Sable will launch for Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC via Steam on September 23, publisher Raw Fury and developer Shedworks announced.

Love it, can't wait. I thought I'd hate that music but it fits well and its not annoying.

Imagine the MC animations but with motion interpolation turned on. Truly terrifying.

The gameplay actuallly made me slightly less hyped tbh, its quite boring imo, but its just the start of the game probably so not too worried. I really hope we can easily super sample the shite out of this to clean up the IQ but I think that aliased look may be part of the art style for them so unless you use approximate or temporal AA it will be crusty even at 8K due to the engine.

I don't think this is a game where you want to be blurring any of the micro detail since thats the whole thing so if crusty no matter the resolution (ie 4K) I'll prioritise fps to the point of maybe (trying to) run it at 1440p@120hz. I don't think running this game at 30fps will be a massive problem since the MC animation is so low fps, but if its crusty regardless I'd go for 60fps at least to get the better responsiveness.

Thanks for updating the thread with the new video @Kadayi though, I'm still very excited for it even if I sound all doom, gloom and graphics-whiney.

p.s. - I hope people realise as I post here more that I'm just critical of graphics/IQ because its a passion for me, I can still judge the gameplay outside of that separately, I can't think of many games where its actually intertwined to the point where aliasing detracts from the gameplay/story itself.

If I can make IQ/graphics better I'll try to before playing, if I can't then I'll just play.

I think they are wise to slap an AlphaFootage on it for sure because I love the aesthetics but yeah there's a lot to still do in terms of refinement, not the least of which is the obnoxiously large UI screen which could comfortably be half the size.

I had a check and it's up on Steam now as well

Oh thank god, this MS store version is awful, I can't even stop it from running in borderless fullscreen, I just tried to uninstall it and there was no option on the store or downloads page.

I had to right click on the tile in the start menu and click uninstall there, how would I have uninstalled it if I hadnt put it on the start menu as a tile?! Add remove programs I'm guessing, which is a farce compared to other launchers.

An awful experience as before, thank god for Steam.

Thanks!! @Kadayi

Let us know how it plays. Albeit I downloaded it I doubt I'll get to play it tonight sadly

Okay I'm still battling with it on a technical level, the game runs at 60fps during the logos and on the start screen but when you press start/any button it applies a 30fps cap to the game. There appears to be no v-sync even when its in borderless windowed and Win10 is taking control of it through the WDM (ie "disable display optimisations" is left unchecked), so you get tearing if you just boot it as is.

So now I'm just trying to get rid of the tearing and run it at as high a res as possible since 4K30 uses 45% of my GPU in the opening shot of the whole valley, but adaptive and scanline-sync don't seem to work so far, it just ignored them and tore regardless.

At this point I just want to play it and I would just let it use the Win10 applied v-sync but that causes stutters constantly :(

Will update again soon.

edit 1 - Okay I restarted the game and its not as laggy anymore so I think that was just some weirdness with alt-tabbing, but with the Win10 desktop v-sync its still stuttery. It doesn't feel like 30fps lag-wise so I think its still 60hz, but being framerate limited to 30, strange stuff, but I suppose they didnt want the low fps character animation look weird if you ran it at 60fps.

edit 2 - ugghhhhhhhhhhhhhh... I dunno how to fix this, I think the stutters are all connected to it constantly trying to force borderless fullscreen, it does it every time you pause the game and I have to alt-enter twice to get back to exclusive fullscreen. I just tried forcing v-sync off in nvidia control panel but its still on. Currently searching for a Unity config file to see if I can disable it through that.

edit 3 - Jesu Christi I had a bad time with this :( I just wanted to forget about all this tech bollocks and enjoy the game but its a technical shitshow in many way.

I'm watching E3 stuff now so can't write my full experience but I found out from the devs that game is capped to 30fps and it has bad stuttering when its not in exclusive fullscreen (which the game doesn't natively support in-game you must force it via the command line option in steam) due to either the shit v-sync implement or borderless fullscreen itself or both, on top of that the game will force itself to go back to borderless fullscreen EVERY TIME you pause the game, so you have to alt-enter twice when you go back to the game to get ex. fullscreen and thus avoid stutters.

You also have to force non-adaptive v-sync via nvidia control panel to get proper framepacing, you still get loading stutters as you traverse the map, like Jedi Fallen Order or RE2R/RE3R/RE8.

The input lag isn't bad at 30fps (thank fuck) but its been a massive fuck around trying to get it working properly tbh. Not a great start tbh, but hopefully they can patch it up a bit before launch in terms of ex. fullscreen support and more choice over the fps/refresh rate.

Gave the Demo a blast. From a technical perspective, it's still a little rough and ready as evinced by @Kuranghi post above, but in terms of the actual game itself looking past those aspects, it's kind of enjoyable. What I would say is that it's basically essential in what is the tutorial area to follow the instructions versus free roam because you need to unlock the glide ability before you can really explore as the game is built around traversal, but your character is bound by a finite amount of stamina when it comes to climbing, so you need to figure out routes and that often times requires getting across gaps.

This game looks so good, love the style. Seriously thinking about playing it. Hope they'll fix the technical issues though.

Yeah, I picked it up at launch, but I have been a bit too busy to get around to it, though I figured that as with anything I'm as well to wait for it to be patched. Plus I'm waiting for my new controller to arrive and apparently albeit it has been put together and packaged, there's a delay in transit so I won't be getting it until Wednesday at the earliest. :|

I'm very keen to get into this as well but I'm holding off until a potential fix of the issues, if you want to know if they will bother you or not then watch at least the first 10 seconds of this and see what you think:

The aliasing is pretty furious in this one due to the art style and other reasons, and I can put up with it because I know the TAA in Unity is shite so they probably didn't like how it blurred the art of the game and so didnt include it, I can accept its part of the charm of the game but the moire pattern artifacts are a bit egregious at times and really take my attention away when I'm just trying to relax in the world.

Put a bit of time into it today. Basically cleared the tutorial area and gotten to the first recommended location outside of there. It's a charming game in itself. It just feels like from a production viewpoint it could have benefitted from a bit more smoothness to things. For instance, screen tear seems to be a bit of an issue at least for me (admittedly I'm playing on my rather aged 1070Ti) but there's no Vsync option (I've just set it up using Nvidia Control Panel...which hopefully will sort it). Similarly, I can't help but feel the game could have benefitted from more work on things like the characters running animation, and the like (which feels somewhat stilted).

As far as the game itself goes, it's all about traversal, exploring and collecting, which if like me you are into you will enjoy immensely. It's definitely worth looking around and seeing where you can get, as there are lots of rewards to find squirrelled away if you take the time to look for them (if there's something to climb up it's usually with giving it a go as you might find some Cut (coins) or Chum eggs). However, even in the tutorial area, it's clear that you need to upgrade your characters abilities before you are likely to reach at least one location and that won't be possible until after the tutorial section is complete. Still early on you get a sense of what's possible and what's 'No way Jose' at this point in time. Also with the climbing, it's seemingly worth jumping at an incline as that strangely doesn't cost you any stamina, but will provide you with a a couple less feet on the stamina drain.

Anyway back to it.

I bought it at launch. I haven't quite wrapped it up, but I was having a good time with it. However life got busy and so it joined the long list of titles I put down midway/3/4th of the way through (plan is to wrap it up over the Xmas break). It suffers from a little bit of jankiness tbh and some of the artistic choices didn't work great (the game looks great during the day, but night-time could be a bitch) well, however, they have been patching quite a lot so maybe it's much improved since. My biggest gripe was the same repeat animation playing whenever you find one of these eggs, as there are hundreds of them in the game (and you do want to collect them) I can understand the first time, but after that..not so much.

Played like 20min. Performance is a joke tbh. I have a 3080 and playing at 4k, need to cap it at 60fps, because it fluctuates a lot. Drops into the mid 50s, goes up to the 100s. Which is shocking for such a visually primitive game. But capped at 60 , the couple frame drops from time to time aren't bad with Gsync.

But you really, really need to use reshade and infuse MSAA and FXAA. Makes a huge difference and reduces the crazy ugly flickering. It's still not a clean game by any means, but way better that way.

Look at that area in front of the tent. In motion the difference is huge.

The Art style is great, but the problem is there's no differential when it comes to the line weight over distance. they put in a bit of atmosphere to fade things (see above), however, the lines are the same weight in the foreground and the background. It's fine outside, but less than stellar when you are in any of the interior spaces as it makes gauging distance surprisingly tricky.

But omg at the woke bs a couple minutes into the game. The second character you meet is non binary!!! You need to go to Halil, they expect you! Calling that person "they/them".

Come on. I was so confused until I understood what this is about.

Honestly, I don't recall any pandering. I guess I was more just invested in the doing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There's a certain sense of scale to the game at points, which is quite breathtaking in its own way.

It's not pandering. It's the theme of the game. It's all about identity. Multiple individuals that identify themselves as "they/them", your bike has an identity and was always meant to have these parts built onto it, it's all about masks, you don't see if characters are male or female etc.

sablescreenshot2021.1wcjaq.png

Utarii identifies as they, your bike Simoon is female.

Interview with one of the devs:

"If everyone in that world wears masks then that changes their relationship with identity, and they choose which mask they wear. Your mask is your identity more than your body, and if you don't show people your face - that's more important to them, it changes the way they think about your identity, which is not so much tied to your biology as to the way you represent yourself to the world."

I myself admit when I first saw Sable appear, I had no idea what gender she was: a reaction Kythreotis says he enjoys.

"I think it was important that we didn't take an archetypal, typical feminine approach to the character design. Or overtly, at least. It was an approach that was as gender neutral as possible, and we want the player to make decisions about how they approach different situations without applying gender roles from our world."

"It's much more interesting than having our standard, gender role-patriarchal society projected into this sci-fi universe.

THE PATRIARCHY!!!!! Fuck that.

This really bothers me as I can't stomach the agenda driven dialogues and characters. I love the world, the setting, the exploration, sound. It could be such a great little game. But I hate that it pushes the LGBTQIA agenda this hard and don't want to support it at all. Tried to refund it, but I already exceeded the playtime because I explored a lot before I realized this shit. Nope, I'm out.

Big part of such an "artistic" experience are ones emotions, a bond with the main character, feeling the world etc. But when I despise all the characters because they are just speakers for gender activists, it's hard for me to really enjoy the game anymore.

I'll be honest, It might be an English thing but it's not unusual to say 'They' as a descriptor in 'They nudged the dog off the sofa' , 'They went to the check who was at the door' 'They waved me off'.

Thanks for the clarification! In what context is it being used? Because other characters are being referred to by other pronouns. Is it normal to say to one person "I looked at them?"

Because together with the comments from the devs, it looks like it's a concious decision for some characters.

That's not usual either tbh. Put it this way, as a native English speaker, it didn't register to me as particularly odd, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There might be some intentionality on their part to it, but again it didn't register as such to a degree that I noticed it, and you know I'm not one for 'wokeness' as a general rule. Going back to your comment about the bike being referred to as female. All my cars have been female as in 'She needs a good wash' or 'She handles really well'. This could be a cultural thing.

I understand that and might be too sensitive about this stuff, so thanks for a different perspective. But that bike part was especially revealing for me. The character said that the new parts of the bike that you need to find always belonged to it, that we will then determine its identity. It was just a bike, but then it became a she and found her true identity and what she always was. It's quite literally what the dialogue was like.

Again, I have sensitive antennas regading this and it stuck out to me, because the general theme is very much about identity and that everyone can forge his/her/their own identity, biology and other boundries don't exist. It's just up to you and your feelings!
