Thread: What are your thoughts on the N64?

also has a interesting version of starcraft on it too.

I had that and the Command and Conquer... both were turd sandwiches. Looked like shit (blur city) ran like shit and controlled like shit. BUT it was nice playing on the couch and on a big screen.

I bought the wireless N64 controller to play some N64 games online. Then I remembered how shitty the controller and most of the N64 library is. It had some great games like Goldeneye and OOT, but most of the library doesn't hold up today.

You're not wrong. It the two Zelda games and the Rare games and Mischief Makers

That's about it for me

I thought it would be a little more interesting or easy to understand if you could use a controller?

The whole gen including the PS1? That's a bold fucking statement, Stif
I know.
And I was thinking a minute before writing this, especially because of the PS1.

I can acknowledge that the modern gaming we have now started back then, but fuck, those graphics and most games' frame rates were hideous.

Imho 3D gaming became viable with the PS360 gen, and now we are at the level of 3D graphics we were with 2D graphics on the Neo Geo and some late SNES games.

Of course there were some very fun and good games in the PS1 and PS2 gen, but graphics always felt "not there yet" for me.

YMMV off course, mate... ;)

It was one of the last consoles to wow me. When I saw Mario 64 for the first time, I knew it was something special. Over its lifespan, it rarely disappointed. Same with the original PlayStation.

The last console to give me that feeling was the Dreamcast. Although the original XBox came close.

Nothing quite compares to the fun i had with 4 local multiplayer. Mario Party, Smash Bros, Goldeneye.
The only thing that came close to that fun was playing Xbox live for the first time and even then it still wasn't as fun as playing with friends in person.

You're a harsh critic! But I hear you, PS1 graphics specifically with the texture warping feels like prototype 3D, looking back. I'm glad that anything I play these days is through emulators that can mostly fix the worst bits.

For me it feels like they sorted everything out visually and from a gameplay standpoint by PS2 gen. MGS2 compared to MGS1 is probably the best example, that was such a huge jump. MGS1 is a 2D game at heart, there's not too much that couldn't have been done entirely top-down (Stinger missles and not much else). Another example I recently realised is what Tenchu 1/2 are like to go back and play. The draw distance makes Silent Hill and its fog look like a beautiful vista and it's janky as fuck to play. The PS2 games hold up though. DC/GC games also felt a lot cleaner than their predecessors.

Speaking of SNES, I loaded up Yoshi's Island earlier and put on my usual shader and it looks great, that stuff never ages if you can display it how it's meant to be seen. No suffering the way early 3D did, and I'm happy about that.

Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were the last days of true local multiplayer for me, and Goldeneye in particular I've seen be pulled out at parties a few times over the years because everyone always wants to play it.

After that, Wii Bowling or taking turns on music/dance games is about as close as it got.

It was the first major console I owned other than an Atari. My parents didn't really have the money to buy a Super Nintendo back in the day, but we were in a better spot by the time the N64 came out.

As such, I have a ton of nostalgia for it. Both Zeldas. Mario. Star Fox. Mario Kart. Both Banjos. Goldeneye. Smash Bros. Those games are etched into my memory. That doesn't mean it didn't have incredibly dry periods. But it's always going to be special because of when it came out.

The Nightdive remasters are fantastic so if you want to enjoy the games without the jank, they're the way to do so.

I have the first one on Steam

It's cool. Not something I'd sit down and play until completion though

There's better games in the genre

Thanks though dude

Similar story to mine.

The diversity of the line up was very cool tbh. You had industry leading shooters like Goldeneye, great racers like Wave Race or F-Zero, the best platformers with Mario, Banjo etc., great adventures like Zelda, great action games like Starfox or Blast Corps. The console didn't have a huge library, but the quality was there.

No good fighters though, and that was coming from the SNES which had very competent ports of SF2, Mortal Kombat 2 and Killer Instinct plus a few others.

I think a lot of my N64 problems stem from the fact I was such a huge SNES fanboy. Had most of my best action gaming moments on that console, playing all these fighting games, Zelda LttP, F-Zero, Yoshis Island, SMW, and the glorious looking Donkey Kong Country.

I somehow expected the "ULTRA64" how it was called when it wasn't released yet to be like a supercharged SNES, and every game to have at least the graphical standard of Killer Instinct in the arcades. Which was kind of mind bending back then in 1995.

And then the N64 arrived, and we got games that looked like a filtered turd, with the same crap textures over and over again on each fucking wall, in puke inducing 12 frames, if we were lucky. Because sometimes even less.

And the Killer Instinct wasn't even the first one, which we got promised, but some weirdo hybrid.

Yeah, there were some genre defining games on the N64 (like on the PS1 as well), but damn, did these games look shoddy when you were coming from the height of 2D gaming that was the SNES and Neo Geo.

Back then, I enjoyed the fighting games on it like Smash or even shit like Clayfighters. In general, I had very low standards as a kid and was just eating it up. The jump to 3D was a painful one in many cases. Looking back now, it's fugly and barely playable.

I do like the second game more, primarily because it has an actual quicksave system in the remaster.

Tried Mario 64, Goldeneye, and Quake 2, and everything works as if it were the original cartridge. :)

Amazing multi-player memories, although I liked PSX better for its Jrpgs , and cinematic experiences, between Smash, Golden Eye, and Mario Kart 64, I spent far more time playing N64

Seeing that pic gives me a nostalgia boner. I have the feeling of the console present in my mind now. Oh the memories.

What a great time it was. We didn't have much money and my father said that if I really want it, he would give me half of the money for it but I had to somehow come up with the other half. I saved money, helped neighbors out and really worked for it as a kid. Incredibly rewarding to finally buy it.

I will say IDK wtf Id software was thinking of putting the movement on the Dpad instead of the analog stick. That's going to take some time to get used to.

Maybe I'll pull out my own too now.

My memory pak is busted though. Don't think I can find a replacement now.

@TaySan do you know about the Mario 64 thing where some random person essentially rewrote the inefficient code in Mario 64 and fixed the performance issues? It runs on original hardware, he just cleaned the code up. He had to learn every single function of the game to do it, IIRC. Might be worth looking into for your Everdrive.

I wasn't quite like this kid, but my parents told me they couldn't get the N64 and didn't want me to be disappointed on Christmas morning. The N64 was damn near all I had talked about for months. They probably couldn't wait for me to open it just to shut me up.

But I was convinced they couldn't get it as it was extremely hard to find for its NA launch. My mom worked at a store and was well-liked all around so the electronics manager put one aside for her. I probably played 10 hours of Mario 64 that day lol

The PC port? Yes, I'm familiar with that.
Isn't it also on the C buttons?
Just tried it and you are correct. That makes the controls more bearable lol Wonder if Doom 64 does the same.

I'm pretty sure it does. Using the c buttons to move and the stick to aim takes some getting used to, but it's actually the best way to play fps on N64.
