Thread: Windows 11 looks like hot garbage | Return of the Windows 8
I haven't watched yet and don't really care about upgrading any time soon. But what I will say is that there are people who hate every new version of windows every time one comes out.

Windows 10 worked beautifully for me on day 1 of them giving it away for free to Windows 8 users. And threads about it were full of people who claimed to have all these problems. Everyone also hated W8. There are people still clinging to dear life onto W7.

So it's always hard for me to trust any impressions of a new Windows because it feels like the default stance is always that change is bad.

The only issue I had with Windows 8 was the Metro menu aka full screen start menu. Outside from that - I loved it. 8.1 addressed that issue, sort of. Overall, Windows 8/8.1 was really stable OS. Windows 10 really improved all of that, is arguably the best OS since XP. Windows 11 however.. it really feels like a huge miss, honestly. It's ironic that it follows the typical Microsoft release tradition where every other version # is shit. XP good, Vista bad, 7 good, 8 bad (8.1 good), 10 good, 11 "bad". The thing about macOS that I think is appealing is that overall, the aesthetic has pretty much remained the same over the years. They've made a few minor tweaks, but it's largely the same look and feel since.. god I don't even remember the first release.

I'll upgrade after they work out most of the kinks. Maybe. Or if we get a ton of benchmarks showing a marked improvement in hardware/software performance. But, like @JuiceboxHero said, they have been consistently inconsistent over the years, so I won't be surprised if 11 ends up being a steaming pile. As for the features/design, it looks about like what I expected.

I'm liking the idea of the android integration somewhat because that would work well for certain apps I use, but a lot of this seems kind of cosmetic, although the different desktops as profiles thing seemed kind of neat, though I thought they sort of did that already in some fashion. Seems you have to have TPM active on your Rig to be able to install it, which required me to go rooting around in my system bios to enable, which seems like a huge flaw in all of this given I suspect most people don't have that enabled by default.

Gonna have to pass on that one. Win10 is good enough and already has too many "convenience" features that baby sit you like its your first PC and waste system resources. They could seriously not touch Win10 for the next decade (besides security patches) and no one would complain at all.

Holy crap you're right!

Maybe its by design. Make one so shit that People are forced to 'upgrade' to a new nice one in time that only better hardware can take advantage of. But keep People in the eco system by not shitting on them too much, just a little bit, a little bit of hot steamy shit on your face. Thanks Microsoft!

Personally, I can't be arsed to install the preview but maybe one of you ppl might want to give it a whirl?
I installed the Dev preview and… Honestly, after a few days of using it, I don't see anything super negative about it. It's alright. Nothing crazy, but it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be. Despite the changes it still feels familiar which is probably what they were going for.

Edit: One thing that I'm not entirely sure on is the TPM Module 2.0 requirement. I built a new computer last year with top of the line everything, except it apparently lacks that module so I won't be able to upgrade to Windows 11 until I install one. Due to the sudden interest, that module has sold out everywhere and scalpers are selling a $13 accessory for $150+. I found a site that will let you order it at $20 and it'll ship whenever it ships (shopblt.com) so we'll see how that goes.

I read something about new security stuff reducing game performance. Any truth to that? Either way, I am in no hurry to upgrade.

You can move the start button back over to the bottom left, right?
Edit- looks like you can. "If all you're after is a quick repositioning, you can do that for free in Windows 11. Just right-click anywhere on the desktop, select Personalize, navigate to the Taskbar section, then expand the Taskbar behavior settings. There are a few different configuration options, the first one being a Taskbar alignment pull-down menu, with Center(default) and Left as the two choices."
I barely touched it last night since I had to go to work, but I will update you guys with impressions of you like. So far so good!

I've always been an early adopter, 8 being the only exception (skipped it entirely). Doubt I'll have that option with 11, but I'm definitely waiting this one out a bit.

MS's PC Health Check gives me the green light light for everything yet says my Skylake CPU isn't supported. I know it's easy enough to ignore that, but I'm waiting on Alder Lake and AMD's response before an upgrade and that dovetails into my concern with the timing of this release.

The biggest warning sign to me was the push to get this out the door without a good explanation for the newer CPU requirement while the market is struggling with allocation of GPUs and prices are rising faster than inflation. Windows 11's biggest draw is... a slightly different UI? Built-in HDR support? I mean, seriously, what's the rush here?

From my point of view it seems the only intention was to add fuel to the silicon shortage propaganda with an OS release surely to interest millions right before the holiday season when hardware sales typically spike.

Anecdotal and all, but CPUs haven't been difficult at all to find around Canada's second largest city, the newest AMD and Intel CPUs have both been gathering dust on Best Buy shelves. It's not much different when shopping online, they can be found with little effort at least in North America. Yet the major media outlets have been playing up CPU shortages all year (CNN, ZDNet, PC Mag, etc). Why?

Talk of the GPU shortage irks me because it isn't a shortage at all, sales have been up year over year in both 2020 (modestly) and 2021, it's just that manufacturers and retailers simply don't care that bitcoin miners and scalpers are swallowing them up. Then there are all the unnecessary, counterproductive measures/restrictions related to the virus narrative.

Comparisons over the summer left me with the impression there was absolutely no reason whatsoever to upgrade, differences between Win 10 and 11 in the gaming space being negligible at best. Early reviews only reinforce that. I'd love to hear more about the positives from early adopters, though. I need some of this negativity shaken off.

Looks like IOS.

Whatevers I am fine with 10 until they force an upgrade on me.

I aint paying though thats for sure.
Microsoft have shot themselves in the foot by making Windows 11 incompatible with older PC's (at least officially). Otherwise they'd do the same thing as with Win10 for Win7 users - keep nagging you to upgrade and eventually put it in the recommended section in Windows Update.

The last couple of months in Australia CPU's have been having supply issues. I was trying to find a good deal and had to settle on a 10-400K because the prices were much more inflated then they should have been. They can't blame crypto miners for that.

Great Britain is a bit dodgy on that front too.

Same for current gen consoles. It's not just scalpers that are to blame, Sony missed their PS5 production target by 10 million units a few months back.

Even car manufacturing is having to be scaled back due to the chip supply shortage.

The CPU market would likely be one of the least effected, alongside iPhones and the like, because they always had the biggest and most profitable contracts, so are getting first dibs on what is getting produced.
