Thread: Volition Studio (Saints Row) is shutting down after 30 years.
Learn from the Barby movie and don't try to appeal to demographics that don't match your game/movie/TV show.

Saints row was never a game meant for gender neutral black college age women or gay men, why throw away your old fan base for these groups?

Barby made over a billion by appealing to self important girls, women and gay men, the same people that buy barbies, they didn't try to make it into a male focused action movie, and made lots of money as a result.

In other words, stay in your lane.

This is something people in the West should learn from Japan's manga industry. There's a reason why there are clear cut demographic genres in manga.

Sucks. But it was clear that something went wrong with them when we moved into 8th gen.

Sad news for the developers, however unfortunately I think things largely went downhill after Saints Row 4 and unfortunately the Saints Row Reboot was an absolute misfire. I honestly don't know what they were thinking, and the doubling down on the stupid did them no favours. I guess even with the deep discount the game didn't get much traction on Steam, so Embracer pulled the plug. Pity because SR2, 3 & 4 were all great fun, but honestly anyone with half a brain could have told them that they were going to lose fans with the whole 'Millenium Power Fantasy' angle because to quote the bard Morrissey 'It says nothing to me about my life'. Know your audience.

That's ok.

Maybe in a few years Embracer group will let a group that understands the Saints Row IP take a stab at it.

I worry we're going to have a thread like this in late 2024 or 2025 about Rocksteady. They haven't released a new game since 2015 and the Suicide Squad game feels like a bomb candidate. I'm sure that they made some revenue off the remasters and Switch release, but it has to be expensive to keep a studio open that long without a new game generating some cash.

Depressing. Its been said above, the studio wasn't the old Volition at this point, glory days long gone, they deserve it for SR reboot, etc.

At the same time its just sad to see the name go, memories of Descent and Freespace are strong for me. Summoner I'm aware of but never played it to my knowledge, seems to hit home for others though.

:(

Sad to see a studio with 30 years of history go down the shitter, but they literally created a product for nobody.

Woke activists don't engage with the hobby beyond shitting themselves about it on X. Saints Row fans were never going to buy into this sham of an experience.

Whichever brainlet let this get further than being a pipe dream should've been laughed out of the room.

Such a shame.

I rest easy knowing that the OG Volition responsible for innovative and fun games died years ago.

A studios project is only chosen by the most senior higher ups and sometimes not even then. I do hope we are getting to the end of woke ideology, but let's not celebrate the loss of a massive studio because of a few shitty people at the top.

Is it that these studios let the new crazies run the show or do the crazies who are already there (I know game developers skew left) get emboldened by current politics?

I think in this case they hired a bunch of women and probably a dei director.

Anyway, absolutely deserved.

Making games is very hard, and risky because the costs are that high. And I don't think they went in the right direction with their last game(s).

And this is why you dont make games that pander to people that dont actually like games and instead use it as a reference about how great woke culture is
the people that will purchase your game dont want to have the shit that's all-over the media/culture in an activity that they use to get away from that sort of stuff

Gaming is about disconnecting and taking an adventure into another world....not worrying about if there is equal amounts of minorities in your game or if your voice actor is actually the same race as the character your playing
or if that main character is too attractive

Let the GOAT lay it on the line

Saints Row 2 was their best game. Always wanted to play the original Saints Row through the PS3 port but it was cancelled along with Saints Row Undercover. And what they've done with the series from Saints Row IV onwards was a tragedy.

Saints Row IV was excellent and improvement over 3. Things started to go wrong with Agents of Mayhem which was strangely dull and pointless game.

SR2 was great fun and had some surprisingly somber moments for a game where you can spray shit on people from a septic truck. 3 was a bit too silly but 4 said fuck it we're going full silly and it was greater for it.

I keep forgetting Agents of Mayhem was a thing. Saw that shit on clearance at Target for $2 once and still didn't buy it. Woof.

I finished Agents of Mayhem expecting it to get good at some point. It never did.

It's surprising they just didn't get sold off, in an age where any and everything seems to be sought after for exclusive content.
