Finally got videos for new iRacing content.

That new Aston just sounds so sexy. I'll be picking that up for sure.

Also for anyone who is interested Humble has a new sim racing bundle up that is quite good.

Yeah, I bit since I wanted a few of them.

If anyone wants the key for the 3 months for iRacing, let me know. I am not going to use it and you are welcome to it (new users only, apparently).

Go on give it a try, it's fun and the free content is pretty good.

This Friday I will be receiving:

Thrustmaster TX which includes:
- TX Servo Base
- Leather Edition Racing Wheel
- T3PA Pedal Assembly
+
Thrustmaster TH8A Shifter
+
GT Omega Apex Racing Wheel Stand

I'm planning to use this setup on both Series X and PC although I only have a basic gaming laptop, what's performance like for the below specs?

Lenovo Legion Y7000:

i7 9750H 6 Cores @ 2.6GHz
16GB DDR4 2666MHz System Ram
GTX 1660TI 6GB DDR6 Video Ram
512GB NVME SSD for Applications
2TB SATA SSD for Storage

I will be going for framerate performance over everything else, I generally only play RTS, 4x Strategy and Eve Online on it and it seems to eat that stuff up. I'll probably grab that bundle if I can get locked 60fps minimum.

Anyway, should be fun times this weekend!

So I'm running the T300 wheel and absolutely love it. The TX is apparently quite a lot better so that's a decent acquisition. I didn't bother with Thrustmaster's pedals - I went down the Fanatec route there. Re the computer - that's basically what I run except you have a more modern CPU. I can run basically all the sims bar Dirt Rally 2 and Assetto Corsa Competizione in VR @ 90fps - the latter two have stuttering issues due to poor performance and no amount of tweaking gets them working well. AC original and RFactor 2 work brilliantly. I ran triples at 1080p on my 970 before I got the 1660 super and that coped with iRacing and RFactor 2 on triples and that's when RFactor 2 wasn't as well-optimised as it is today.

So, in short, you'll be good to go.

Cheers mate - that sounds encouraging re: PC

The Thrustmaster Pedals are part of the package with the Wheel and Base:

TX Pack

And the Gear Shifter was quite expensive too:

Shifter

I'll probably go in on that bundle tonight - you got me thinking about VR now haha!

Yeah I'd quite like a shifter, wouldn't mind a handbrake too for rally and rallycross, even though I'm shit at both. Re VR - I'm on a Rift CV1 - not everyone gets on with this stuff but I fucking love it. In online races it's basically a cheat mode because I have much more of a sense of where the car is than I can have with triples - I can squeeze the car into gaps others wouldn't dare to. Well worth it.

Yeah I'll probably use the shifter for Rally titles and Forza Horizon. Paddles are probably best for F1 and other more track centric classes. I did have the Xbox 360 wheel/pedal set back in that gen, it was a lot of fun but obviously very cheap.

Have been looking at a lot of Sim YouTube stuff these past few weeks, it's spurned me on to make this purchase. Some of the VR stuff looks fantastic and immersive - something I'm sure to follow up on. I do have a TrackIR sitting here, used it a lot in ARMA for piloting Aircraft - I might try that in the meantime.

Never tried track ir - it looked a bit weird to me and it seems to me you'd have to have it really perfectly calibrated to make it work vs the plug in and go of VR (ok not quite - you need your sensors set up but that's a one time thing and modern VR doesn't even bother with that).

It works surprisingly well. Obviously pre-VR technology but it's well honed for what it offers. It might seem to be a cumbersome system to use but it's the opposite. It becomes very natural because a lot of the subtle physical motions the user is already performing regardless of the system. VR betters it in every way to be sure and I have several tabs open now looking at options.

Heh just remembered - I swapped a DayZ standalone code for that TrackIR setup 😂

The best bang for buck right now is the Oculus Quest 2 - can be tethered to your PC so it's not just the standalone. That said, there is the facebook problem. My Rift is ok because it's old enough I have an old Oculus account and no Facebook account but a lot depends on your stomach for privacy, etc.

Ahh - I don't do Facebook. Did Valve iterate on their offering?

Not yet as far as I know. Your other option is to hold fire and see how long it takes for the next gen of VR gear to come along - I'm thinking something akin to what Sony are doing with PS VR with foveated rendering etc.

They removed the Facebook requirement recently or are in the process of removing it.

I have a Q2 with a 3080ti and between super sampling and 8x msaa in iracing it's perfectly clear.

I did have a Valve index and I hated it. Sent it back. It was the only Vr headset I've ever had that I could feel the heat coming off the screen. And it's impossible to wear glasses in there. Of course I did end up buying rx lenses for my quest 2 recently and that was worth it.

You don't need the account but it's still a Facebook product so I can understand the concern. Certainly it bothers me.

I got prescription lenses for my rift and yeah it makes a big difference - you can wear glasses in there provided they're not too wide but it's not as comfortable for obvious reasons.

I was able to get my glasses in there but getting in and out was a pain. Lenses were worth every dollar for sure.

Yeah I got new glasses and they were a bit of a pain which is what prompted me to get the lenses. Makes a huge difference tbh - so much less fucking about.

Well everything turned up late yesterday afternoon so it looks like I will have my hands full for the rest of the day. I really should be working but will put a few things off for now.

Just grabbed that bundle too so no doubt I'll be digging into those titles over the next few weeks.

Decided to have a play with the new 2022 F1 cars in Automobilosta 2 and was thoroughly impressed. Threw it around Interlagos and Imola and had a blast. The handling is lovely, really decent wheel feedback, and it rewards precision with your pedals. Very easy to spin the wheels in low gears.

Gave it a shot in the wet at Monaco with predictable results - it's a very hard car to drive in those conditions at that track. Not much room either if there's traffic.

Bonus points I tried the lorries in the wet at Monaco - those things have so much torque, they're surprisingly hard to drive especially with the brakes being basically ornamental. Not really enough room at Monaco as you'd expect so the racing gets quite rough.

Autimobilista is shaping up to be a really nice package, the ui is slick, performance is solid, still not tried online but they've got a decent little sim there.

I bought my first ever racing wheel, Logitech G29, for Gran Turismo. Wow. This makes the game so much more fun and actually a lot easier.

I think I've opened a Pandora's box…

I'm going to have to find a game that has the Circuit of Americas track…

The F1 game will have it. Or if you want a cheap good option look at Assetto Corsa, there's a tonne of mods for it and it's a fantastic sim (the original, not the sequel). If you want to get competitive look at IRacing. All this is PC - my console knowledge isn't so good.

I'm pretty much a PC/PS gamer so I'm fine with playing either.

COTA is local to me so that's why I want to be able to play it. I also signed up to drive a Huracan on it in a couple of months so it would be nice to get some "practice" Ahead of time.

Hmm so IRacing has it laser scanned but the mod for Assetto Corsa at https://assettocorsa.club/mods/tracks/circuit-of-the-americas.html looks good. I used IRacing and RFactor 2 to practice Silverstone and Donington before I took a Caterham R300 around them and can confirm the validity of that approach - I was able to go flat out from lap 1 which was nice, especially when I'd not driven a car in 10 years even on public roads.

Looks like Assetto Corsa 1 has the Huracan in GT3and Super Trofeo variants.

Assetto Corsa mod for COTA looks ok…

… though in general I'd prefer a proper laser scanned version to be sure - helps to give more confidence for blind corners.

Just checking in with regards to my purchases last month.

What a revelation, I am blown away by my setup each time a use it. The sense of being in the moment is immensely rewarding. That 360 setup I had way back when is merely a toy in comparison.

PC: I gave Dirt Rally 2.0 a spin on my gaming laptop and it runs fine at 1080/60 but the hardware isn't really up to snuff for me as it sounds like a 737 crash landing. I have never played any 3d intensive games on this machine so I guess it was always going to be this way.

Series X: Everything runs near perfectly; from Forza 4, F1 2020 to Dirt Rally 2.0 it's fast boot into OS/games and the machine is dead silent.

The title I have been playing and enjoying the most is Dirt Rally 2.0. Using full manual transmission with H Pattern shifting is an experience second to none. The force feedback is convincing to say the least. I can say the bulk majority of playtime on my driving rig has been with this title.

I'm going to start planning a new PC build, I want it to perform at least on parity with the Series X so 1080p/60 to 4K/60 with emphasis on and silent running at desired resolution/frames and quick boot into games. Any suggestions on that will be appreciated.

I am also going to sell on the Apex frame when the build is complete and move into a more permanent setup that has seat/wheel/monitor fixings integrated as one unit. There are a few obvious benefits to that.

Anyway, good times. It's been a blast!

I use a 1660GTX and that copes with triple screens or VR fine but I'm beginning to hit limits on some games so probably worth stepping up to a 3060 or better. My 10 year old cpu causes issues when racing against too many AI cars, but not fatally, so likely any modern core i5 or i7 will be fine. SSD is a must, and 16GB of RAM will do the job for most things. I've not yet encountered anything that needs more outside of video editing and running virtual machines.

@HariSeldon

Hey mate - with regards to the SSD is there a mobo with a specific pci lane setup to be focusing on for near future SSD technologies?

I'm thinking about an i9 12900k setup with RAM/SSD as fast as possible for that chipset. GPU just has to handle 1080/60 on High as worst case scenario.

Tbh I just used SATA and that's fine for me, I'll leave it to others to get more technical but bear in mind my desktop is 10 years old - just adding an SSD and GTX 1660 Super has seen it keep on playing everything on good settings that whole time.

1080/60 is a piece of cake by the way - my system is handling the 90FPS you need for VR, driving the 2 screens of the VR and 2 of my 3 triples (1080p) simultaneously.

Cool!

I'll check more builds out this week. I don't want to get in a constant PCMR upgrade cycle though so I don't mind paying for something decent now rather than trying to keep up with component iteration upgrades every six months.

Have you used that Codemasters service RaceNet? I have mates on all platforms and it seems to tie leaderboard together across the consoles and PC.

Tbh I haven't - online I only really bother with IRacing and maybe an occasional public AC lobby.

On hardware - things move slower these days as my ancient pc testifies, so don't worry you'll get plenty of years out of it either way though sadly components prices suck right now.

Proper version of Donington on RFactor 2 - fantastic. I've driven the track for real (used iRacing to prepare) and it's got a lovely flow, and there are some fun places to overtake. Excellent news.

Due to having a new baby I've not been racing online - I need to stick to things I can easily quit instantly. To that end I've done a few races on IRacing using their AI. It's actually pretty good tbh, quite satisfying racing with opponents being quite crafty much to my surprise.

Lots of new British Touring Car Championship content. Also Laguna Seca which is a great track.

Meanwhile IRacing have teased Fiji in Japan.
cover-image

Finally Raceroom Racing Experience is treading on IRacing's toes by adding ranked multiplayer championships.

It's funny. As much as I did iracing for a while I didn't try the AI stuff. I tend to mostly just run Test now a days that I'm starting to get a little more into it. Wouldn't mind running some Ai stuff today. Just to get me in the groove again so I can racing in actual series again.

Congrats btw. Enjoy.

Tomorrow the season 3 update deploys for iRacing and they've just posted a teaser for the new Radical SR10, presumably replacing the existing Radical SR8 - it looks like it's broadly occupying a similar space on the service and in real life it seems the SR10 is a more durable version of the SR8 (ie one requiring a bit less maintenance effort). When I've been on track days in the Caterham R300 the Ferraris were easy enough, the Porsches a piece of cake, but there were two types of car that I couldn't live with. The Lotuses were loud and lovely, and the Radical was an absolute fucking monster. The video looks like it's a fun lively handful so I imagine I'll get some mileage out of it.
