Thread: Old media you're enjoying because most current media is crap

Have you ever heard of Sturgeon's Law? Noted scifi writer Theodore Sturgeon stated this in his defense of science fiction: "90 percent of science fiction is indeed crap, but then again 90 percent of everything is crap."

It seems that old adage is proving more true nowadays, what with entertainment media being infected by woke SJW content now more than ever. That's not to say there aren't any good media out there right now, but you'd have to sift through a proverbial pile of trash to find it.

Why not instead, enjoy some old media from yesteryear that has stood the test of time? And is certainly to provide more entertainment than what is on offer today. For me, of late I've been enjoying:

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (TV series 1984-1994) - There've been a ton of actors who've played Sherlock Holmes. But none of them for me have ever matched Jeremy Brett's portrayal of the character in the ITV Granada adaptation of the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories. Alongside Brett is the equally excellent David Burke as Watson, though Burke would leave the series after season 2 and be replaced by Edward Hardwicke from season 3 onwards.

Not to say that any recent Sherlock Holmes media is crap. The two films starring Robert Downey Jr. were enjoyable and CBS' Elementary was a consistent weekly delight (BBC's Sherlock sucks balls though). But none of them can hold a candle to the Granada series for me, which hasn't dated one bit and is still enjoyable to watch today.

So what old media are you all enjoying in these weird times?

Watched this masterpiece again last night because I couldn't stop thinking about how AWFUL the Amazon Without Remorse movie turned out to be.

Such as badass movie and still the best adaptation of Tom Clancy's work. It's a shame Alec Baldwin didn't reprise the role of Jack Ryan in further movies. I think he's the best portrayal of the character, even over Harrison Ford.

It just never gets old. Immensely offensive in today's (western) world, which makes it all the more enjoyable, imo.

Fat lady: HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT TO MY FACE!
Al: I would say it behind your back but my car only has half a tank of gas!
I just realized there's another old sitcom that I've been enjoying recently that wouldn't fly today.

I think this episode alone would start a shitstorm these days

I guess I have done a lot of rewatches in the last year or so. Movies and TV.

One of the movies I rewatched recently was Bronson. A movie starring Tom Hardy and done by the guy who made Drive and Only God Forgives. It's very well done visually and thematically and is just a fun story about Britain's "most famous prisoner."

I've given up on most modern books as well, particularly SciFi and Fantasy. All of them seem to be infested with wokeness.

That said, if anyone has any suggestions for non-woke, modern, sciFi and fantasy books, please share them.

Look into Gene Wolfe. Start with The Knight if you like fantasy, or Fifth Head of Cerberus if you like scifi

Freaks & Geeks is one of those kinda 'older' shows for me.

Watched Footloose a few weeks ago. Makes you miss those times. Shocked to see the boyfriend beat the shit out of the main girl.

I have those 24/7 channels on my IPTV so I will just put it on as background.

Went through some old Survivor for a while. Did Trailer Park Boys. First few seasons of that is amazing stuff some of the best comedy out there. Dives off a cliff when it goes to Netflix. Always watch South Park.

Started to watch all the Jersey Shores. Ya guilty pleasure but its actually a pretty fun show and throw back.

Which then lead me to watching Geordie Shore the british version. And wow culture shock if you stick with it.

It actually kind of shows how far we have come. The first season was full of buff dudes who want to bang. All the dudes are scoring chicks and banging.

Then I all of a sudden jumped a whole few seasons to more modern times and now the house has a gay guy, another dude who looks totally gay, some freak guy with tats all over his body, and a tranner named NAT. None of the dudes try to bang anyone at the clubs or anything because that would be misgoynst or whatever. You can see the culture shift from 2011 to now when you compare the first season or 2 with the last few seasons.

This is almost 100% of what I watch today... I have given up on modern movies and TV. I get my DVD movies mailed to me through netflix or I buy stuff on amazon..

a few hold outs like The Boys and Invincible.
The Boys was very good but there were some seriously cringe inducing scenes in the second season....

Like when Homelander and the Nazi chick are talking about SJWs. Yeah I get it, they're supposed to be like Trump herp derp.

Overall though I really liked it.

Probably anything by Orson Scott Card. He's a Mormon Conservative sci-fi writer. In fact he made a book that's slowly becoming reality called Empire about a civil war between the Left and Right. It's sci-fi because people are fighting in mech suits and whatnot and the video game Shadow Complex is a canon spin off of the novel. Old GAF actually tried to boycott the game as a result.

I like Card, but he's actually not that conservative. He's just anti-homosexuality so he gets labeled as right-wing. He's definitely closer to a Mitt Romney conservative than a Trump Conservative.

Brandon Sanderson is another one. He gets labeled as conservative but I'm pretty sure he's on record as supporting Bernie Sanders. He's just able to keep his personal politics out of his writing so it's still enjoyable. Reading "Way of Kings" now and really liking it.

On the other end of the spectrum is Dan Simmons. He used to be a lefty but got red-pilled HARD and is definitely a conservative now. All of his stuff is good, even the stuff he wrote before being red-pilled.

I read a lot of horror and the woke-ness is definitely catching up to the genre. I find myself going back and reading authors from the 80s like Richard Laymon and Jack Ketchum, both of which would have been considered lefties in the 80s but their work is anti-wokeness personified.

Currently rewatching Hercules The Legendary Journeys.
Hercules is such an underrated show. I certainly like it more than it's more popular spinoff Xena: Warrior Princess.

In Xena's favor though, it has Renee O'Connor as Gabriel.:love::love:

I know of Card and his work. But the only thing I've read of him were the few issues of Ultimate Iron Man, which was CRAP.

Didn't know he worked on Marvel comics.

Surprised they let a conservative even touch their books in the first place.

Then again the former Marvel CEO was a big Trump donater.

Planet of the Apes (1968).

It smokes any current movie. It was already old when I was born and it's still as enjoyable as ever.

This was in 2005, way before the Disney buyout and their current woke direction.

Marvel has had conservatives work for it before, like Chuck Dixon.

Ender's Game is great and so are most of it's sequels. Those are the only things I've read by Card.

Also, I would assume that J.K. Rowling read Ender's Game before writing Harry Potter. Just too many similarities, but Ender's Game is 100 times better.

J.K. Rowling straight out ripped off the 1986 movie Troll.

It's a horror/fantasy about a fairy tale world where a Troll arrives from into our world. The main character is a kid by the name.... get ready for this.... Harry Potter.

Hercules manages to be a show full of T&A while remaining wholesome. Most plots are hot sexy babe special guest star, villagers in town need help, Hercules comes to help, the ladies fawn, Hercules beats the baddy and tells the girls "sorry still love my dead wife". And then randomly he'll say how he hates slavery and war.

Show is based.

My favorite bit is when they had Corrinna Everson on early on in complete boob armor.

latest

Hercules gets roughed up in a fight so she decides to help him home and they both turn away from the camera to walk away, with her whole asscheeks in view in these assless metal thong armor.

And her line is: "I'm helping you home, no butts about it."

I have such blurred visions of Hercules/Xena from my childhood, much like I did Buffy for the longest time. I feel the same way about that Dean Cain Superman show

Those shows always remind me of being like 5 years old in Detroit and just chilling the most. I'm happy to hear they hold up

Whoa! I watched that movie when I was a kid, but did not remember the character's name was Harry Potter. That is fucking nuts.

We've been watching James Bond movies (Sean Connery, now on Roger Moore). Just started watching a TV show called Black Sails which is pretty good so far. Otherwise we have watched musicals like Amadeus, The King and I, and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

Been on a bit of a comedy binge of late with rewatching Friends and Parks and Rec. I might actually get around to finally watching the American version of The Office as well. I kind of find Ricky Gervais intolerable and so sort of avoided it by default through association (couldn't stand the UK original at all and noped out after about 10 minutes), but everyone seems to love it so I figure I should at least give it a go, as I enjoy Parks & Rec.

The Office is definitely much better than Parks and Rec IMO. Though, I skipped the first season when I did my re-watch. It was still trying to be the "American version of the UK show" so hard during that first season. It just didn't know what it wanted to be yet. It even copied parts of the UK show verbatim.

But it grew into its own thing and far, far surpassed what it was originally copying. It gets pretty horrible in later seasons and some episodes are huge duds, but I'd be shocked if you didn't like it after liking Parks.

I just didn't get the office at all. I tried watching a few episodes but I just didn't feel anything for it. Comedies after around 2005 seem too stale for my taste, although the middle was sort of interesting. Perhaps it is more to do with the actors then just the show, I don't think I've seen too many movies with Steve Carrell but I have seen a few things with Neil Flynn (the janitor from Scrubs and dad in the Middle).

We've been watching an assload of John Wayne and Elvis movies lately. Mostly Elvis because my daughter really likes them for some reason, whenever we put on a movie on weekends she always asks for either Viva Las Vegas or Clambake. I dig them because they're really chill movies, it's always just Elvis somewhere cool, singing songs and picking up chicks, and maybe there's a race or something at the end.

I've watched both versions of The Office, and the UK version is by far superior in terms of writing and comedy.

But at that same time, that's what makes it unwatchable for me. The show is so cringe inducing and it makes you feel so embarrassed for the character of David Brent played by Gervais. I found the US version much more watchable in that sense in that it doesn't take itself too seriously. Steve Carrell is obviously playing a clown compared to Gervais who is a sad middle aged office manager trying to make himself look cool and failing miserably.

That's mainly the kicker for me. I didn't find the UK Office funny, I just found it sad. Probably as a result of having done a bit of time in one of those sorts of places for a while. Things that are more clearly comedies like Parks sit much better with me.
