Thread: Super Mario Party Jamboree | Pre-Release Discussion | Analysis
I've looked at all the footage available at this point and they definitely got a budget increase with this game. So many tiny things added like the jingle for all the characters when it's their turn, 2 different shop themes, dynamic music, voice overs for when a minigame is initiated or getting a star or a new turn starts and dubbing it in various languages. It's a bit surprising since Mario Party hasn't really ever had this much put into it. Then again, Super and Superstars combined have sold 32 million units so maybe I shouldn't be surprised. This gets me wondering what the next Mario Kart is gonna be like.

Nintendo will probably have an enormous roster of racers, karts and bikes, racetracks. I believe the racetracks will be more forgiving and there wont be so many turns where players are thinking, "Ok where the fuck do I turn" and then they crash into a wall because the sign or arrows saying to turn either blend in with the damned track colors or was poorly placed. No filler tracks that suck like Tour pretty sure they'll say hit the highway to that garbage. I think MK, MP, and SSB on the Switch showed us that celebrating a large roster of characters brings a lot of energy and options to a game so my main takeaway from the Nintendo Switch is that we can expect a great number of fun characters to join in. I really think that they're just going to double down on the same formula with better racetracks, add more characters, tighten the racing mechanics and customization, and they might introduce more Nintendo characters from other IPs. I'd like to race as Captain Falcon, Slippy Toad, Kirby, Captain Olimar, King Dedede, Ness, etc.

Article:
Debuting in 1998, the Mario Party series has delivered 10 mainline entries and almost just as many spinoffs in the last 26 years. While the critical reception to each Mario Party entry over the last two decades has remained fairly level, some key criticisms are starting to become more prevalent as the series progresses. Super Mario Party was criticized for having a lack of content and some weak boards, and while Mario Party Superstars fared much better, it didn't offer any original content. But Super Mario Party Jamboree looks like it could be the return to form that fans have been waiting for.

From the moment it was first announced in June, Nintendo has tried to showcase just how big Super Mario Party Jamboree will be. The announcement trailer went to great lengths to detail how Super Mario Party Jamboree will be the "biggest party yet," with more characters, boards, and minigames than ever before. And if Nintendo plays its cards right, Super Mario Party Jamboree could end up becoming the definitive entry in the franchise.

Super Mario Party Jamboree is already set to be the most complete entry in franchise history. Super Mario Party Jamboree will ship with at least 22 playable characters, five original boards, two remake boards, and over 110 minigames that encompass motion-controlled games, non-motion-controlled games, 1v3s, 2v2s, and classic free-for-alls. It seems as though Super Mario Party Jamboree might finally strike the perfect balance between offering original and remade content, and there will already be more than enough for fans to explore on launch day.

That said, if Nintendo wanted, it would likely be pretty easy to turn Super Mario Party Jamboree into a definitive all-in-one experience that lasts for multiple years, just like Mario Kart 8 before it. When Mario Kart 8 first launched in 2014, it was packed with a good mixture of original and remake tracks, but through an initial wave of DLC, it became an even more complete game. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe cemented this definitive position for the game, bringing the title to the Nintendo Switch.

Then in February 2022, almost eight years after the game's initial release, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Booster Course Pass DLC was announced. Between March 2022 and November 2023, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe received 12 new cups, 48 new tracks, and 8 new playable characters, essentially doubling the amount of content in the decade-old game.

While a new Mario Kart is sure to be released when the Nintendo Switch's successor finally drops, it won't take away from the fact that Mario Kart 8 has been the definitive Mario Kart experience for a decade. And if Super Mario Party Jamboree follows a similar path with a Switch 2 remaster and post-launch DLC, it could be the definitive Mario Party experience for years to come.

Thankfully, Super Mario Party Jamboree also has plenty of DLC options it could use to cement itself as the definitive Mario Party experience. Much like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Booster Course Pass, any Super Mario Party Jamboree DLC has years' worth of content to remake, and sprinkling in some original boards and minigames would give fans the best of both worlds.

Interestingly they added a "Championship ruleset" mode that has the following changes.

The following changes from the main Mario Party mode:
  • The game is locked to 12 turns.
  • There is only one Bonus Star (either Happening Star, Sightseer Star or Slowpoke Star) and it is announced at the start of the game.
  • You can choose to start with one of seven items from the beginning of the game.
  • Shops have a limited, set supply of items and once they are gone they will not restock.
  • Lucky Spaces allow you to pick between two set outcomes (get coins, get item), rather than a roulette.
  • If you land on a Bowser Space, Bowser is guaranteed to steal one star (the roulette is multiple repeats of this single outcome).
  • Boos will steal a fixed amount of coins.
  • Hidden Blocks do not appear.

I'm super glad that they decided to add that new mode in, sounds very interesting. Having only one Bonus Star to fight for makes things pretty cutthroat. Imagine if it's determined that there is only a minigame Bonus Star, the importance of them and the way you play the game can be impacted in new ways. We need modes like that to shake things up. Being able to set your own Custom Bonuses will be a game changer when that happens (assuming it will at some point down the line)

That would an interesting match, playing on Roll 'em Raceway and trying to avoid high rolls for the Slowpoke Bonus. Champion Mode definitely sounds like fun and a way to challenge players in new ways. Also it's a great option; having the ability to choose coins or an item for Lucky Bonus? That will turn those Lucky Spaces into spaces that call for more decision making, which is great. I wonder why they limit it to 12 Turns though? My favorite has always been the longer games. Especially with a mode like that, it sounds like it would be fun to play a 30 Turn game with those rules

Less than two weeks away from launch. This MP looks fantastic. Normally Mario Party games last about 10-18 months if they're made well. And then the interest kind of goes towards other games. At least for me, one of the more adamant supporters of these games. But Jamboree looks like it might hold interest for a couple years or maybe even more, with how in-depth the gameplay looks be. I haven't been looked too deeply into all the content of the game, but it does seem very action-packed and the gameplay looks as great as it's ever been if not better than it's ever been

@Shaqazooloo, you've probably seen the most content among us here. Do you think Jamboree will surpass the Orb system and the amount of tactics and strategies needed in those GCN Mario Party games, based on the gameplay you've seen?

Demos are starting to show up at some stores:

I would need to see a full game being played out but just thinking about the items and how they're handled it'll definitely be close no doubt. The item selection is probably gonna be one of the best in the series. Tons of options for all scenarios, theirs a warp to a shop (on top of also having the cellular shopper back from MP3), a warp to go to a random space, a warp to a rivals space, a warp to swap spaces with a random rival and a warp to swap spaces with a rival of your choice (assuming the Golden Mirror is just a better version of the regular mirror), most games in the series only have one or two of these available but Jamboree manages to get all of it and it doesn't seem broken. Thats only warp options though and they definitely give a ton more with the overall item selection and board designs. The traps (hexes) in the game are just as devastating as they were in DS, plenty of opportunities to steal stars and coins and while you can't place them that far from yourself you can put them on anything now which is a first for the series. If this isn't considered to be peak or near peak MP item system I'll be shocked.

The fact that Allies are back in an enormous deal for fans on the skill based style of play in Marip Party. Those who wish the games were a bit more skill based and a bit less involving luck. Because they (the allies) have dice blocks themselves that they'll use, they can probably do a lot of things that change a turn and the way the board is played, and now they change minigames too like they did in the first SMP. It's an understatement that Allies are a huge deal in this game; they're going to make the gameplay on boards incredibly fun because you have to take into account not only your Ally or Allies, but each other player's Allies as well and anticipate what will happen with them on some level the same

Tonight is the night. The game is finally here. I'm going to make some gradual adjustments to SMP Jamboree's official thread as I learn the game. I'm very curious and somewhat nervous to see if Chance Time can be heavily manipulated again 🤣
