The pivot to games as a service model will be the death of a lot of the more creative studios with more risk averse owners.

Hopefully now Arkane have shat out this disaster they can get back to making excellent immersive sims given they have essentially unlimited financial backing and an owner desperate for any W they can get.

I'm not hopeful. This is a competitive industry. Arkane was a smaller studio punching above their weight and were already losing talent. The incentive is to leave Arkane and start your own 'Arkane-like' studio which is what some of the founders already did.

Plus, we cannot forget how these games are actually greenlit and made. There are no AAA-budget games getting greenlit without ALSO planning the skeleton of the marketing, the post-launch DLC, the "multimedia" and franchising opportunities, and so forth.

Arkane might fart out a Dishonored 3 and a Prey 2 because it's easier to check the boxes (described above) on an existing successful IP. but I have zero hope they'll actually make a new franchise with the same scope and potential as either Prey or Dishonored. Even if the talent, ambition, money, and time were there, the fact remains that anything by Arkane is going to be made from the beginning with an HBO series, a graphic novel spinoff, a PopVinyl line, a collector's edition and a Super Collector's edition, etc etc etc.

These companies wanna pass themselves off as Wonka's Chocolate Factory where "the gamers" fiddle with the best mechanics and discover the most interesting games for the Customers to play this year, when in reality they're all chasing their own AAA tail, chasing trends too late and getting left further behind.

The change of business model should always been seen as a defensive hedging maneuver. If they could charge you 70, they would, and they do.

This asshole game designer says monsters in his game are the rich and its purpose is to delight in killing them, and everybody's fine with this. Comments love it, anybody disapproving is a 'bootlicker.' The trillion dollar company with its rich CEO are fine with it. Reviewers probably are fine with it.

What a rotten world.

Harvey Smith trying to pretend he isn't absolutely caked is some funny shit too. Not billionaire levels of comfort, but certainly way above your average pleb

CLEARLY the media didn't get the message that the game was a corollary on wealth being vampiric, which is an ironic statement to make given that it's published on Microsoft platforms. But regardless, if they realized this it would've been OMG 10 best game ever. The little communists writing in cramped silicon valley hovels would have LOVED IT.

It's like a Wish.com version of Levine's Objectivism in Bioshock.

Bethesda Accidentally Copyright Claims Official Redfall Twitter Banner

The banner for the official Redfall Twitter account is accidentally taken down following a wave of recent copyright takedowns.

It's back now, though. But pretty damn funny.

Fake chimneys are very very very common on new houses. New subdivision are filled with them.

DF analysis of the PC version:

- Traversal Stutter Struggle again and you can't do anything about it, no matter the hardware.
- Incredibly bare bones graphical options menu.
- Only the default UE4 options, which aren't good, generic and change multiple things which aren't explained or wanted.
- Lowest volumetric lighting option is just hideous.
- Great AA and image reconstruction options.
- But there are issues with sparkling, bloom and some lighting delay issues.
- Game is under-utilizing GPU and CPU in a significant way.
- CPU core utilization is fucked like in Jedi Survivor. With very little difference when disabling cores, more active cores even reduce performance.

Performance comparison when disabling cores. Cyberpunk has good CPU usage and actually scales with more CPU power. While the other games even have lower performance when the full power of the CPU is unlocked.

2023-05-05_20h09_52agd7c.png

- On midrange CPUs, frame rates fluctuate like crazy and frame times are fucked, leading to a stutter that can't be fixed by using VRR.
- Even on the lowest settings, a midrange CPU like the Ryzen 3600 drop from 60 to 30 fps when traversing (3080 GPU).
- Game looks like utter shit at lowest settings, going to high can't even maintain 30fps.
- Highest settings look like lowest settings in other games at times.
- Shadows even on highest settings are fugly, totally bad. Worse than other games 15 years ago.
- Shadows disappear when you look at them lol
- Generally, looks bad, performs bad.

Harvey Smith was always a shitlib. That piece of crap Blacksite: Area 51 released many years ago was basically his anti-Bush screed masquerading as a (pre-Alpha) game. Dishonored 2 had input from Anita Sarkeesian.

Do they also just plop a chimney stack right on top of the roofing material? Or do they actually build it out so the water won't pool and leak into the domicile during a rain?
It's pretty close to just plopping a fake chimney on the roof. The roof is shingled so it just drains from the downslope.
Edit
Oh there are fake chimneys that are built and actually part of the roof structure as well.

Played a bit on Game Pass and it's every bit as bad as people say it is. Graphics look like shit, animations look like shit, bugs everywhere, the dialogue is cringe, and the loot system is dull as hell. I also hate this randomized bullshit since if I want a particular gun, I have to pray to the RNG Gods to get it. Hell, I even found an exploit to get guaranteed Legendary guns and I still had to do that several times before I got the exact guns I wanted.

I contrast that with a game like Shadow Warrior 2 where the gems are all completely random but the weapons aren't so I can stick with my ultra fancy cyber katana and dual Desert Eagles that fire explosive bullets even as I'm upgrading damage.

I honestly think this game is not getting nuked hard enough.

I have never seen a product that is so disjointed from a design doc standard. None of the systems work well or together in anyway. This is a literal collection of ideas with focus tested mechanics that are popular with certain segments of the audience. Its not even a polished Alpha.

"Redfall is an open-world, single player and co-op FPS from Arkane Austin, the award-winning team behind Prey and Dishonored. Continuing Arkane's legacy of carefully crafted worlds and immersive sims, Redfall brings the studio's signature gameplay to this story-driven action shooter."

That is a literal fucking lie.

I also want to lament the big hole in the entire game market for a Borderlands Killer. How Gearbox has dominated this space with their terrible story writing and somehow making each subsequent game worse than the previous, while simultaneously making the gun action, movement and skill mechanics better is quite a feat.

I couldn't get on board the Destiny train after slogging through Destiny 1 and I never got into the Division, though I hear D2 is not too bad. But putting a Looter Shooter Diabloesque FPS to market should be pretty easy since Gearbox was able to pull it off. Hell, one could crib all that makes Borderland great and addicting and spend the real money to get great writers and imaginative designers to make a killer FPS Shlooter. Gearbox can't even crib from themselves correctly as Tiny Tina's Wonderland shows.

Perhaps DEI is so cancerous, companies are not allowed to hire competent devs or make a game that will actually be good?

Borderlands 1 is my favorite by far

I've been playing it and I'm going beat it before turning it off for good.

The gaming industry should phrase the term "Redfall" with a meaning of something like a quick drop off of active players after a new release. Or something like that. Some disastrous shit.

At least with Titanfall 1, it had a pretty good online group even if the initial release was lacking. Redfall is definitely charting new territory for bombing.

According to the guy with the ugly wife, "By the end of Redfall's development, roughly 70% of the Austin staff who had worked on Prey would no longer be at the company."

He says that no one at the company even wanted to work on Redfall and started fleeing the ship.

He also says that they wanted Microsoft to cancel the game completely but they canceled only the PS5 version that was in the works (Microsoft is the good guy who wants everyone everywhere to experience games, btw).

Pretends to be shocked. Goes along with many issues I talked about in the other thread. We are in an era of transition and chasing ideas for more monetization rather than creativity.

I always just assume game devs/publishers CEO's give literal zero shit about the actual games or their message, just the money.

It's getting increasingly clear that past successes are no longer any guarantee of a studio's next game being good.

Especially in the AAA space, staff turn over and sheer numbers making individual contributions irrelevant mean every game is basically completely divorced from what came before.

If we're lucky, the management is competent and has a clear vision that translates into a good game. But most likely the hundreds of devs in multiple different countries just bodge together something that might meet a committee meetings vague set of marketting approved goals.
