So I'm sure you'll have all seen the hype around Abba making a come-back, well there are two tracks currently available and one is... well it's not great, but the other is proper Abba. I'll let you guys decide which is which.

My wife actually got a bit (very, the bloody girl) emotional. They've always been her favourite band since she was a kid, but is young enough that this is the first time there's ever been any new music of theirs out. We're even going to a 'live' concert with those motion captured 'ABBAtars' in the OP, performing like it's a live show back in their prime.

Honestly, the entire thing is possibly the most wholesome thing to happen this year, and especially ironic given that they rose to popularity in the 70's as an antidote to the massive depression and socio-economic collapse brought about by left wing politics. How history echoes...

I think they're a little late for a comeback. 20 years ago would be fine. I don't like them sounding like Titanic grannies.

Looks like they need money and got a great offer.
They're actually all ridiculously loaded already, particularly after after Mamma Mia movies. The redhead has pretty much become a recluse, living comfortably on her own private island in Sweden. This is pretty much the first time she's had anything to do with the press for decades.

Also they've made sure not to appear as they look now, but hired Industrial Light and Magic to create de-aged holograms of themselves, that they motion captured, so you don't get grossed out.

Really, just from a technical point of view, this shit is fascinating. People really need to stop with the postmodern deconstructionist approach, that has ruined most modern media, with actual good news.

You mean talking shit about everything until nothings left that's cool and good and worth looking forward to anymore?
Yeah, and I have then had that 'where do you think you are?' Realisation after I wrote that.

I've only been awake an hour and I'm apparently not awake enough to have remembered that there's no point in hope, so I blame that.

Saying that, we really are a miserable barrel of cunts, that really aren't helping ourselves with how incredibly cynical we've all become, so we're all being fucktards in our own way.

Nope, I think you actually have a point.
I have been thinking about these things a lot over recent times as well, and I kind of miss the old times when I was able to just look forward to something and feel happy about it.

We have become so numb and cynical.

I just wonder, how much of this is my age showing and how much of this the direction into which society moves.

And seeing that this effect just gets worse over the years, how negative will the world be in around 20 years then?

Definitely an age thing. Tons of old grumpy man around, always been. Stuff just loses its magic. As young people, everything is new and exciting. Once you've seen most stuff, understand the mechanics of the world and motivations of human behavior, reality kicks in and hatefucks all the magical exciting feelings.

Aren't they like 80 years old?
In their 70s I believe. But if the music's good the music's good. Hell I'll be seeing the Manic Street Preachers at some point (gig postponed by Covid but hopefully next year) and the Pet Shop Boys (same) and they're fucking old but their music is so good that honestly it's worth it. Never seen PSB live before but I've seen the manics loads and they're great, they know how to work a crowd, they have a fantastic back catalogue, and the pit is excellent (though I'm possibly too old to sustain a mosh in the way I used to back in the day).

On the grumpiness - we are all too cynical, no doubt, and yes the state of the modern world has created that, but I think it's good to rejoice in good things when they happen - for you that might not be Abba, it might be a great game or a great movie or a great book, or a great song or album by a new or old band, but what matters is finding something to light your fire. We all need art, in all its forms, to make our lives worth living.
