Thread: Best game you've never beaten?
Hey D-padders! Was reflecting on my unfinished games backlog, and thought...what's the best one of the games I have started yet not finished? For me...there's many choices, but as of this writing Onimusha: Warlords comes to mind. It's a sublime samurai version of classic RE and enjoyed most of my time with it before I got stuck on a boss 😂 so that's my pick! What say you, D-pad.life, what is the best game you haven't beaten yet?

I have so many great games that I bought and still haven't even played lol.

Regarding games that I actually started:
God of War on PS4 Pro
Stopped because the unlocked framerate was so inconsistent and I wait until I get a PS5 or until it releases on PC.

Mutant Year Zero - Road to Eden
Really liked it on PC, looked and played great. But then some heavy hitters got released and I stopped playing it. Need to pick it up again.

Dark Souls...GoTG for me (hundreds of hours logged across multiple playthroughs), but I just find I always lose interest in the final 3rd, put it aside and before you know it the old muscle memory is shot and it's time to restart. I think it's in keeping with the game itself that it's about perpetual return though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My wife and I started a Divinity 2 co-op game last year and probably got 2/3 of the way through. I'm not sure what happened to make us stop, but neither of us have mentioned jumping back in.

Glancing at my shelf.....Fallout 3 and Shining the Holy Ark for the Sega Saturn.

Most of the games that I've played, I didn't beat, but those two are on my list to go back and finish at some point.

Xenoblade Chronicles X too but that game will be beaten at some point, I only play it here and there cause it's so massive.

Dark Souls 3 - Just didn't click with me as much as the first two.
Dead Space 2 - I think I just got busy and dropped it for some reason. Definitely going to revisit.
MGS Peace Walker - After beating Peace Walker I just didn't feel like playing all those extra ops just to progress to the end. Got way to grindy for my taste.

Reminds me, forgot to continue my first run of Dead Space 1! >.<

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice - A fantastic game that I just don't have the energy to finish because of the high difficulty.
Divinity Original Sin 2 - Quite possibly one of the best RPGs I've played in years. I just couldn't be arsed to finish it because I kind of lost interest.

You and I both. Is the case with me and Bloodborne and Sekiro. I respect From's games but they're too much for me as of this writing 😅

Chrono Trigger - I rented this a few times on the SNES, haven't played it since, the memories keep it one of my favorite games.
Hollow Knight - This one is my own fault, I decided I wouldn't beat the game until I beat the arena and well... I haven't beaten the arena... gonna need to return to this one.
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts - Is it understandable that when the game told me I had to replay everything again with a new weapon to reach the actual final boss I'd stop playing? I think so!
EDF Franchise - Besides Insect Armageddon since it was short, I love these games but they usually have too many levels for me to actually beat them lol
Blood - Am I the only one who remembers this game as absurdly hard? I need to replay
Contra: Shattered Soldier - Like any good Contra game this is very hard
Dead Rising - I mean, the hours sunk into this match or exceed plenty of beaten games. Anyone who knows the design of this game maybe understands.
Mega Man Franchise - I can normally get to the final stages, usually known as the Wily levels, but beating them? LOL
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - I spent over 100 hours enjoying this but the warnings about the bad ending kept me from finishing.
Metro: Exodus - Can't remember why I stopped, planning to get it again and do the enhanced edition patch, though.
Super Castlevania IV - This is one I missed as a kid and only got into fairly recently, this should mean things like save states and cheats help me beat it but I kinda played it during a marathon of older games where I kept switching things up and haven't returned yet.
Super Mario Bros. - I've certainly gotten close, also in Mario 2 and RPG I've reached the final boss
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - The story mode didn't do a lot for me, my 100+ hours were mostly spent just wandering around
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - This is one of those games my brother and sister hogged the N64 to play so often that I found myself unable to devote much of my own time to it.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - I was pretty close to the end I think, but I switched to PC for better framerates and such and the problem became doing all that crap again.
Blast Corps - This one gets pretty nail-bitingly hard the further you get.
Conker's Bad Fur Day - I was pretty LTTP on this and quite often switching to a new generation means I leave behind the last. I also remember having no clue what to do next where I was.
Darksiders - I remember reaching some very annoying enemy near the end and giving up.
Grand Theft Auto Franchise (Until IV) - The way these games controlled in firefights and the way cars liked to flip over and explode meant I didn't beat them until those controls changed.
Ninja Gaiden - You know, normally I'd just move on with my life, something like a DMC 3 I only sort of enjoyed so having so much trouble meant I could just leave it be, but I thought this game was fucking great so not being able to beat it or even get very far really annoyed me.
Resident Evil: Code Veronica - I was on the final boss, very annoying battle.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice - Normally I'd leave this off this list because I plan to give it more time and attention eventually but it is noteworthy as the only Soulsy game I gave up on.
Sanitarium - I made it to the final disc and then the game wouldn't play. I guess my brother had done something to my sister, forget what, but her revenge was to scratch up JUST disc 4 of this game not realizing it was MY game not HIS.
Turok Franchise - I loved these games, especially the first two but yeah... never beat them, maybe the new editions will be my chance.

So, that's pretty much everything I'd claim to be a "big" fan of that I haven't finished.

😂 Didn't think you could top that long ass reply to one of my previous threads but you just did and then some! Might as well have made this topic or a similar one with the sheer detail of this reply!

Nioh 2. F'king loved the game, but got burned out towards the end there. Right before a supposedly really tough boss, too. Now, every time I think about jumping back in, I ponder how much I likely suck now and how f'ing tough that boss is gonna be, and my brain just goes, "Eh...maybe another day..."

Bit of a tough one for me. I don't really stop playing games I really enjoy.

Cheating a bit but I'd go with Disco Elysium. Only stopped because I changed over from PS5 to PC. It's alot of text to read again if I rebought it. Maybe one day.

Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

First let me say, I do NOT like platformers. I suck at Platformers. But Ori is special and exceptional and so I made and exception and tried to play these games. I only bought Ori and the Blind Forest to support the devs and because it was so incredibly beautiful. I didn't really intend to play it but I gave it a shot and even though I sucked, the game was so good, it sucked me in to keep trying. I only got I think about halfway through it, right before the Ginsu tree and gave up I was sucking so bad and having such a frustrating time with it.

With Ori WotW I got as far as the sandworm boss and after a million tries to do that long hateful platforming sequence I finally gave it up. It made me so sad to quit as I had collected almost everything and I'd enjoyed the game immensely. It was actually one of my favorite games last gen. Ori made me wish I didn't hate platformers, maybe I would have played more of them and been better at them. Maybe someday I'll go back and play it again and beat that damn hateful Sandworm. 😭

Vagrant Story comes to mind. I loved that game but it fucking kicked my ass every time I played it. I eventually gave up and moved on.
That is my choice, cause i tried it 3 times at different times until i finally "got it". So rewarding, i loved it.

Tied for second is Chrono Trigger and FF6.

Super Mario RPG

I just couldn't get past Exor the giant sword boss If memory serves me right. Was close to the end but not the very end I think (been 25 years!) No matter what I did I couldn't level my parties up enough to clear him in the 3-day Block buster rental. I dont often finish games (prolly < 40%), but this game was exceptional and regret not being able to finish it in its glory days.

Resident Evil 4

I've tried a dozen times over the past 15 years and have just never made it to the end.

Edit: Well… seeing as I've clearly offended someone I'll explain why.

When RE4 came out I was about 12 or so and me and my younger sister would play it but we'd always get too scared once we got to the castle 😂 we tried so many times but the chanting monks with the medieval maces scared the shit out of us.

Fast forward a little over a decade my sister spent 3 weeks in the ICU from a still undiagnosed auto immune attack. She almost died, it was pretty awful.
Once she was stable I brought my Xbox One and a monitor into her hospital room and we played RE4 together like when we were kids. We made it up to the boss fight with the army guy who can dodge all of your attacks except the knife 😒 but she was discharged and we still haven't had the chance to sit down and finally finish it. I promised her I wouldn't finish it until we could do it together, but she lives 3 hours away so it's kinda hard to get together long enough to do so.

She's gonna come stay with me and my wife for a bit over the summer so we can try then.

What a roller-coaster ride of 'reactions' from me. First I gave you the laugh reaction when I saw the mod edit, then I read your sister was in the ICU, so changed it to shocked, then saw she's now fine and you're going to try again this summer, so I changed my reaction a third and final time to a like. Next time I should just read the whole damn post first. :ROFLMAO:

Days Gone and the Witcher 3. I like both, but fuck open world games. Too big, too long. Buku buku.
Curious, do you find the main story in these games to be too long or does your complaint include the things you 'could' do? Witcher 3 main story is listed at 52hrs average on HLtB, which *is* on the long end, but which I think is fine for a story-driven RPG.

I typically finish a game if I consider it good. The only one that comes to mind is Far Cry 3, which I stopped playing after my save data was corrupted and I lost about 7 hours or so. I was on the last island getting pretty close to the end so that really took the wind out of my sails, I didn't want to have to restart. I'll go back to it one day, it was an enjoyable experience

The last time I quit playing was when you take the elevator down and the leach dudes are walking around. It's a little ways after the big bat fight. At least that's how I remember it. Was probably two years ago now.

If you want some advice, one of the leech dude's weaknesses are the Molotov cocktails you can make using the gasoline and empty bottles, 1 Leech Man takes 3 Molotovs to take down. I try to exterminate the suckers whenether I encounter them

I'll give it another go again soon. I need to follow a walkthrough so I know where to find everything and how I should conserve things.

A ton of games, I have a bad habit of dropping games right in the last moments. My answer here will be Final Fantasy 7. It's by no means my favorite game in the series, but I dropped it right at the final dungeon. I was likely less than 30 minutes from beating the game.
