Open-World RPG Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon launches for Steam Early Access in Q4 2022

Awaken Realms Digital has announced that open-world RPG Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon will launch for Steam Early Access in Q4 2022.

Tainted Grail is something of an interesting case. A different, roguelike title - Tainted Grail: Conquest - was released in May 2021. Tainted Grail: Conquest was originally built as a separate game mode for The Fall of Avalon, serving as a testing environment for the developers. However, it soon became a full game of its own. More details from the developers can be found in the Steam forum thread.

The world of Tainted Grail is a gritty, dark reimagination of Arthurian legends — an epic dark fantasy setting in which humans arrived at the cursed island of Avalon in search of paradise, only to find a hellish land tainted by the Wyrdness — a mysterious force warping the reality in a chaotic manner.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is an open-world RPG full of complex quests in which your decisions matter and your choices are respected. A vast world full of monsters, fallen heroes, and exciting places to discover. It will offer a dark storyline that will require players to balance the shades of gray and no good answers — paired with great freedom granted to the player and plenty of possible choices.
King Arthur is dead and all the myths and legends are falling – humans living at Avalon are desperately trying to find new ways of life and things to believe in. The plague of Red Death and the spreading of the Wyrdness are not helping. The time is running out and multiple factions have their own plan for the future of the island…

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a reimagination of the board game published under the same name. It was the most successful Kickstarter campaign of 2018 — funded at over $6,2M — and the game is held in high regard by the board gaming community (currently at the 80th place of best board games of all time as voted by the community of Board Game Geek).

Skyrim style RPG Tainted Grail is finally coming to Steam 1.0 with a big feature

Taking from Oblivion, Skyrim, and the best fantasy RPGs around, Tainted Grail is finally launching in Steam 1.0 very soon, with a big extra.

We're in a golden age of fantasy RPGs right now. Oblivion Remastered brings back the 2006 classic for a new age. Baldur's Gate 3 brought CRPGs into to the limelight. Elden Ring proved that Fromsoftware's penchant for challenge has a place in open worlds. There are so many types of fantasy experiences around today that no two are completely alike, giving you more than enough reason to get stuck in. Now, inspired by Skyrim and Oblivion, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is about to join these ranks, as it edges closer to a full 1.0 launch.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a fantasy RPG in the truest sense. After stepping into a world of Arthurian legend stuck in an everlasting autumn, you need to choose how you'll leave your mark on the land. You can explore, talk to myriad NPCs, choose your playstyle, and complete a wide range of quests that'll eventually dictate what legacy King Arthur's reign will leave on the land, after 600 years of struggle.

If you've played Skyrim, Oblivion, Avowed, or any number of role-playing games dictated by choice, you'll feel right at home with Tainted Grail. You can engage in alchemy, cooking, mining, farming, house management, and even fishing – what good would a fantasy world be without fishing? Developer Questline has been steadily improving Tainted Grail since its early-access launch in 2023, but it's about to finally take the leap to 1.0.

When Tainted Grail leaves Steam Early Access, you'll be given everything the game has to offer. That means three different regions to explore, up to 70 hours of gameplay, a branching main story, over 200 side quests and more than 250 NPCs, dungeons, weapons, and a whole lot more. This will be the complete experience, but with one more bonus for new and returning players.

Questline confirms that Tainted Grail 1.0 will come with a fully functional third-person mode. This new perspective will be "far from perfect" at launch, but it'll provide you with a new way of playing at the very least. Questline says it wanted to add the perspective as an accessibility feature, and I love it. As someone who constantly swaps between perspectives in the open worlds of Skyrim and Oblivion, I'll be taking Tainted Grail's third-person mode for a spin for sure.

Questline confirms that the Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon 1.0 release date is set for Friday May 23. You can buy the Steam Early Access version or play the free demo right here.
