I just got a 5g phone a couple of weeks ago with my stimulus check. The 5g just became available maybe a month or two ago where I live.

I'm really not noticing that much of a difference. Videos still buffer and stall and I still get drops down to 240p on YouTube even when trying to watch at 360p.

Overall I'm just not noticing any differences at all really.

Sort of a disappointment since I was expecting a significant jump in speed especially after all the hype I've heard about this.

From what I understand, it really is. Keep in mind, this is just a casual watching Marques Brownlee reviews.

But most areas don't even support 5G right now, and if they do, I understand the battery pull on a phone to be so intense, the phone only jumps to 5G if it's dealing with a strenuous download, or a ton of data being passed up and down quickly. Regular use case? You're probably just going to be on 4G LTE.

You're on low band 5G (which isn't any better than LTE at this point and travels just as far).

High band 5G (Ultra Wide Band) is like magic, but travels VERY short distances and doesn't penetrate materials.

MetroPCS which as I understand it is now owned by T-Mobile which as I also understand are the forefront of 5g tech blah blah.

Ehhhh not quite.
I'll put it this way... NOBODY has their 5G implemented well at the moment nor will they for some time. It's marketing gibberish for now unless you are in an UWB zone (which is very few places and their implementation zones are so small they are measured in blocks not miles)

I did some Google-fu after posting this and I read what you basically just said.

Now I'm starting to wonder if I should've just saved my money and upgraded to a cheaper 4g phone?

4G/LTE is lower bandwidth longer reach. 5G is the opposite.

They just introduced 5G to give people Covid some Karen on YouTube told me.

I didn't even buy in to it but since my service provider started "updating" the area for 5G (this is what they told me anyway) I can't use my phone in my house at all anymore without hugging one specific outer wall. I also had to turn off LTE or I wouldn't even have service, I was stuck roaming for 2 weeks before I found out turning it off let me use my phone as a phone.

My 4g signal was consistently dropping and kept getting worse which I why I got a new 5g phone. Suspiciously the 4g was doing this and getting worse while they've been upgrading to 5g.
