While this is my opinion I am going to try and signal boost movies that OTHER people like and I don't because I want this to serve as a good recommendation list for anyone as best as I can. But I'll be sure to note the difference between films I'm a fan of and ones I'm not because for some people it might matter what someone so immersed in the genre prefers, then again you can be so immersed your taste becomes detached from what mass audiences would like. Well... whatever...
I'm starting with Amazon Prime because they have my favorite selection.
Movies I Legit LOVE
City of the Living Dead
This is my favorite horror currently streaming on Amazon Prime. It's Italian horror, it's especially gory, great atmosphere, surreal, it has zombies and other supernatural occurences. Good for people who can handle poor dubbing and movies that don't make a ton of sense.
Lifeforce
This is about space vampires, it has some really cool imagery and creepy shit in the first half and the second half goes full blown insane. The practical effects and general look of this film are so top notch, it has a fun score that admittedly feels a bit more like an adventure film score than a horror film score and it does play out a bit like a dark adventure.
An American Werewolf in London
This is from John Landis, dude who gave you Trading Places, Coming to America, Animal House and the Blues Brothers (and Max Landis unfortunately). This is a horror film from him that is the absolute best werewolf film ever made. The comedy is there but it's pretty pitch black. Absolutely love this movie and to be honest you're going to think it's better than the two movies I put above it and I won't fault you for it.
Hellraiser
Hellbound: Hellraiser II
The first two Hellraiser movies are awesome sadistic horror. If you like stuff about Hell and you like hard to watch violence involving chains and hooks digging into people check it out. The sequel goes fully nuts in the second half with a great visual representation of Hell that's unique.
Deep Red
Italian Giallo horror from Dario Argento, it's a murder mystery and a lot of damn fun, great score.
Gamera 1, 2 and 3 (the '90s ones)
The Heisei Gamera trilogy isn't traditionally what I'd call horror but the site I'm using for this list does so whatever, these are the absolute best Kaiju films in the business alongside the original Godzilla and Shin Godzilla.
Phantasm
Really cool surreal/sci-fi horror with inspirations from Dune among other things.
Phenomena
Another Argento flick, this one is a bit less giallo as it has more supernatural elements, the score is still fun but they also sometimes just blast metal music over kill scenes haha, see Jennifer Connelly for I think her first role? as the star of the film.
Slugs
Really fun natural horror flick that feels like a gruesome throwback to older creature features.
The Church
This one had Argento on as producer or something but the director went on to do the amazing Cemetery Man. This film is about a Church built on the bodies of a massacred village and it goes PROPER NUTS with the supernatural shit.
The Stuff
This is a comedy that's too gross to not be put in horror about the newest food craze that you probably don't want to be eating. The practical effects are awesome and sometimes awesomely hilarious.
The Crazies
The original Romero version is a great film and a big step up for me from his more revered Night of the Living Dead.
Humanoids From the Deep
Roger Corman schlock about gross creatures that rape our women and murder our men. It's a bit of a Jaws rip-off but instead of a mayor worried about tourism it's all about some cannery being put in town. The finale is great.
Bad Taste
Peter Jackson's (The Lord of the Rings) first film is about a crew of nerdy scientists taking on an alien invasion and it is one of the grossest and funniest horror movies you'll ever see.
Contamination
This is one of those Italian horror flicks that may throw you guys, I love it, it's a goofy James Bond-esque story about a drug cartel type who is smuggling weird alien eggs that make people's chests explode (yes, it's an Alien rip-off). Lots of fun practical effects in a very silly movie I don't expect all of you to enjoy lol.
The Descent
This is a really well done film from Neil Marshall who'd go on to slum it directing the best Game of Thrones episodes because his career went down the tubes after the totally underappreciated Doomsday. This one is handled dead serious, it's an all-female cast without feeling one bit woke and has as much drama to it as horror, just incredibly well done.
Hatchet
Hatchet III
Hatchet II
These are like if the Friday the 13th movies were as bad as your parents pretended they were, absolutely hilarious as well.
The Being
I've been waiting for the blu release this week to re-watch this but I remember a fun ass silly '80s horror about an alien.
Midsommar
Artsy horror about a religious cult and a bad break-up. I related to the main character's anxiety problems and the cult has some fun stuff going on, I get why people don't like it, though.
The Ring
I prefer the remake to the Japanese original, come at me, bro.
The Collector
Sort of like a Saw film with a house full of traps, really well filmed and fun.
Chopping Mall
Really silly and awesome '80s movie with gay robots patrolling a mall and killing anyone still inside.
Child's Play
Classic slasher that doesn't quite live up to the status it's given but is still a fun time.
Children of the Corn
Fun film that will make you reconsider having children.
Society
Body horror of the weirdest type. Also stuff about social classes in society if that matters to you.
