Thread: Silent Hill 2 launches October 8, 13-minute gameplay trailer

That's some high resolution photorealistic ugliness alright.

Honestly I think this is part of the problem with modern games.

It's so focused on technical detailing, the amount of effects and the clarity of image, the ability to zoom in on a handful of pixels in a 4K image and count the number of pores on a face, the number of ants climbing a tree, or the how many glowing particles are erupting from a pride flag, that people have lost the ability to step back and judge the image being portrayed on it's artistic and aesthetic merits.

Because just as we see here, from that point of view of whether a game actually looks good or not, far too many AAA slop games nowadays are a hideous, overly busy mess, deep in the uncanny valley, with awful art direction and slapdash unnecessary crap everywhere, that takes technically accomplished components and builds them into a whole that is vastly worse than the sum of it's parts.

This is an ugly game with ugly characters, and all it has going for it is a level of detail that will quickly be surpassed, making it look even worse in a few years time than it does now, when more technically impressive, overly detailed and 'realistic' looking games come out.

Ngl, this is probably one of the worst posts I've ever read...

I'm gonna take it you've given up on Modern Gaming Culture, just like myself, but I genuinely disagree with your take on Silent Hill 2 Remake in particular.

There's a lot of wrong with the remake, but graphically, there's nothing like it.

Once the final product is released, you will see the brilliance.

I'm just passed caring about photorealism. The characters are ugly, the environment just looks like a slightly less dirty London on a foggy day, and nothing about the physics or effects blows my mind.

It's just a more vivid version of the last photorealistic slop.

Astrobot looks 1000 times better graphically. I don't care if it's less technically impressive, it just looks better.

But yes, I have been playing on the PS2 again recently. The past is a future country.
