The Witcher series returns with a new protagonist. CD Projekt Red's new RPG saga replaces Geralt with Ciri as the playable character to lead us into a new fantasy saga. From the developers of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077, CDPR give us our first glimpse into the world of The Witcher 4 as Ciri takes on a fearsome monster called the Bauk in this trailer pre-rendered in a custom build of Unreal Engine 5.

Absolutely wasn't looking forward to a female protag in this day and age and I just don't think the Witcher is the Witcher without Geralt. However, it looks like they at least did Ciri good. She looks great and that trailer did a really good job of making her look like a badass while vulnerable at the same time and not some sort of snarky super woman.

They at least have my attention for now.

Dunno about that Ciri design. Seems gritty and fitting, at the same time she gives me butter face vibes. Looks like her lips got some Botox and she did some plastic surgery 15 years ago and now aged, looking like a used up ex celebrity that's now on drugs.

Again, Ciri as a Witcher is a stupid idea. She has powers way beyond any witcher or mage in the Continent. Plus of course, the elephant in the room being she's never gone through the Trial of the Grasses, so how the fuck is she able to chug potions that should be poisonous to her?

Those powers seemed largely absent here.

Very confident in the quality of the game, a bit worried about the "cultural changes" that happened inside of CDPR over the recent years. But chances are ok that they won't go over board with the shit.

On a different note, feels like inevitably, many male leads will be replaced by females.

Uncharted went female in the last iteration
Dishonored got femaled
Darksiders I think got females with the third game
Last Ratchet game you play half of it as a female
Alan Wake 2 got femaled
Last Wolfenstein game got femaled
Half Life went with Alyx
Gears went female but is coming back to male
Witcher get femaled
...
.....

Anyone who answers to this post has to list at least three games that replaced a female protagonist with a male one first.

I dont know how to feel about this.

I love the Witcher series, Witcher 3 is my all time favorite ORPG.

To me, Geralt is The Witcher. Let alone that removes alot of hype for me.

I am not really super bothered playing as Ciri, but I am bothered over why she doesn't look anything like Ciri. I guess the reason why people call the new Ciri ugly is because she doesn't look like Ciri at all.

Look at that jawline. No matter how older you get, you don't change your jawline like that.

Also, in Witcher 3 she took a sip of a Witcher potion and almost went into coma. In the Witcher 4 she is chugging one potion after another.

I also guess picking a female Witcher over a male Witcher this time and age feels like forced woke, thanks to the rest of the industry.

After three games and hundreds of hours of Geralt, with the Witcher 3 DLCs etc. I think it's difficult to make another interesting game featuring him. I fully expected them to go with Ciri, it just makes sense at this point, it's the obvious choice and not just woke related IMO. The natural flow of things, she's his "daughter" and next in line.

And this is a trailer, not using in game models. In previous trailers of their other games, faces looked pretty different in the final game.

Let's see. I'm obviously very sensitive and fed up with the uglification. But it's too early to tell.

(This is me trying to ignore that CDPR became diversity champions and won DEI awards for menstrual leave, trying to be positive)

I dont know man. I dont think theres any explanation that can justify Ciri looking like this.

I've played the 3rd one alot, completed it twice, and I didn't really notice that was Ciri before my GF pointed out it's her because of the scar. The scar doesn't even look identical.

I dont know what to think about it. I mean its common that women needs to be ugly this time around, but how DEI is the game when theres literally not one single black person in the game.

Imagine Netflix viewers: "Why is Triss a redhead? Why are they blackwashing?"

I did the ending in TW3 where Geralt and Ciri carry on as Witchers so I'm A-OK with this tbh. IIRC they said beforehand TW3 would be the last game with Geralt as lead, so I'm not going to get upset by it. I imagine Geralt will still be around in some capacity.

Ok here's my honest take on the trailer.

- feels like in this day and age, there are only two types of female leads: snarky and obnoxious or angry and bitter.
- Ciri falls into the angry and bitter category
- her using potions suggests she's a Witcher now. Going through that process makes the Witchers way less emotional, which is an important part of the lore
- Ciri comes across super emotional, screams, shouts etc. which is not how Witchers are
- her jaw could be less prominent
- religion bad yes people are the real monsters nothing new here but it's too on the nose for me
- I like the dark and gritty visual style
- her face animations look like she got Botox, not much happening there, fits her Botox look
- One of the big reasons Witcher 3 was so great was the writing of Geralt and how he reacted to the stuff happening around him. Please don't make this one a depressing bitter female slog.

It's just a trailer, though. Waiting to see more, I actually like Ciri and think there's a lot of potential. But in this trailer, she just comes across as too emotional for me.

I much prefer the ending where Ciri becomes the Empress of Nilfgaard. For me, it felt the most fitting ending for her journey. Not to mention a bittersweet parting between her and Geralt.

This is an in game shot of her from TW3. Looks more like the new Ciri than the pre rendered shot you posted IMO.

I like that she looks weathered and like she went through some serious shit. Just get rid of the Botox look, make her a bit less emotional and we're cool.

I think she looks fine and was instantly recognizable. The last game will be over 10 years old (?) by the time this comes out. Tech isn't the same so she won't look 100% identical to TW3.

Nice to see that the best ending of Witcher 3 is made non-canon because they forced a new protagonist. Here's hoping they don't mangle the remake of Witcher 1.

I have very little connection to The Witcher. I know Ciri is a very important and pivotal character to the franchise, and Geralt's story. I know pretty much everything revolves around her. So it makes sense to follow her... but somehow it feels weird. From the outside looking in, not having Geralt seems strange, and seeing the same character that even I know doesn't really entice me. But it's not a franchise i'm close to.

This is one of those situations of, "Yeah we got to go with a female lead for woke reasons but we can hide it behind the fact that she's a major and known character so fans can't really complain without looking like anti-woke losers."

We all know this wasn't a creative choice that just happened naturally. The series already bores me so much that it won't affect me very much, but I hope for longtime fans that the game at least goes in a respectful direction with their internal checklist desperations.

The trailer was pre-rendered on an unannounced Nvidia GPU. Like.... Thanks for the info. That means nothing.

Nvidia sneaking in some hype.

Always knew it was going to be Ciri........ taking the same approach I did with Star Wars Outlaws thanks but no thanks. Ciri has special magic powers which make her no ordinary Witcher and really ruins the premise of the character facing adversities.

She was the 'chosen one' in Witcher 3 and now she's just a regular potion drinking monster killer by trade? What was the whole point of her importance in Witcher 3 to just be this......

Could've given me any alternative male character Witcher and I'd be day one but part of the story was the relationships developed by an otherwise emotionless character. Women can't be that by default.

It'll be interesting to see how they'll twist the lore to make this work. The Trial of Grass can only be performed at a young age and only boys ever survived that, girls died because of the mutations. It kills every adult who tries it. Not even mentioning that all the knowledge about the ritual died with Vessemir.

But hey, I guess it'll be:
- girl boss strong and special
- it worked on her
- because gurlz are the best

  • This tbh

Siri isn't a girl boss though. She definitely a flawed character and despite being strong she knows jack shit and still gets her ass handed to her by gerelt.

Great to see her getting her own story line more fleshed out. That character design just needs a bit of improvement
