Sony Is Pulling Horizon: Zero Dawn From PS Plus Amid PS5 Remaster Rumors

Sony has signaled its intention to pull Horizon: Zero Dawn from PlayStation Plus later in May, fueling rumors the company is set to announce a PlayStation 5 remaster of the game.

Redditor Melodic_Cake_3344 spotted a new message on the PlayStation dash warning Horizon: Zero Dawn's inclusion in the PS Plus Extra Game Catalog ends on May 21. As verified by Eurogamer, this specifically relates to Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition, which includes the Frozen Wilds expansion.

Sony's decision to pull one of its biggest first-party games from PS Plus has only fueled rumors it is set to announce a PS5 remaster of Guerrilla's much-loved action adventure, first released as a PlayStation 4 exclusive in 2017 before coming to PC in August 2020.

Reports of a Horizon: Zero Dawn remaster emerged in October 2022, when VGC said an updated version of Aloy's first adventure on PS4 was set for PS5. We haven't heard anything since, but the removal of Horizon: Zero Dawn from PS Plus may indicate the impending arrival of its remaster, possibly even shadow dropped as part of a May State of Play showcase.

According to VGC's report, the Horizon Zero Dawn remaster features improved visuals to bring it up to par with its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, with new character models, lighting and animations. It will also have added accessibility features, graphics modes, and quality of life improvements to gameplay. Sony has yet to comment on the reports.

Following the news, some questioned the need for a Horizon Zero Dawn remaster, given the PS4 game is currently playable on PS5 with a 4K, 60 frames per second update. But it's worth noting that Sony has form when it comes to remasters of its games, most recently releasing a remaster of Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man, a remake of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part I, and a remaster of The Last of Us Part II.

Sony has said it will not release any major existing PlayStation franchise games before April 2025, leaving 'second-party' exclusives such as Arrowhead's Helldivers 2, Team Ninja's Rise of the Ronin, and Shift Up's Stellar Blade to plug the gaps this year. Remasters and remakes are also in-line to keep PlayStation going until a raft of significant exclusive PS5 games hit in 2025.

Streaming is shit. You can tell it can't be that good of an upgrade if they have to pull the old "free" one. God forbid we give people choice.

This will justify buying a PS5!!!!

Seriously though, what the fuck is going on with the supreme lack of Gen 9 (only) games? I have a very strong suspicion that Sony is sandbagging to load up the tail end of the Gen to ensure sales of Gen 10…. So this terrible bait/switch cycle can continue.

You know exactly what's going on. They ran out of courage and imagination.

Not sure I understand why this game needs a remake unless it's being remastered to take advantage of PS5 Pro features, but even then I don't know how much of a difference it will make.

It was the game that made me realize I really hate crafting consumable items in games. Ugh

and they want to release a rumoured $700 console this year to play......remasters of remasters

They're so fucked it's hilarious, Nintendo is being handed a stress-free launch window for the entirety of 2025 which will allow them to knock it out the park with the switch 2 even more than they would've under historical conditions where Sony was actually competent. I don't really think the PS5 Professional can save them, even with this consoomer centric market these days.

I am at a point where I want Playstation and Xbox to leave the gaming business. Given that most Triple A games are bought by console gamers and the severely terrible dei practices, unfinished games and micro transactions, etc, both of them departing would help the industry heal. I support every terrible decision they continue to do so their relevancy declines.

I think you are right in a lot of regards, but the PS5 pro will sell regardless to the same dumb dumbs who bought the OG model. People think Nintendo is the console for the casual crowd, but really whenever they release a dud (GC, Wii U), no one buys it. Sony on the other hand can release a bad console and they'll still end up on top, because nothing has changed from the 90s and kids above the age of 10 think Nintendo is for kids. They ask their parents to buy the latest playstation for Christmas because kids got to have the latest thing. They use it to play fortnite and other casual games. Believe me, I work with a lot of kids. Most of them play on PS5, and the ones that do have a Switch also have the PS5. How many kids reacting to PS5 vids do we see at Christmas each year? Sony can bank on these people to buy their latest console just because their dedicated fanbase will continue to eat the garbage they feed them and kids just want to have the newest toy available.

Horizon Zero Dawn could use a remaster maybe, but there are several hundred games and neglected franchises that are far more deserving of a basic remaster nevermind a full remake even sticking to just Sony and excluding the obvious Bloodborne option.

Possibly the most outright unnecessary Remake in recent years, alongside Dead Space and Last of Us 1/2.

i didnt think about that...thats an incredible head start and even if sony was going to release sequels and wolverine in 2026 there would of been almost a year of MS finally releasing all their first party stuff
and the switch 2 most likely coming in at half the price of the ps5 pro

Could not get engaged with Zero Dawn. Put probably 40+ hours into it. Just kept waiting for it to click, never did. Felt by the numbers and Guerilla still doesn't know how to tell a story. They come up with great concepts but the execution is always terrible.

I think the most annoying thing is that you can only climb surfaces with yellow paint. Game was pure "look but don't touch."
