Thread: The X-Files reboot coming from Ryan Coogler?

Ryan Coogler sent the Rocky franchise off in a completely new direction with his film Creed, then made one of the most highly respected entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Black Panther. Now, while he continues producing Creed sequels and working on further expansions of the Black Panther franchise (he directed the sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), it sounds like Coogler is about to put his stamp on another famous property. In a new interview, The X-Files creator Chris Carter has indicated that the sci-fi series is about to get a Ryan Coogler reboot!

While being interviewed on the show On the Coast, Carter was asked how The X-Files would be different if it were made in our current times. Carter replied, "We're so steeped in conspiracies now. The X-Files dealt with a central conspiracy, but now the world is so full of conspiracies that I think it would be a different show. Actually, I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast. So he's got his work cut out for him, because we covered so much territory."

There hasn't been any mention of a Ryan Coogler take on The X-Files before this interview, so Carter just gave On the Coast a major scoop.

I am a big X-Files fan and I don't want this. They revived the original series for two seasons and it was a disappointment. This will be worse.

If this were an original show with its own unique mythology, like Fringe, then there would be potential for something interesting. Just trying to reboot an existing series with an all-new cast sounds like some Men in Black: International crap. Leave it alone, you vultures.

"Diverse cast"

X-Files my favorite show of all time, along with Lost.

Revise the series with a diverse cast? Oh fuck off Chris Carter. You literally can't even write for the show you created now. The last two seasons had some good episodes but the mythology wasn't just poor it was completely at odds with everything set up before.

Alien Rebellion? "No that was silly".
No Alien conspiracy? No it was just the military with alien tech all along. Ignore the hundreds of previous scenes/episodes.
William? Oh hes the smoking mans.
William "Dead"? "Oh well, we can start again he was never ours"
Monica Reyas working for the enemy FOR NO REASON AT ALL.
Dogget not mentioned once.
Super Soldiers and colonization gone because of global warming? Lol
Smoking man wanting to end the world by releasing a virus... just because.
Skully pregnant again despite having no overies.
Missile rockets took out the Smoking man, yet somehow he survived, but a few shots in the Lake will be A-OK.

This from the man who CREATED the series, whats the solution? A diverse cast. FUCK OFF.

I'm the biggest X File fan going (fuck you @Wei Shen 😗) but im not sure I could course correct and ret-con to make everything make even a stretched out kind of sense.

I enjoy X Files. Its like Buffy but not nearly as good

Falls off hard around season 5

Before even the movie? No way. Season 6 and 7 had great episodes and season 8 with Doggett and the search for Mulder was just the change in direction we needed. The season 8 finale would of made the perfect show finale IMO.

For me Season 9 on wards was weaker mythology wise. They basically massacred this like they did the Star Wars franchise.

That said Id totally try it day 1. I just really want the show to make sense again. Mainly them trying to pretend the season 1-9 story never happened.

If Chris Carter did Last of Us: Part 3;

Ellie "What Joel died!?, no that's just silly, there he is!" and the story progressing as normal.

I had the same thoughts running through my head while watching the finale. Just felt like a waste of a revival in the end. It needed to be a movie with a big budget, like Fight the Future, but throw Mulder and Scully right into the alien colonization after a quick recap of Season 9 finale.

I recommend reading the Season 10 and Season 11 comic by Joe Harris. It's a much better continuation to the original series and features an adult Gibson Praise. The ending is still kind of disappointing but story is better than what we got with the television revival.

The comic was supposed to be canon until the television revival was greenlit and Carter focused on that instead.

I am just rewatching the entire series. Just started season 8, never got beyond it. From what I just read, that sounds like an absolute clusterfuck.

The standalone episodes of the X-Files are some of the best television out there.

The story arc episodes fall off rapidly around when the movie hit, with those in S9, S10, and S11 becoming increasingly bizarre amd eventually surreal. Come to think of it, so were the standalones, but they were at least entertaining. The mythos episodes eventually had that feeling like a Z-grade movie where you almost get a headache from it. Even the camera work was disorientating.

About the only way to save the show is for a S12 to start off with Agent Einstein (God Carter is a subtle writer) and Scully and a miraculously resurrected Reyes having a threesome. Full on milf muff diving. Mulder is watching as they beckon him to join when suddenly a light flashes and Mulder bolts up in a hospital bed with a tented sheet after being in a 10-year coma following an autoerotic asphyxiation accident. This would have made more sense than any of that other nonsense AND have been plausibly canon.

Oh, and S10 and S11 predicted the past few years:

The first 5 seasons with the monster of the week episodes are still great even today. No shit i actually rewatched the inbred family episode a month or so ago

The fact that diverse cast would be one of the main selling points is just laughable.
He's not going to reboot it with an all new conspiracy arc or set it in a different era or a different part of the world.
Nah, it's going to be diverse is the main selling point. Haha.

The only way to really make the xfiles work in a modern context would be to make it play out something like True Detective season one. A single case told over 10 or so episodes with a look at how Mulder and Scully are as people all these years later.

That'll just be the pathway to the over-arching hush-hush conspiracy that spans the entire show:
Everything was racism.

I'm already looking forward to the headlines declaring season 2 is not happening.
