Starlink is satellite internet being developed by SpaceX. The satellite mesh network is bringing faster speeds than any other satellite internet. They are doing this and they have yet to utilize their proprietary light array tech.

This satellite internet has the potential to bring internet to 50% of the world that does not have access yet. You think the collective hive mind is bad now? Wait until the other half of the world joins the party.

So why an OT? Following the news on this development is a massive hobby of mine. I will be posting updates. For those new here are some great videos.

Some recent milestones. They just broke 100k users and the tech is still very early in development. They have over 500k people already signed up waiting to get access.

The biggest shame of this whole project is that it will never have low latency, so it will be sub-optimal for gaming. Everything else will be awesome on it but gaming will stay on the ground, maybe forever.

What do you mean. It's pulling 20-80 ms currently. It's not the best but for some games it will be just fine.

Yeah for sure, but it will imo not be ideal for competitive gaming. I myself read it is 50+ which is very decent but if you say it can go as low as 20 then yeah, that is enough for even the most competitive games.
Anyone observed Starlink in their night skies?

Not seen the satellites over my location.
You won't be able to see them. They are fitted with an anti-reflection coating, at least that is what I heard.

Bezos has had a hate boner toward anything SpaceX touches and they have been desperately fighting them in court for everything. I think he is trying to let his companies catch up. I love the competition but can't stand their sleazy tactics.

A nice gesture to history and a little known giant of the space race of the cold war.

Elon knows his history as well as he knows physics. Dude always respects the greats who came before him and I love seeing him do stuff like this.... also it's clever organic marketing.

Just got done reading this. Look like they enabled starlink over Louisiana after the hurricane. Already Starlink has been crucial for natural disasters and they have yet to start using laser arrays. Soon as they do they will be able to activate the network pretty much anywhere without setting up ground relays.

I dunno why I was even thinking about this, but do you think you could put a satellite dish on your roof that got a stronger, more reliable connection to Starlink and then have your house wired to connect to that dish's connection? Would that improve the performance of your connection or is it overkill?
