One of the biggest bits of scrutiny regarding the handling of the moment was Smith not being removed from the auditorium. The Academy has offered clarification saying Smith was asked to leave but refused. "We also recognize we could have handled the situation differently," the Academy statement read

There was always a certain tendency for the Oscars to point to more 'serious' movies back in the day than was necessarily reflective of public taste, and that's not necessarily bad in itself as it often led people to interesting films, but these days it's a whole different mess. We've got the Oscars fetishising gay trans blackness while what actually sells is basically kids movies.
