Thread: Things I'm sick and tired of seeing in modern games (other than the woke BS)
- Just stuff being in a game for stuff to be there. Like God of War, so many abilities and items that are basically the same, just a different animation. But mechanically, totally pointless, yet there's so many of them, unlocking all the time. Totally retarded and bad game design. Just braindead CONTENT.

- Static environments. Still so many games that are basically art galleries, you can't touch anything. It's supposed to be an interactive medium, but we still have barely any physics in most games. I'm so tired.

- Same for enemies. Weak and samey death animations, no ragdoll, no real dynamic behavior. I want to throw enemies around in a realistic way, want them and the environment to react to my actions.

- Stutter and hitches, bad CPU utilization. So many games are just BAD regarding CPU utilization, it's sad.

1) Long unskippable intros. I don't care about your story the first time and I sure as shit don't care about it on repeat playthroughs. Let me skip that nonsense and start playing. I don't need to be told HOW to play a damn videogame. I know how the sticks and the buttons work. Give me a 'skip the bullshit' toggle in the settings that can be set from the beginning.

2) Hold a button to do something. Always hated that shit, still do. Where did it start, God of War maybe. When it invaded my Lego games I was really annoyed.

3) Open worlds. Give me a linear, well crafted experience. Developers have had plenty of time to perfect open worlds and they still fill them with pointless fetch and escort quests. Time is up, go back to good game design.

4) Mechanic-itis. Tales games for example, ever notice how there are a hundred gauges to build up to do some extra group move that requires a button combination that you can't be bothered to remember? Yeah, me too and mechanic-itis obviously isn't limited to Tales games. Every game has become so damn complicated. I remember when the Wii came out and Miyamoto said games were becoming too complicated and the Wii's simple controller was a remedy. Well, he was right.

Probably more but I'll be honest, I don't play many modern games due to the games being bloated, annoying messes. I am still enjoying the 8, 16, 32 and 64 bit games of the past. Which brings me to another point.

5) Modern games made to look retro do a poor job at looking retro. Retro games looked a little pixelated because they had to, not because they wanted to. Modern retro looking games purposely try to make your eyes bleed. Your doing it wrong! Twit!

  • Horrible optimization. Having a smooth framerate is essential to making game play in (almost) every genre feel right. Shader optimization on PC is especially bad right now.
  • Walk and talk sequences. Slowing the pace to a crawl for (usually) boring exposition is the most surefire way to pull me out of a story. Glad this is less common than it used to be, however.
  • Empty open worlds or needlessly huge shooter maps. I'm glad your art team kept busy but if the environment doesn't enhance the game play it's a waste of resources.
  • The weird desire to make antagonists relatable. Sauron, The Terminator and Agent Smith don't need understandable motivations to be great villains. Don't be afraid to make characters that are irredeemable, they're often way more satisfying to defeat.

Boss gauntlets before the final boss. I bought The Takeover on Steam and was really enjoying it until the last level. A standard level but you also have to beat the 6 bosses you've already beaten in order to face the final boss. I would have recommended it as a great scrolling beat 'em up if not for that shit. Uninstalled it quick-smart.

Biggest issues for me with modern games are really more things outside the game than in. DLC, battle passes, always online requirements, live service, all shit that gets in the way of me even playing the game without nickel and diming me.

I miss the days of just sitting down, booting up a game, and playing it without any other bullshit. I don't want to turn a game into a second job. Some games still do that, which is nice, but I mostly spend my days playing old games for that reason. I'm frankly more excited when an old game I like is on GOG than a new released game.

What chapter of FFXIII was it that where the game stopped being a corridor? Wasn't it something like chapter 10 of 13? That game was particularly bad. By the point it opened up I was sick of it, and I very rarely drop games on purpose.

That's where I stopped too lol. Final Fantasy XIII is interesting because it gets a lot of shit for how much it is 'streamlined', but it is the structure of so many games that hide it better. They just showed you the corridors.

There's a great post by a developer named Boghog making the case that there should be a movement for "ADHD accessibility" features to do this and inadvertently make most games so much better… He took a lot of shit making the joke but his points were all spot on. I'll have to hunt it down.

Original post deleted, and it's a shame. It was such a smart 'judo throw' of the Dark Souls Easy Mode argument: "but it won't ruin your experience", but he invoked the precious mental health diagnosis and caught the viral heat of a million autistic suns…
but like a black hole you can see it by it's gravitational effect:

I'm fed up of seeing an "open world" advertised as a selling point. All the usual stuff that comes along with that, like what percentage bigger it is than the previous game. How many Skyrims can fit into their open world etc. Oh, how long it would take you to walk from one side to the other.

Yellow paint can do one, too.

I suppose it stood out more it's because most of us that bought 13 came from previous FF games where you had freedom. The freedom I remember in 13 was maybe skipping the odd battle here and there.
BTW, at this point we only need to be told if a game does NOT have auto save.
Reminds me of PS3 when you would click on a game and walk off while it loaded so you didn't have to sit through the 12 logo screens. Surprise! Half way through they stuck in a OS level message about auto saves that paused everything. You still had to sit through some more nonsense after you clicked okay for the 30th time and wondering why there was no "Yes forever, don't tell me again" option. I'm glad that fell out of favour.

  • Unreal Engine.
  • Frame rate targets below 60.
  • Raytracing strictly as a visual improvement, adds nothing to the gameplay experience.
  • Unskippable cutscenes and tutorials.
  • Skill trees and gear swapping that forces you into menu screens.
  • Dialogue trees, actions speak louder than words.
  • Archaic, pitifully predictable NPC behavior.
  • Oversized hit boxes/detection.
  • Story/Easy mode - watched a 10 year old girl beat Halo on Heroic difficulty, you have no excuse.

Don't need an excuse to want to finish a game I paid for. Also, I was better at games when I was 10 than I am at 50.

Btw one PC specific thing is driving me nuts.

Devs only including Xbox controller button layout on PC (I'm using a Dualsense). While at the same time, there being PS5 versions with that button layout, obviously. Like, fuck you cunts.

You didn't realize it, but your Pc is an Xbox

- Splash screens: Show them ONCE and then NEVER again. I do not need to see the Publisher, the Developer, some third party licensed software before getting to the fucking title screen. If you need that to cover a slow Title screen load....suck less.

- Publisher accounts: NO i do not want to make and account for Take Two, Ubisoft, EA etc when playing games on Xbox/PS/Steam. I am already required acocunts on the platforms. Why oh why would I want another one? And holy shit do the sign in flows suck on consoles.

- Online only (single player) features: The only thing that should ever require me to connect to a game server is online multiplayer, MTX shops or leaderboards.

- Collector's Editions: These are not for 'collectors' these are for hoarders and nerds. Just a lot of junk. Give me a steelcase and a PROPER game Manual and we are good. Keep those plastic toys where they belong...the trash

- Anti-toxic features: One man's respect is another man's toxicity. Trying to censor communications is like trying to censor morality...SUPER subjective and ALWAYS overbearing. Add in the only way they can censor is A. Reporting - which is fraught with false reports or B. Parsing the text/audio - Which means they record (even if temporarily) your comms to run it through analysis. Dont want people to be able to say 'wrong think'.... dont give them VOIP.

- Game updates: When I boot my game up, I should be able to play the version I have installed and was playing the day before. I fully understand why they are 'needed' (just like OS update requirements)....but its more of a choice than an actual need. With the worst offender being PS5 with those fucking controller software updates. Like WTF!?! I have decided not to play games due to annoying updates.

Unskipable end game credits. Like, seriously? I have to watch 15 mins of scrolling names? And the only way out is to kill the game?

Quoted for emphasis. I love this post.

I want to mention that my son cannot put his name into games these days. His name is Killian and they don't like the word Kill so he has to alter his name because of stupidity.

Let's think about this. In most game worlds players are going to kill something. Even those Goombas can't come back from pancake status so what's the problem with the damn word?

I'm really at my limit with female protagonists that look/act like men but have an ugly female face attached.

Intergalactic: Heretic Prophet can take their asian dyke character and go fuck themselves

It's funny that female empowerment = becoming more like a man.

Lots of good stuff here. I want to note that as a physical collector I intentionally avoid buying collector's editions. I think they are lame and a shelf full of standard releases looks more practical, uniform, and elegant in my opinion. Collector's editions are far too easy to damage, hard to make space for, and overpriced. Also, they are so standard now that there is nothing special about them. All they really do is make you look more like a nerd when your collection consists entirely of them. I'd rather look on ebay for anything in the collection that's actually worth a damn like maybe a cool slip case cover (Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters collector's edition came with one and I bought it separately off of ebay)

Agreed. You see these YouTubers with a cluttered mess from CE's behind them on a shelf.

A lot of games fuck it up near the end of the game as they try too hard to bump up the difficulty. Streets of Rage 2 is a masterpiece for five levels, then gradually falls apart with the cheap boxer boss in stage 5 and the thoroughly obnoxious elevator section in stage 7.

RPGs having real world animals everywhere along with the monsters.

Playing FF7 rebirth and I see deer and parrots and shit in the jungle, along with the deadly monsters

Beat 'em up boss fights always following the same formula. The boss usually has a bigger sprite than you, can move at ten times the speed of your character (or can just do insane jumps around the stage), can make themselves invincible whenever they want, typically can't be attacked when getting up from the ground.

Always the same tired shit. The thing I hate the most is how they always have to fight you with minions, even when it goes against their character to do so. Beat 'em up game designers are so set in their ways that it doesn't even occur to them that some villains would have too much pride to not fight you alone.

I'm also sick of 2d platformers where enemies magically pop up onscreen to hit you just as try to jump to another ledge.

I'm also sick of retro games with respawning enemies.

I'm sick of Contra/Metal Slug games (and the games that copy them) always following the one hit and you die rule, which is entirely a US thing. Some of these games were not originally designed this way, but were changed when localized for American audiences (like Contra Hard Corps).

As someone who plays a lot of retro games, I'm getting burnt out on a lot of the same cheap bullshit popping up over and over again.

I hate this too, especially in JRPGs. You travel through an entire dungeon, fighting the same old enemies, finally make it to the boss only to have to put up with same annoying enemies again. I want to fight the boss, damn it!

Another one that's recently come into my mind due to some recent games I've played...

I'm so sick and goddamn tired of video games where you have computer controlled allies who either never actually do anything or play the game like a mentally impaired child. Note to any game designer reading this, if you are making a game where all of the player's computer controlled allies have piss poor AI and all of the enemies have super smart AI,

FUCK YOU

Oh, and I love how computer controlled allies always have little bitty baby health too. I'm sick of playing games where I don't have REAL help.
