Nothing good can come of it - the joke won't sustain over a long series tbh and the cast are either old or dead, new cast members won't have the same chemistry, etc.

Also, there is already the Orville which kind of fills that niche (unless that has ended?)

Yeah that was in the back of my mind too - maybe not the exact specific niche of the conventions and all that but it does sci fi comedy, and of course we have Red Dwarf if we wish to stray a little further. I will say I mostly enjoy The Orville though it can have its moments of being a bit current-hot-topic, and the cast of Red Dwarf are getting on a bit and I'm not sure it's as sharp as it used to be.

The bigger the budget of Red Dwarf the worst it got tbh IIRC. I haven't watched all that much of the Orville if I'm honest (too many things not enough time), but I kind of enjoyed it as it seemed to tap into proper Sci-fi on top of the humour.

Yeah I will say The Orville leans more into being a proper sci-fi later on and less on the comedy, though it's still present.

Well IIRC Brannon Braga is one of the writers on the series and was a writer on ST:NG and ST:Voyager so I'm not that surprised.

It got kinda woke, the woman empowerment was always there but it went off the charts last season, just some really abnoxious writers speaking to the audience moments, especially with Pam

Red Dwarf co-creator teases all-new prequel: "We're very excited"

Rob Grant announced the news at a BFI event on comedy and time travel.

Co-creator of the cult hit sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf, Rob Grant, has announced that he is currently working on a brand new prequel project, to be called Red Dwarf: Titan.

Grant made the announcement during the BFI's Comedy Time Travel Special, which took place as part of the institute's programme Destination Time Travel: Playing with Time in Film and TV.

Exactly what form the prequel will take, and whether it will be a novel or in some other format, is currently unconfirmed, but RadioTimes.com did catch up with Grant exclusively about the project.

He said: "I can't say too much, but it's a prequel and we're very excited about it. Hopefully we'll see it soon!"

This comes after a legal dispute over the rights to the show was resolved earlier this year, with the show's co-creators, Grant and Doug Naylor, both being able to continue working separately on Red Dwarf in different media.

A statement released earlier this year said: "Rob Grant and Doug Naylor are delighted to announce that the ongoing dispute over the Red Dwarf rights has been resolved.

"Moving onwards and upwards, Rob and Doug hope to launch separate iterations of Red Dwarf across various media, working again with the cast and other valued partners, and wish each other the very best.

"Smoke a kipper, Red Dwarf will be back for breakfast!!"

Shortly after this, Naylor said he thought the show was likely to return to screens at some point, adding that there's "real interest".

Naylor said: "Providing the boys are available, which isn't the easiest thing because they've all got these mad schedules, especially Craig [Charles] and Robert [Llewellyn].

"But provided we can get everyone available and they do all want to be available, they want to make more, I think we've got a good chance."

This makes me crazy happy. The world needs more Red Dwarf.

Watched this yesterday. Genuinely bloody good. Obviously the BBC try to BBC with massively over represented black people, a lesbian contestant and making a big fuss about one gladiator being 'deaf' (she's not, she just needs a hearing aid), but you can't really make a contest of physical prowess with massively fit and hyper competitive people woke, so it was basically just a solid return of a 90's classic. Will be watching live this Saturday.

The Australian version of Gladiators returned last night as well. It didn't rate as well as the UK version (589k national), although it was up against the Australian Open tennis and BBL cricket, so it did alright.
