Do I get anything for playing mercenaries

You get CP points you can use to unlock new weapons and infinite ammo for the weapons. You can also use them to buy extra content like a handful of videos, figurines and concept art.

You also get CP points for completing challenges so you don't need to play mercenaries if you don't want to.
I have not played mercenaries yet in re8. To be honest, I nevr liked mercenaries much in the older games so I am in no rush to play it, if ever, in re8.

I think Hardcore is definitely worth a playthrough. Feels like the better difficulty setting, to be honest.

The second half is weaker but still over all a good game IMO.

Yes, a bit, I would say. 8 is more shooty, whereas 7 is more hide and seek.
