Nintendo published a presentation material slideshow for its financial report on the first half of the fiscal year ending March 2022. On the 41st page, Nintendo teased its next new game console set to succeed the Switch in the future.

Nintendo expects its new game console to continue its integrated hardware-software product concept. The company has been working on the concept since earlier consoles like the Nintendo DS and Wii. However, it saw the Switch as a new starting point to expand the company's IPs and value-added services.

The page also shows that Nintendo intends to make its next gaming system compatible with the Nintendo Accounts that people have set up on the Switch. The company wants to establish and maintain positive relationships with its customers in the long term. It plans to do so by continuing to provide content and services based on the accounts.

Nintendo's latest console released to date is the Nintendo Switch, available worldwide since 2017. It has sold 92.87 million units as of September 30, 2021. The number has yet to include the new OLED model, which came out more recently on October 8, 2021. Nintendo has not revealed more details about the Switch's successor console nor its launch window.

I'll be happy as long as they don't set back classic titles/virtual console again like they did from Wii U to Switch. They had Wii games, nintendo 64 games and even gameboy advance games on the Wii U virtual console but somehow they couldn't be arsed to move them across to the switch. I'm still waiting for a gameboy color/advance classic system/section of switch online.

Poor Wii U getting kicked out of Nintendo's history graphic.
I've said it before and Nintendo clearly agree with me, the WiiU did so badly that Nintendo had to start 8th gen over from scratch halfway through, and thus the Switch is there do-over console.

Also I've always held that we'd be getting a 9th gen system sooner rather than later too. There's just no reason to hold off so late into this gen as they did last.

Most of their big franchises have had at least one release, expected big sequels like Mario Kart 9 and the next 3D Mario, Xenoblade and Fire Emblem are all suspiciously absent, and there's already the Steam Deck coming that has roughly the power one would expect a 'Switch 2' would have at just £350, clearly showing the tech is there at a retail acceptable price point.

I expect we'll be seeing 'Switch 2' either late next year or early 2023. It's the international supply chain issues and chip shortages that are likely more of a hindrance to it's release date than anything.

And nintendo please bring up to par with the other console makers ffs. Just give us normal friend names and online (friend-) voicechat like we deserve in fucking 20XX.

No friend code shit and speaking via laptop next to you. We're not in 1985 dial up shit.

Good thing they want to expand on what they already have. People are tired of buying same shit each gen (but they still do lol)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure when they say 'expanding' and 'value-added services' they're referring to more of the NSO Expansion pass, where you pay twice as much just to get access to badly emulated N64 and Megadrive games.

Remember this is for investors, telling them how they're going to make bigger profits, not for their customers.

The emulation for the old games isn't that good either. Why should I pay more If I cannot access the whole n64 library.

But you're most probably right. I was just dreaming / complaining.

It will probably have all the GTA's on there by then. Just in time for GTA6's release in April 2031.
If the rumors that they restarted GTA6 are correct, it may be 2041 before we see it. With that said they will have sold 500 million copies of 5 by then, so it's not like it's a rush for them to release its successor.

To be serious, I think the real question is whether GTA6 or ES6 release first.

It's a shame - the cartridges are great imo.

I'm assuming it will be another home/portable hybrid, so I'm guessing they are moving to digital only.
I'm old and I'd like to have my stuff in physical form, or at the very least DRM free. That said... I'm inclined to agree.

Actually, physical or not doesn't matter that much anymore, and gets less important every generation. The best example is probably this generation's Animal Crossing: the physical version is a bare bones game. Not doing any math here but around 50- 75% of the content it has now was not in the base game. Staying physical to not lose any content when the game gets cut off from the support line isn't a plus for some physical releases anymore.

I can't imagine them dropping physical this gen. Way too many people still buy at retail and there are loads of markets they cater to where Internet infrastructure is either crap or getting worse as time goes on.

I can see them dripping it eventually, but they'd need to be offering both initially (like the PS5 this gen and likely going forward), and only ditching physical when it is well of 90% digital, and they can eat the loss of millions in revenue relatively easily compared to the bulk of their income.

I completely forgot about the PS5 and Xbox digital only consoles, released as a cheaper alternative to a console that can read physical media. Indeed it could be the time for Nintendo to try that kind of approach with their next hardware generation.

Also worth bearing in mind that despite the fact it's cheaper and easier to get ahold of, the XSS is selling far fewer units than the XSX, and Sony are producing significantly more of the Disc PS5 than the Digital.

Neither the market nor Sony's expectations (Xbox were rumoured to be expecting the XSS to be vastly more popular than the XSX) support the idea that all digital is possible yet. I just cannot see the ever Conservative and cautious Nintendo being the first to jump into it against all sense and evidence.

You aren't buying the retro games this time anyway. You are paying for them forever via subscription.

This is actually pretty awesome if it actually means I can play (most) of my digital Switch games on future console(s). That has been my biggest fear with the platform as Nintendo has a less than stellar on this front. The thought of not having to buy all the classics....yet again.
