Thread: Steam Deck IOTI These Things, They Take Time
Official Thread
It also confirms they're working on more revisions for the current SD, SD2, and other hardware, which is all good to hear.

We know they've been working on improving ARM support for their Proton compatibility layer, as well as (related but maybe less important) contributing to WayDroid, which is an Android compatibility layer, so it's safe to say either their next VR or handheld device might be an ARM device.

Ok you guys have swayed me!

Glossy 512gig or Etched 1gig 😅
Good choice. Not sure if I've ever heard of anyone regretting their Deck. I have the non-OLED etched screen, and it's great. And, there are supposedly screen protectors that can emulate the etched look if you decide to go with glossy and want to change it.

I've watched 2 hours of threads and videos glossy vs etched Decks and i still dont know why Valve would do me like this. Don't give me choice! FML 😅

Enjoy!

Ordered my Steam Deck! Went for the Glossy model in the end. When I saw how easy (and cheap-ish) it was to add a 2tb card, it just became a matter of gloss vs etched only, and I prefer gloss. The money I save I'll get a 2tb card down the line.

Looking forward to testing loads of games on it. I think there's quite a few Steam games that will be better on a smaller screen. Soul Reaver Collection will be my first new purchase for it.

So what are peoples favourite games to play on the Deck?

I'm currently playing some perverted game called Muse Dash and emulating New Super Luigi.

Every game that the deck can handle (in performance and controls) is automatically my favourite way to play said game. Go wild.

Since you just got your unit, I recommend launching into desktop mode and installing Heroic launcher for your GOG and Epic (and soon EA) games. I also recommend checking out deckyloader down the line, some of the plugins are a must in my opinion.

Muse Dash is great! Love how deceptively simple it is. The harder difficulties absolutely destroy me.

What's wrong with the steam deck?

It's fairly limited. It's perfectly fine for a lot of older games and most indies. I chose a ROG Ally with a Z1 Extreme for something a bit more capable.

But I suppose if the goal is to stream from the desktop, then the Steam Deck will be nearly perfect for @Hostile_18.

I mean, I've had no issues running anything with it. Albeit I don't play a lot of newer triple A games on it because of my PC. It runs RDR2 great which is what I've been playing lately on it.

It runs Elden Ring and Cyberpunk fine as well by all accounts. People's expectations of what a portable device can do has massively shifted if that's not enough 😜

I think I'm just a bit of a hardware snob. I bought in on the ROG Ally X even to just have the additional RAM. I've yet to find much of anything that won't run on it, but I've found plenty that if I bump up the graphical options will turn it into a slideshow!

When newer SoCs arrive, I will be upgrading just because. I've found that I love playing PC games on a handheld sitting on a couch. Now the only problem I run into is a lot of popular PC games seemingly have no native controller support. Like Civ 6. And Cities Skylines. Or even the C&C Remastered collection...

To be fair my expectations for graphics settings are quite low (and I'm hoping a small screen mitigates alot of this). If I want the full "phat" experience I'll have my 5090 and 77inch oled, 5.1, cinema seats etc. What excites me the most is games like Bioshocks and Resident Evils, that type of thing. If Uncharted and Spec Ops works I'll love that as well.

I believe those games will run just fine. I've been playing some God of War recently. Works perfectly. Smaller screens do help with the lower resolution. There's also a good Steam app called Lossless Scaling that can make a huge difference for frames.

A problem which could've been fixed had you got a deck instead of the ally. I use the trackpads + a community configuration to play games you wouldn't normally play with a controller, like Age of Empire 2, Plants vs Zombies, or a more exquisite example; System Shock Enhanced Edition, a game notrious for having awful/too many buttons to set up, works like a dream thanks to some random King who already went through the hassle and made a community configuration with custom menus and everything.

Initial impressions;

+ Premium packaging.
+ Great build quality (on the whole).
+ Software Integration.
+ Screen is a really decent size.

- Rattling face buttons, on the OLED versions are a turn off.
- Download speed is SUPER slow. It's surely a setting I need to look into.

It has Wifi6E so it shouldn't be slow.

I think it was connecting to my PC and trying to copy over the game files, rather than download.

I'm playing What Remains of Edith Finch and it's a great first game for the Deck. Really showcases the graphics and the impressive speakers.

Ps I love the built in hand warmer at the top. Great for these cold nights.

I see that's on sale. Recommended? How would you describe it??

It's a turn based roguelike (actual classic style) with brutal combat and a variety of directions you can take your mercenary company on each play through. A good blend of ranged and melee combat.

Failing a mission isn't the end. It's actually one of the more forgiving roguelike RPGs in terms of how many times you can mess up without spoiling the whole run. Flying around the solar system, picking up missions, trading for supplies and money, and slowly building up your mercenary crew is addictive.

The lore of the game is peak sci-fi and definitely worth exploring.
