just how fast a storage medium they can actually be when leveraged properly with dedicated gaming software. Besides which, even with the SD utilising and allowing the upgrade of SSD's, they actively discourage doing so, despite their older and more tech savvy target audience.

As for power, I still predict the use of DLSS cores for installing meaning it will likely be slightly less powerful than the SD, but have much better upscaling to make it the difference in handheld mode, and robust cooling and upclocking to be far better performing in docked mode, especially on a 4K screen.

Yeah, I'm not sure I understand the argument against or disdain for micro SD cards. Flash storage is flash storage whether it's in an SSD package or it comes as micro SD. It's entirely up to Nintendo to make this as fast a solution as is currently available.

I've been happy with the cheap storage upgrades for Switch. 😆
