Thread: Nintendo Employee Tells Fans To Stick With The Current Switch

Does it run any better? "Nope."
Nintendo has announced a new Switch and it has got owners of the older models wondering if it's time for an upgrade. The company is yet to make an official statement about this - and likely won't directly address it, but it has clarified the OLED model does not have a new CPU or a RAM upgrade. Apart from the improved screen, internal memory upgrade, and a few other minor differences, it's much the same as the current dock version model.

While we don't have a statement from Nintendo about whether or not the new system is "worth it" for existing owners, we do now have a comment from the manager of product marketing (and Treehouse rep) at Nintendo of America, JC Rodrigo, via social media. When asked by a fan if the new system ran any better, he responded with a simple "nope" and told them to stick with the current one, unless they were interested in the screen upgrade.

While it might seem obvious it's not much more than a screen upgrade at this point, it's still interesting to hear when it's coming directly from a Nintendo employee. In other words, there's no need to try and justify an upgrade, if you aren't taken by it. With JC's advice in consideration, do you think you'll be getting the new Switch OLED model?

Seems like lost revenue by not making a massive battery upgrade or small performance increase, maybe make undocked settings similar to docked

Rock and Roll is right, do respect the honesty

I'm sure people who spend their whole lives in business know when there is money to be made and when not. This upgrade is great for someone like me who plays mostly in handheld. I'm thinking of getting one if I can afford it.

yeah thats why the virtual boy and wii u came out. also why companies make retarded decisions that cost them big bucks all the time.

Kudos for the honesty. You'd expect spin from any employee for any company over something like this. Hope he doesn't get reprimanded for telling the truth.

Yep it's this kind of media reporting that makes companies only dare speak through PR. Even though this is concise and accurate, consumer friendly information. 😊

It's not that simple. Sometimes the company has a plan, sees an opportunity or wants to fill a niche but it doesn't pan out. Virtual Boy was a test, it wasn't supposed to be Nintendo's main horse in the race. It didn't work out but the cost of that experiment wasn't devastating. Wii U could have been something similar, an attempt to capitalize on an idea that seemed good at the time.

I think this move was borne of two simple, logical reasons:

1) The semiconductor shortage has screwed, nay, FUCKED Sony and Microsoft. Why would Nintendo want to jump into a market that they can't provide systems for? This is a stepping stone to a real Switch 2 or Switch Pro in '22 or '23 to my eyes. And by then you'll be able to actually walk into a store and buy one rather than dealing with all the stupid bullshit Sony and Microsoft have played by forcing sales online only catering to scalpers and leaving legit buyers who want one to keep and play games on in the cold.

2) Switch sales have not started to decline as far as I know, so they literally have no incentive to halve their base up by releasing a true next-gen Switch. It's not what we wanted, but there are a lot of people who haven't bought one of these yet who will get this new version I think.

The half step nature of things like the DSI and New 3DS didn't work out for them so I don't see why they would try it again with the Switch for that reason. As well as the fact the Switch is still selling very strongly.

While I think it would have been smart to simply drop the other two $50 and put the OLED out at the original $299 price point the Switch launched at its not like the momentum is gonna suddenly crater.

Sill thing its going to be a mariko situation. And bet the battery life is better too.

But ya if you want a performance bump you aint getting it from the OLED switch.

Sound logic. I do hope we see a true upgrade in '22 or '23. Preferably 6+ months after BOTW 2 so we dont get a gimped version on the OG Switch. Havent been following Nvidia mobile stuff for a bit, but do they have anything that could turn into the Switch 2 SoC? I know the big players have made some great improvements in performance (Qualcomm, Apple, Samsung, etc). Wonder if Nintendo will stick with Nvidia for a second gen (no one ever has historically)

I'd buy it if the battery was significantly better
dont know about significant, but didn't lite/mairko switch have like 20% better battery or something?

It wouldn't shock me if basically there is just a few upgraded parts and the switch gets a like 5-15% boost in speed/ram/battery. Nothing huge but just a little bit extra juice.

Overall its a big genius but very Nintendo like, to find a way to increase the price of the switch. I doubt the OLED screen is costing an arm and a leg for them, heck its probably cheaper than the LCD one in the switch.

Ya the newer model did have better B life than the original. And ya, it's def genius, they somehow straddled the line between pissing people off with a monsterous revision and giving an upgrade that the die-hards will still buy
