Thread: Playstation VR2 First Impressions and Gameplay (UPDATE: won’t be backwards compatible with PSVR, Sony confirms)
I'm in day 1. My first and only experience with vr was oculus dk2 in 2014. It blew my frigging mind. Buying a PC and headset is too rich for my tastes.

All I want is PSVR2 Cs:s office 24/7 and ill happily die of starvation inside that headset.

The sense of scale in vr cannot be conveyed through a video. Neither can the absolute sheer fucking terror of being stood in a corridor with a heat monitor beeping away, trying to work out where the xenomorphs are.

Looks dope, but that wire placement still baffles me. Watching these people have two cables (one HUD, One Headphone) coming down along their neck and laying on their collar bone looks like its awful. And that one Asian girl has it resting ON her left arm?! That has to destroy immersion. The ones who seem to tuck it over their should, it doesnt look too bad. WHY is it not farther back to where it obviously goes down your back? They concerned about the wire on the back when sitting to be more of an immersion killer?

Oh well, cannot wait to play with it first hand.

How are these things if you wear glasses? I've always been curious about vr but have never tried it.

I wear glasses in all my vr sessions with no issues.

Well shit I guess it's time to get a ps5. This and the additional quests on the Harry Potter game have sold me.

I love VR. Have an index. Happy more people will get to experience good VR.
The pc mod community has been killing it with VR porting a bunch of non vr games to VR with great results. Hl2 vr comes out tomorrow in fact. This desperately needs to happen with pretty much every first person shooter on ps5. Sony has mentioned wanting hybrid games. The only one we have seen so far is resident evil village.

I don't know why but I have a feeling modded re8 on PC is still gonna be the best way to play re8 in VR. I am pumped for hl2. Gonna give it a go on the weekend.

Speaking on the PlayStation Blog podcast, SVP of Platform Experience, Hideaki Nishino said that "PSVR games are not compatible with PSVR 2 because PSVR 2 is designed to deliver a truly next-generation VR experience."

"PSVR 2 has much more advanced features like all new controllers with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers and inside-out tracking, eye tracking in the headset, 3D audio all coming together of course. So this means developing PSVR 2 requires a whole different approach from the original PSVR."

Ouch. That really sucks. You'd think Sony would learn that backwards compatibility is something important in this day and age.

When competing with Oculus and other PC based VR headsets that's a huge negative for PSVR2.

Not backwards compatible? Ouch that sucks. And is surprising to me. Especially because VR games are often rather pricey for what they offer.

Good. New hardware, new generation, new games.

I don't like how everything has to launch on everything nowadays. Halo infinite should have been xsx only. Same with horizon and GoW on ps4.

I've bought those games and console already. Move on, give me something new.

Clear the slate for new VR experiences.

Psvr games would look like crap on this new headset. Devs I'm sure can easily port their games to psvr 2.

Not being backwards compatible with everything released on PSVR isn't a big deal for me. Why would it even have that capability? It's a completely different tech so an odd stick to beat Sony with to be honest.

Anything significant that's worth it, like Astro Bot, will likely get a port anyway.

I had made the no BC assumption forever ago. Every game has to be specifically changed to run with the new tracking is my guess. Hell, I'm sure even just letting the old game run at a higher resolution and/or a higher framerate would require a patch.

I'm just hoping a lot of these devs bother to patch their game to run on VR2 without charging for a "new version." But when it comes to VR, the teams are mostly small and so are the budgets. I'm not holding my breath for a ton of patched VR1 games.

As much as I enjoyed my 1 1/2 years with PSVR before selling it to someone who wanted it more, the thing was a tech demo. I'd rather they start fresh with a new platform than to shackle it to old VR games. The good ones will be upgraded/updated/Remastered anyway so I doubt it will be some tragic loss of 100s of VR games

Sony Interactive Entertainment has released a new trailer for PlayStation VR2 dubbed "Feel a New Real."

Here is an overview of the hardware, via its official website:

The Next Generation of Virtual Reality Gaming

Experience new sensations with stunning 4K HDR visuals, ground-breaking new controllers and genre-defining games, all made possible by the power of PlayStation 5.
Explore New Realities with the PlayStation VR2 Headset
Thrilling new worlds come to life with incredible visual clarity and in uniquely immersive and emotional ways with PlayStation VR2 Sense technology.
  • 4K HDR Display – Experience breath-taking virtual reality environments in clear focus with 4K High Dynamic Range visuals and up to 120fps1, as two 2000 x 2040 OLED displays deliver over four times the resolution generated by the original PlayStation VR headset.
  • Enhanced Comfort – Enjoy comfortable play sessions through a vast 110-degree field of view and a light, well-balanced Fresnel lens. The lens adjustment dial allows you to customize spacing between lenses to match your eye position for an optimal onscreen image. The headset also includes a vent that allows airflow to the lenses, reduces fogging and enhances player comfort.
  • Eye Tracking – Interact in new and lifelike ways, as the PlayStation VR2 headset detects the motion of your eyes1, allowing for heightened emotional response and enhanced expression when meeting fellow players online. Eye tracking cameras follow your line of sight when aiming or looking around, while advanced foveated rendering techniques improve the visual experience by adjusting resolutions to pinpoint and enhance whatever you're focusing on.
  • Inside-Out Tracking – Play with freedom as PlayStation VR2 tracks you and your controllers through four cameras embedded in the headset. Your movements and the direction you look are reflected in-game without the need for an external camera.
  • Headset Feedback – Feel subtle, responsive headset vibrations at key moments during gameplay1. Created by a single built-in motor, these vibrations add an intelligent tactile element to the sensory immersion experienced as you play. Detect your character's elevated pulse during tense moments, the rush of objects passing close to your head, or the thrust of your vehicle as you speed forward.
  • Tempest 3D AudioTech – Surround yourself with incredibly realistic soundscapes1, as in-game audio dynamically adapts to your position and head movements1. Sense a character's presence as they whisper in your ear, locate friends and enemies by their gunfire or footfall, and experience the creeping dread of a threat approaching from any direction.
  • Single-Cable Connection – Jump straight into new virtual worlds with a simple one-cable connection to the PlayStation 5 console's front USB port. PlayStation VR2 is quick and easy to set up—just plug in and play.
Introducing the PlayStation VR2 Sense Controller
Interact with virtual worlds in amazing new ways with haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, precision tracking and finger touch detection1 – all integrated into a unique ergonomic design.
  • Orb Design – Take hold of the intuitive new PlayStation VR2 Sense controller and experience freedom of movement and a realistic, natural gaming experience through a well-balanced and ergonomic design, leaving you to focus on comfortably exploring the game world you're in.
  • Analog Sticks and Buttons – Take additional control of your in-game actions and gear with traditional analog sticks and action buttons split across two controllers, along with an Options button and a Create button. As well as the adaptive triggers, both controllers also feature a 'grip' button to grab in-game objects.
  • Finger Touch Detection – Interact with in-game items and environments naturally, even when you're not actively pressing a button as finger touch detection1 allows the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller to replicate natural motions and gestures, letting you reach out and touch the virtual world.
  • Haptic Feedback – Feel realistic, detailed responses to your in-game actions1. From subtle, precise vibrations to intense pulses, a vast range of sensations in the game world can be delivered to your hands. Sense how it feels to fire or strike with different weapons, craft tools, touch varied environmental textures and travel across undulating terrain.
  • Adaptive Triggers – Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments1. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring, to crushing objects with your hands or feeling a weapon jam in the heat of combat, adaptive triggers physically connect you to your on-screen actions for a deep sense of
PlayStation VR2 Sense Technology
Enjoy heightened sensory and emotional experiences as PlayStation VR2 Sense technology1 combines eye tracking, headset feedback, 3D Audio and the new, intuitive PlayStation VR2 Sense controller to create an incredibly deep feeling of immersion.
  • Headset feedback
  • Adaptive triggers
  • Haptic feedback
  • Finger touch detection
  • Eye tracking
  • Tempest 3D AudioTech
PlayStation VR2 is due out in early 2023.

the confirmation of foveated rendering is expected but very appreciated. The "rumble" (??) in the headset seems like that could be really cool.

Yeah for Sony to crack eye-tracked foveated rendering in a (hopefully) affordable consumer VR kit is so fucking great.

It's hard not to get hyped about this thing. If it was just PSVR with better tracking and a higher resolution and playing PS5 games, then that's already a huge upgrade to VR1.

But you add in the foveated rendering and haptics and it's like god damn what are the good devs gonna do with this thing??

seems like a VR platform that's actually built to last a few years in the market unlike PS VR1. The trio of foveated rendering, 4k display, and eye-tracking (setting aside other cool features) will ensure the hardware is still putting out relevant and pretty games for many years.

4k screen and hdr? Meta told me hdr was years away.

I'm psyched for this headset, it's going to be a beast on its own. Then think that's its powered by a single architecture, specifically designed for VR, with software to boot. Bloody Nora its going be fun.

The first online FPS that nails a fun experience, will win the mainstream over. Man I can't wait to try skyrim and destiny (and whatever else there is) in psvr2.

The only thing that is missing is some sort of wigig 2 wireless solution and maybe pancake lenses instead of these custom fresnel lenses in order to get a smaller form factor. They did seem to at least partially solve the godray/glare problems that plague fresnel, so that's very encouraging too.

Honestly though I predominantly play seated and if I do play standing it's not in a massive play area. Sometimes i'll go into the garage to play in a large space, but that's rare. The wire I just don't thin will be a big deal; especially since it's one cable.

Roomscale is fun in certain games but it has problems with changes in elevation like going up or down stairs. If you try manually walking it you will go through the stairs or float above the stairs. Since I have a quest 2 and play it quite a bit and a ps5 as well. this is an easy purchase for me.

I think Meta is correct. The early reports are that the HDR really isn't very bright. You have to use black frame insertion in VR in order to increase the motion resolution which significantly reduces the brightness. So it sounds like technically it's receiving an HDR feed, but it probably doesn't go over 300 nits. It will have the expanded color range of HDR. but that's not very noticeable in comparison to the large range of luminosity HDR provides.

"While Sony says PSVR 2 has an 'HDR display' (a fairly ill-defined term), they haven't specified the max brightness of the headset. In my time with it there weren't many moments where I felt like HDR was making an obvious difference; this level of 'HDR' may just feel a bit more like expanded contrast compared to high-end HDR-capable TVs and phones where the effect is plainly visible."

Sony Interactive Entertainment plans to manufacture two million PlayStation VR2 headset units by March 2023, according to a Bloomberg report citing "people familiar with the matter."
Mass production reportedly began in September and has yet to face supply chain constraints, though the production figure could be adjusted depending on the device's sales momentum following its launch in early 2023.

According to the report, Sony Interactive Entertainment's current plan to launch the headset in early 2023 coincides with expected relief of the supply chain bottlenecks that have hampered availability of PlayStation 5 since its launch in late 2020, which would give the company sufficient inventory of both headsets and consoles for a big marketing push.

When contacted by Bloomberg, a spokesperson for Sony Interactive Entertainment declined to comment.

I really hope it's easy to get for those of us who actually want one. Maybe Sony will do those invites again like they did for PS5 but with even more units. And hopefully they send the first invites out to people with X number of hours of VR games played.

These will sell out in no time. Fingers crossed I can get my hands on one.

And we haven't even had a proper Sony showcase or VR SoP. Apparently 20 launch titles.
