Thread: What is the best controller ever made?
Has anyone tried wireless Hori controllers? I hear Hori brand makes some excellent controllers, I might start looking into them for a fourth controller to play Mario Party Superstars with
Their controllers seem To be well liked by fighting game Players so I'd say give them a shot heard their n64 controllers were better than nintendos

Hori is usually a safe bet. I have two Hori wired PS4 controllers that've lasted longer than official Sony DualShock 4s. I have three Hori arcade sticks that are 4+ years old, still going strong after 1000s of hours of usage.

Good to hear, I made a huge mistake trying to set up my controller situation when SSBU came out. Bought Power A controllers (wired and wireless) for multiplayer when guests would over to play a round of matches. They're really fragile for their price point, they almost always break or stop functioning within the span of weeks, a few month, or a year. All depending on the controller. I would say they're about as worthless as the JoyCons, given their pathetic durability

I'm still vouching for the 8bitdo Pro 2 over here fwiw

Been using it with my Switch since I got it

Works great for Smash, Mario Party, Zelda, etc...
Not sure if I could use the 8Bitdo Pro 2 for SSBU and Mario Party Superstars...those two games will put some serious mileage on controllers. I wouldn't want to wreck such a nice controller. I play with the Pro Controller for Mario Party Superstars, but that's only because it's a damn tank durability wise and I trust the build to hold integrity over time. I don't doubt that the 8Bitdo Pro 2 is a premium controller, but durability is something I heavily contemplate now when selecting the right controller for certain games

@Franky Family

It feels almost exactly like my dualshock 4. I'm afraid to ask what you do to your controller during Mario Party 😅
In the new Mario Party Superstars game there are a fair amount of scenarios where you'll find yourself button mashing the 'A' button. Maybe in a typical 20 Turn game you can expect to be mashing the A button somewhere between 6-12 times throughout the game on average. Could be less or could be more depending on the game. But that's a lot of force going at one specific button for just one gaming session. It'll add up quickly considering how often I play the game. It's easily one of my favorites in the entire series

I like the Dual Shock's design the most. The problem with the latest versions including ps5 is the nonreplaceable batteries. That's a big no-no. Lithium batteries are a pain in the neck, if you leave them fully charged for too long they can expand and become useless, if you leave them uncharged for too long they can expand and become useless. You have to be cycling them constantly and they will slowly lose charging capacity and become useless in a few years. Truly horrible.

Replaceable batteries are a most, and even with these you have to be careful, regular batteries even leak proof ones can leak after a few years of being left unused. So far the rechargeable eneloop batteries seem like the best bet, I have a ton of them and even though its been many years I've yet to see them leak.

This thing looks nice... but I don't want to buy another overpriced shitty quality SCUF. Tempting, though.

I would like to get a Scuf controller, but the price point makes me fearful given all the build quality issues they supposedly have. I've a few friends who have got through a lot of Scuf controllers and that doesn't fill me with confidence.

Can confirm. Pretty great in the beginning, all had issues over time.

A $200 controller should work for 15 years.
Gamecube controllers and even Wavebirds used to cost $30 per controller and both will last you well over fifteen years if you take care of them and don't drop them. Hell, even if you drop them and smack them and play constantly they're still going to hold up for fifteen years. Can't even imagine buying a controller marked up over 700%

Edit: I literally used to punch my wired Gamecube controllers, as well as the Wavebirds, when I would get upset in Super Mario Sunshine. Used to slam the left handle into my quad as well out of frustration with some of the Shine Sprites and levels. You'd have to shatter the controller to break it; because they were nearly indestructible. Official Gamecube controllers are tanks and I stand by that

Pretty much only the companies that have had their own consoles can be trusted fully with controllers, most of the time...

Nintendo, Xbox, PlayStation, Sega is top tier
8Bitdo, Hori are probably the best third party options
Everything else is risky as fuck and probably not worth paying for

Still my favourite controller ever.

It's a less ergonomic version of dualshock 4 with gimmicky shoulder buttons.

But I really can't choose the best controller because a lot of them have aspects I like more than others.

Ds4 is best PS controller,

360 is best Xbox controller,

Switch pro is best modern Nintendo controller, but GameCube feels best in the hand.

Mixed feelings for me, I love how natural camera control feels because of the stick placement, but buttons are a bit awkward because of that. It's also less ergonomic than switch pro, but I like the feel overall.

The dead zones on the sticks need improvement though, they're kinda bad.

Any recommendations for controllers that will last for about 5-10 years high quality controllers meant for fighting games? Specifically for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mario Party. All the standard Gamecube controllers and Wavebird controllers (both of which would be the best options) cost a fortune now upwards of $150-300 last time checking the market value

arcade stick or a HORI fightpad. Dunno if the fightpad will last a full 10 but the arcade stick will. I guess the tricky part is "specifically for Super Smash Bros Ultimate" soooo you'd need a C-stick I'm guessing? An alternative would be to learn on a fightbox (all buttons, no sticks).

@DonDonDonPata do you have any of these specific controllers in the article? I have the the last one on the list, and it's the worst. PowerA in general is very low quality and breaks so easily, if it even works in the first place. But I've seen the other options around and being used before, wonder if they're any good or if we can expect them to break in a year or two just like the rest

has anyone tried to 8bitdo arcade stick?

Yeah, it's surprisingly nice.

Not on par with my HORI RAP N or Mad Catz TE2, but it's absolutely up to 8bitdo standards. There's a good amount of weight to it for the size as well, though I prefer larger sticks

I'm happy to own it

To me it's pretty obviously the DualSense and it's not even close, it makes the Xbox controller look extremely bare bones like as if MS isn't even trying.

I think it's a shame that more games don't make use of all it's features. To me it's crazy that they were able to put something like the adaptive trigger on a mass produced device and seem to have pulled it off.

If we are talking about the most influential than I would have to go with either the SNES controller or the first DualShock.
