Thread: Sony is set to increase PlayStation Plus annual subscription prices
I already won't pay $60. I only get Plus when cdkeys has it for like $28 or last year Sony offered it for $30. And even then it's a rip off for me. But I do occasionally like to play shit online...

I'm going more and more retro. Just finished TLOZ: Minnish Cap, going to play Metroid Zero Mission next, then the 3 Megadrive Sonic games.

It's got to that point where I just can't see the point in giving a shit about modern gaming. There's a few bright spots here and there, but for the most part old games are just more fun.

I still play new games here and there but yeah I'm finding myself replaying older games more often. Just completed Ultimate Doom and the Sigil levels and I'm having a blast

Expect the other two to follow suit.

PlayStation is and will remain my primary console so I will just take this on the chin and move on.

The flip side of this "new digital millenium" is everything becomes a compartmentalized monthly service.

Follow suit? Gamepass already got an increase if you're on ultimate it costs you over $200 a year

With nearly every Xbox and PlayStation game seemingly coming to PC there's almost no reason to own consoles anymore. This type of stuff is helping push me to that point now.

If it makes you feel any better the price to get PS5 performance or above is pretty insane. Pay now or pay later is the choice lol.

The thing is, especially with how half finished games are at release these days (even Baldur's Gate 3 apparently needs serious work in the 3rd act, from multiple player reviews I've read), does anyone but the most dedicated of graphics whores really need the latest and most powerful hardware?

If you're going to be waiting years for a game to be truly finished post release, why not just skip a generation and hit those backlogs, then buy cheap PC hardware once 10th gen hits to play 9th gen?

That's basically what I did with the Steam Deck. I'm playing all the old 8th gen and earlier games at native res 60fps on a handheld, and while it struggles with current gen titles, even then they're still mostly playable.

Low to mid end PC now gives the best value for money, and that's not changing in the foreseeable future. A bit of patience and self control will mean even if you're a strictly non portable gamer, a PC will be cheaper and better for gaming from here on out, even if you never spend more than the cost of a console. Just resist FOMO and wait for the price to be as reasonable as it did a couple of decades ago.

I know what I'm about to say runs contrary to the standard PC logic, but in my experience there's even less of a reason to own PC nowadays unless you're already into it. Consoles are budget devices that let you experience most of what's hot in the gaming hobby. If "modern gaming" isn't doing it for you, paying 4x for a rig to have even more access to "modern gaming" is stupid.

if this generation was amazing across the platforms, PC would be more attractive. As it stands, PC is mostly just Early Access for the games that eventually make it to console, while console is Early Access for the Japanese games that eventually make it to PC. The unique proposition of either platform died a decade ago

I stopped renewing several months ago. They simply weren't adding games I'm interested in. It was a waste. It was always a waste anyway. Games i actually will play, I buy. If I won't just buy it and I try it on PS Plus, I realize I don't want to play it. And I don't play online anyway. Nothing gained.

Faster than it seemingly takes them to add good PS1 and PS2 classics, I can have the entire libraries of both systems upscaled and molded at my fingertips.

While true, at the same time I don't have to pay for a yearly subscription to play online. I have access to much cheaper games and way better sales. I can start a game on my PC, turn it off and go hang out with my daughter and continue it on my steam deck. For me, right now it's just the better play. I did spend a lot building my PC but the last one I built lasted me quite a long time. It's not for everyone and I get that but for myself it is.

I decided to cancel mine. I bought my PS Premium for 2 years when PSNow converted and was $60. I was excited for PS1 games with trophies and they didn't really deliver much there. Paying $60 is a bit of a stretch. Paying $160 is a rip off. Paying $60 for online is a bit of a rip off but I will bite the bullet. I decided paying $80 for that is past my limit. I've been subscribed to PS+ since day 1.

I don't see anything wrong with that approach, only that your story confirms what I said: the unique proposition of the platforms is dead. Anything you mentioned I can do with my consoles, plus physical ownership is a big plus. So I don't have as much incentive to get a PC when my consoles cover most of what's out there, an inverse of what you described.

rewind to mid 90s/early 00s and there were entire genres thriving on console that were missing on PC, and entire genres thriving on PC that were missing on consoles. It's just not the same, sadly

@Phil_t98 it's just not aimed at me. I don't tend to play games at launch, for a variety of reasons. So, any new game that leaves GP a few months after launch doesn't count for me. The money I would've spent on GP (or PS+) gets spent instead on smaller titles from B-tier devs and indies. The big AAA games always, always end up in a better place after I wait a few months.
