I'm really worried about one of my dogs. She looked like she was getting fatter pretty quickly so I took her to the vet last week to get a diet plan. She's always been a bit chunky, so I assumed the extra weight was due to winter and less exercise and her being 12. The vet said her abdoman was filled with fluid. After Xrays she suspected lymphoma and said she would have around 6 months maybe with meds if so. Then the bloodwork came back the next day and showed higher liver counts and slightly higher pancrease counts. Lymph counts fine. The cytology report came back a day later and showed nothing cancer related. I am taking her for an ultrasound later today. The vet suspects either she ate something bad that hit her liver hard, or she has a growth in her liver that is fucking things up. I don't want to do a hard invasive surgery on her. But I'm also not sure how and when I can possibly make a choice between life and death on my friend.

Well at least its not cancer. There could be a possibility that she doesn't need surgery at all right? Try not to jump to conclusions until you know more. If she does need surgery, make sure you go around to other vets to get their pricing.

My cat's hip didn't develop properly so he has weak bones and ended up breaking his femur at the hip; before I knew all of this he was just limping really badly. I took him to a couple local vets; one vet wanted $1200 just to do x-rays to find out what was wrong! I found another vet who did the x-rays and the surgery to fix it for $1500 all in.

The month after surgery was hard. I had to buy him a canvas play pen and basically keep him in there for an entire month. He moaned the whole time and would scream when he would move his hip to cause him pain. He couldnt go to the bathroom normally so there was clean up every few hours. It fucking sucked. However he's all better now (pending that he doesn't break the other femur in the same way) and I dont regret spending a single penny of what it cost to get him well again (I am fortunate enough to be in a position where I didn't even think twice about whether I would pay for the surgery or not though)

The ultrasound revealed her entire liver is cancer and the fluid buildup was due to that. She has a lot of tumors but none have ruptured yet. The doctor just suggested I contact my vet for options. Called the vet and they are going to put her on steroids. Then when she seems worse I have to bring her in to be put down. Probably a few weeks or months left.

Sorry to hear that, JORMBO.

Hopefully you get at least another few months or more with her.

I did one of those paw print mold things with her this morning. Tomorrow I'm going to have a bunch of photos of her printed out and framed. And I'll pick up some hamburgers she can eat every day. We will hit up a few of her favorite parks with her buddies too. I have a appointment with my vet tomorrow to go over how long she might live. I also have to ask what the chances are of a tumor rupturing and her going out more painfully. If that is a high possibility I will probably do all of her favorite things with her this week and then put her down sooner. Which will be hard since she is behaving and has the same energy she always does right now. I'd just rather it not be a case where everything is normal and then something painfully ruptures soon and that's it.

She is the one in the middle.

You are a great person and I hope you get to enjoy the moments with her the best way you can.

I had to put my dog to sleep this morning. She took a turn for the worse this week and wasn't able to keep down any food. Water was coming out as explosive diarherea every few hours. She also was much weaker and was having trouble getting around. I am very sad to lose her but also glad I was able to give her some extra time and give her a mostly peaceful send off before she entered a phase where she would be in pain.

I've been watching my sister's dog for the past month and a half because my neice was badly hospitalized. She is getting discharged today and they should be picking their dog up today or tomorrow. The house is going to feel really weird going from 4 dogs to 2 dogs within a day. It already feels weird not seeing Roxy in the spot where she always lays down.

No matter how many doubts you might have, if you're a loving person then you gave your companion a better life than they would've had otherwise. The amount of dogs that either don't find owners or go to unloving or unprepared/incapable families is sad. Job well done mate.

Man I feel for you. This shit really hits hard. Take time to look after yourself, and the remaining dogs, and just try to focus on the good times. Honestly heartbreaking stuff - animals > people any time.
