What is considered "Kid-Appropriate Content" in your view?

Open ended question for parents and churchmarms alike.

I let my 4 year old son watch Godzilla King of the Monsters a few weeks ago, since he's really getting into Godzilla and asked to watch it. I'm like "sweet let's go" because even though I'm not personally much of a fan for Godzilla, I did grow up watching some of the movies and it's better than garbage like Paw Patrol and PJ Masks. So we watch the movie and it's violent and intense, but no big deal for the kid. Salty language is peppered throughout including one of the soldiers saying something like "you've got to be fucking kidding me" before getting blasted by King Gidorah. The language is also not a big deal for a kid but in my head I can imagine my mom/dad gasping and scolding the movie. The kids understand that they're responsible for the words that come out of their mouth, not the words they hear other people say. I know some parents who would've been shocked that I even let him watch a PG 13 movie in the first place which I find weird. I'm solidly conservative / religious if my moral compass adds any context to this story.

Ratings boards were a mistake and the world has been a worse place since.

Parents who really care about what their kid watches (and generally, barring exceptions, I don't think they should) should at least be willing to put the effort in to even look up a basic summary of it before deciding whether their kid can watch/play/listen to it. If you're gonna have that much control over the kid's life then you do your due diligence in actually researching and vetting instead of looking for a letter or number on the box and deciding everything from that.

But because of laziness, the ratings were created, and many pieces of media have been curtailed to fit in their target rating since.

If I had kids I'd be more worried about keeping them clear of social media instead of anything Hollywood would put out regardless of rating.

Parents just have to decide based on their kids' maturity level. My kids are still really young, but we watch plenty of more "mature" content, since I know they can handle it, understand that it's fiction, and not have it affect their view of the real world.

Ratings are just a basic guidelines. Usually it gives overall picture of how questionable the content is for children - does it have violence, sex, bad language, etc. At least, low rating can 100% assure you the content is safe. If it's not, you should watch the content (or read reviews) yourself before making the decision about allowing your child watch it. Blindly using ratings as a an absolute authority is dumb - 7 years old may be older than 10 year if raised or educated differently, based on their experience.

I'd go with the ratings are a guidelines thing at the end of the day. I don't think there's a lot of rhyme or reason to rating boards for the most part and I think it is best assessed by the parents, especially in these times.

It depends on age of course, but from my perspective, if a series / movie uses violence as an or even the primary means to solve a conflict, I do not consider the medium appropriate for children.

I prefer to let my kids know about the potential horrors of violence and that it very much still does exist in real life but must be used sparingly if a society is to be peaceful. They need to know why humans so often turn to violence and why it is so glorified if they are to understand why it must not be used liberally.

That's my view at least.

I do have much less of an issue with a piece of media that has violence in it, but discusses it critically. E.g. Star Trek Next Generation is less of an issue for me than Power Rangers (though of course the latter will not be very attracitve to kids nowadays anyway).

For me, I prefer for the critical discussion to happen between myself and my kids rather than leaving it to any particular media to feed them the "right" moral message, but I see your point.

And when he was only 1 year old I was playing dark souls 2 past midnight. My son was sleeping in the bed next to mine until I started fighting that Old Iron King boss.

Every kid is different. Parents need to be more involved with their children and know what they are watching instead of letting ratings babysit them.

in general for TV my kids only watch Latvian or Russian tv shows, i dont want them seeing every second kid as black, thats not how things are here and i wont brainwash them into thinking it should be. It its Moana or that pajeet kid detective show then they can watch it, but if its some shit with all multicultural kids then we wont let them watch it, all one culture is fine but mixed isnt.

Cartoons are different, its the usual paw patrol, 3 kota, bluey, peppa pig etc whatever is on nick jnr except blues clues, that we dont let them watch because of the pro gay shit they promote

All the kids have tablets and we switched to kids youtube for them because my girls started watching my little pony and some of the fan made shit which shows up as suggested or autoplay is straight up brony degenerate shit, talking about fucking, only fans killing etc


My wife took the girls to one of these shows, notice anything missing in the crowds here? Also the absolute butterface titty monster
