Thread: Wrist Watches |OT| Time Is Money
Official Thread
Our anniversary is coming up, and while I was at the eye doctor today we stopped in at Dillard's at Cool Springs Mall in Franklin and found out they were having a 25% off sale on all their watches, including Hamilton (in store only.) They had the blue face Spirit of Liberty in stock and my wife got it for me. Our anniversary isn't until December, but getting this fantastic watch for $800 instead of a grand from an AD is a sweet deal, and I figured this watch was pretty damn topical given current events. Alexander Hamilton's quote "Without Liberty, Life is a Misery" is etched into the leather strap. My wife rocks.

Here's a couple short clips of this very underrated watch:

I also got my 9/11 Luminox on Thursday and I'm bummed to report there's a problem with the bezel. It's loose and can be made to shake around by tapping it with your finger. So I have to send it back to Saltzman's Watches and make a decision: let them try to service it, send it to Luminox (which I think is the same as Saltzman's as they are a service center for Luminox), or return it and get a refund (as I'm sure there aren't any more of this watch around as it was a limited run of only 911 pieces.)

Congrats on that Hamilton! Looks very classy and elegant, I like it. Based wife.

What a shame about the Luminox though. To have such a big issue on a limited edition really sucks. I'd ask them to service it, usually fixing the bezel isn't a big deal. Worst case, they have to replace the bezel. Which takes a bit of time because they need to order a new one.

Thanks, man. Yeah, I'd been eyeballing the SoL for a while, and was actually going to buy one from a grey market dealer at some point, but the grey market prices have shot up to right near AD prices with a sale. I prefer buying from an AD because you get all the correct packaging and the factory warranty.

I'm hopeful it's just one of the retaining springs on the bezel with the Luminox. If I rotate the bezel, it's always loose at 6 o clock, so that's what it seems to be logically. Should be fairly simple in that case.

It says a lot about their quality assurance during production though, I'm always surprised that stuff like this gets through. I work for an automotive supplier and we have very strict quality control during and after assembly, even for cheap products.

I decided to not go for one of the many watches that I really like - instead, I go for the one that I love. The Omega Snoopy Award 50th Anniversary Edition. It'll take some years, but I started saving up for it. List price is 9.300, but it's so popular that even on reseller sites like Chrono24, it's around 30k. Which is absurd and I hope the situation gets better over time. Either way, I put aside some money every month and see how long it'll take me to make that purchase possible.

That's a beauty, man. I need to get focused like that. I spend a lot of my watch money playing small ball, and that hurts the budget for larger acquisitions like a Speedy.

My problem is that I'm a sucker for hard to find or limited run watches — any kind, could be a G Shock or an Omega. There's something extra cool about a hard to find luxury watch. You know based on price alone that not a ton of people own Omegas, and then when you take a watch like that Snoopy you know a very small fraction of the already small Omega base has one of those, and that is just cool.

I already have the H70555533 Khaki Field but don't tempt me lol… I'm a huge sucker for Hamilton and I don't have a titanium yet. I also really like the fauxtina'd numerals and hands along with red second hand, gives it some pop.

But yeah, my wife and I just got back from Knoxville hauling a multicade arcade cabinet in the bed of my truck and the week before I picked up the new Springfield SA35, if I try to buy anything else she's gonna shoot me in the face With my own gun Lol

One of the things I love about Hamilton is what a rich history they have in film; their timepieces have been in dozens of iconic films over the years and it's neat to see them segueing into gaming.

I was totally suprised to see this watch because I was like... Far Cry 6?? But cool to see a company going the modern route and explore such new ways. The watch itself is neat, I'm a sucker for red contrasts on watches.

I was in a store yesterday, randomly looking at some watches. Breitling, Tag Heuer, Glashütte etc but one watch stood out to me and stole the show.

It was the Oris Divers Sixty-Five Glow. Heritage old school look, but modernized in a cool way. It's called glow because even in daylight, it has that glowing look. The domed sapphire plays beautifully with the light, it looks really good.

Here's a very nicely shot video:

Let's see what the next year will look like financially speaking, maybe this one will join my collection.

Meant to post these once I had some free time. Got this for my anniversary a few weeks ago. It's the Hamilton Spirit of Liberty (I forgot to adjust the date when I pulled it out today, so it's off but oh well). Really like this watch; it's dressier than all my other Hammys, and I especially love the band with the inscription on it:

I'm also really glad I didn't move on the Aqua Terra, because I've decided (and this time it's final) to get a Speedy. I'm not sure which reference it will be yet; I'm going to go to the Omega Boutique in Green Hills and try a bunch on. But yeah, this year it's definitely a Speedmaster.

Wow that's a beauty! Love the blue dial, looks great. Also like the strap. Insane value for the price, that movement is very accurate and has 80h power reserve.

Why did you decide against the Aqua Terra? Tons of Speedmasters out there, curious which one you'll chose!

I was eyeing the Longines Legend Diver bluey such a gorgeous watch, especially in person. But that 52mm lug to lug and sharp edges at the "horns" turn me off. Tried it in a store and it is a clothes killer, really pokes holes in stuff.

Ultimately it felt like a dressier watch than I would prefer, and I very rarely wear dress clothes, so the SOL made sense at its price point, but it seemed wrong to spend $5k on a watch and only wear it once a year. The Speedy is so iconic and I have no chronos in my collection, and the style has really, really grown on me. Also, the first thing that turned me off the Speedmaster is now why I plan on buying one -- most watches I own are a particular model and series and that's it -- but there are a lot of different Speedmasters, and I like that buying one will require research and careful consideration, and that when I do finally own one it will not necessarily be the same one someone else is wearing as I pass them on the street. So ultimately: design, variety, and historical significance.

That's a great point. There are so many awesome and different Speedmasters out there, with their own stories and looks. I like too many of them. If I could, I would buy like 15 models lol

42mm White Hamilton Field Mechanical get!

I don't mind the bracelet, but it has no place on a field watch. Love the bead blasted finish; gives it a very tool watch appearance which it totally is. Ordering a Haveston A2 in green with a yellow, black, and white stripe. It'll look amazing. This is my first true mechanical watch and I find myself oddly looking forward to waking up and winding it every morning.

How many fucking Hamilton's do you own? 😂

My father owns a Grand Seiko Godzilla 65th Anniversary Limited Edition. Such a weird watch and fugly in my opinion. He loves that japanese design with all those sharp edges, loves japanese culture. Drives a Lexus and so on.

It's of amazing quality and came with a really nicely made Godzilla figure. The watch itself isn't my jam though. Comes with a red leather strap, which he replaced as you can see in the pics. The watch is made of highest grade titanium and features the Spring Drive movement, which is off by around 1.5 sec.... per month.

New watches from Omega...

Really like the green Seamaster 300. I like that they got rid of the small seconds Aqua Terra, but absolutely hate that they pared it down to 34 and 38. Love the new colors, too -- that red is fucking killer. Not sure how I feel about the new Speedmaster green gold; I still want a DSotM. The Speedmaster '57 looks great to me though. Planet Ocean Ultra Deep is kinda ridiculous, but still looks cool, aside from being as thick as a fucking tuna can. How many people will ever go a third of that depth? It's kind of a dick waving piece IMO, even though a handsome one.

Mhm I kinda... don't like any of the new ones outside of the Aqua Terra. The Ultra Deep is such a fat fucker lol.

Okay, this is fucking crazy. In a way, I feel it cheapens the brand, and ultimately cheapens the Speedmaster. But on the other, it's clearly designed to be fun and provide a gateway to other non-gimmick Omegas for people who might have otherwise not. And for someone like me, who is planning to buy a Speedy this year, this gives me (assuming I can find one) a chance to wear a Speedmaster on my wrist for just a couple hundred bucks and see if I like it. So yeah, if I can find one, I'll be getting the black one.

Thoughts?

Here's another video of them:

First reaction:
Wow I fucking hate it, why are they raping my favorite model from my favorite watch brand so hard. Looks like a McDonalds version of Omega.

But once the first impulse is over, the blue one looks pretty cool I have to say. At least it's unique, sporty but classy. The black one looks like a toy replica of the original, the other colors .... my 5 yo daughter would love them.

In general though, I don't know what to make of it. Feels like an Omega knock-off and kinda is one lol.

I'd say save the couple hundred bucks, go to a store and try one on your wrist. Put those couple hundred bucks towards a real one. If you like them and have good use for it though, for sport activities and such, I guess it would be as good as any other budget watch.

Yeah, I kinda feel like with luxury watches, brand IS everything. Rolex is not the most technologically amazing watch out there, but the brand is strong. Same with Omega, although I would argue Omega's technical prowess is much better than Rolex, but that's another discussion entirely. But yeah, you don't see Rolex doing this. I guess like the video points out, Breitling has done it with the endurance, but not to this degree, and I don't think Breitling is in the same class as Omega. They're a great company with a great lineup, but they're just not Omega. This is something you'd expect to see G-Shock doing, and in this topsy turvy world, here we have a $200 Omega and a $4000 digital square from G Shock LOL:

These are going to be very limited release and they'll probably sell out instantly, but I still wonder if the juice is worth the squeeze for Omega.

That 4k G Shock looks rad though, would rather want that than the Toymega.

Really feel like this will hurt their brand. My father in law who deals with luxury watches, is in shock after seeing this. Send me five barf emojis and asked if that's a satire, but that's too real and good looking for a fake video.

I'm a huge G Shock fan, but they missed the mark a bit with the MRG square. It uses the same module as the GMWB5000 and the "stealth wealth" GMWB titanium. The way the case is assembled and some of the crazy materials it's milled from are super cool, but 4 large is pretty crazy for it, they didn't even put a battery meter in it, something that has been missing from the 5000 series, and the micro adjustments on the band cheapen the watch somewhat; I'd have loved them to have done a push adjust feature as Omega and others have done with their bracelets considering the money involved puts them in that level of competition and fit and finish.

Dont get me wrong; I love the watch and will probably buy one if I can find one for around 3k (I bought the $1700 titanium 5000 and never once regretted it)

T3 and Jenni Elle weigh in on the MoonSwatch:

After giving this some thought, I don't think it's going to hurt the brand too much. Think about it... when you have a Rolex on your wrist, what's the first thing that someone asks you? "Is that real?" So the counterfeit watch market has made it so when someone sees a Rolex on an average Joe's wrist, they immediately wonder about its authenticity. Well, this kind of does the same thing, only Swatch did an end around and basically made an official fake, all the while making it so EVERYONE in the watch world is talking about this and Omega as a brand.

The other thing I was thinking is that just a few days ago, it was in the news that a man was knifed for his watch. Crime in cities is completely out of control, and when I go out in a not so safe area, I wouldn't think twice about putting one of these on, but I would my real Speedy when I get it later this year.

Many stories of people getting their Rolex stolen in big cities here as well. I used to visit the watch trade show in Munich, was there every six weeks. Got friends and family dealing with watches. Some big rollers.

At some point, many of them stopped going there because of the danger. It was being held in a hotel, and there were people with guns storming rooms, following traders on their way home and robbing them hundreds of kilometers outside of the city on piss breaks, even following them home.
