Man I really loved the 360, that first year of its life I felt like every release was exciting and I played every single game that came out. It was a great time to be a gamer.

I bought 360 around 2011. JTAGed fat model, with one of the more reliable motherboards. Later bought Kinect for cheap too. Still have it, but doubt I'll ever use it again.
Cool system. My favorite memories are playing RDR (best game on the system) and getting Modern Warfare 3 one or two weeks before launch when iso leaked. Thought it was amazing and looked really good for a console game.

The console definitely had a very good and cool image. Insane how MS butchered the brand.

Seriously, why couldn't they just have carried forward its legacy instead of trying to force the Xbox One's TV-in system, or Kinect, or try to force always online so soon (when it naturally came to the industry anyway had they just waited a few years). So many crazy screwups that were just unneeded. Had they just concentrated on games and their competitive advantage when it came to their online infrastructure, they would have been fine.

The first few years of the 360 was so exciting. COD 2, Oblivion, Mass Effect, Bioshock 1, Saints Row, Gears of War. Good times. And I loved Xbox Live Arcade games like Marble Blast Ultra
The 360 was a great system. MS should keep it alive.
It would have been nice to have an updated 360, the same cpu/gpu just fast enough to run everything at 1080p/60fps + extra RAM. 360 Pro.

For a long time the biggest self ownage in gaming was sorta held to be Atari with ET and the videogame crash, definitely the Nintendo break with Sony, absolutely Sega moving to software only due to extremely bad timing and pricing with the Dreamcast being in same time window/market as GameCube, Xbox and the PS2 and simply being eclipsed despite actually being a underrated console with a underrated linup.
Now Microsoft has eclipsed them all with the stunning success of the Xbox and the Xbox 360 followed by their Xbox One reveal and literally just about every ensuing single colossal fuck up after fuck up spanning over a decade long car wreck in slow motion.
Microsoft instead of following up and upgrading a Generation Defining console with the 360, decided to break a working formula.

It had a lot of great software that's for sure, but I'm gonna be the negative one here and point out how most of the shit we hate about modern gaming was introduced and standardized by Microsoft and the Xbox 360. Every single thing we bitch about can be traced back here.

There's only ever been one true console war, and it happened in the 90s.
90s were a different time man. Console companies directly called each other out in TV commercials. Sega pushed Nintendo as the not cool company with the slow games for babies while they were the edgy company with the cooler characters and faster gameplay. Sony had Crash Bandicoot going to Nintendo headquarters and calling out Mario on TV.

Xblig had an endless amount of gems. I still need to make a thread for that.
Honestly my dream is for someone to hack a 360 for me and install all xblig games i think it's 3000 or so. Haven't found anyone to do it for me. If anyone can point me in right direction or can do it please let me know.

That is what Series X and One X do. One X I specifically bought to play 360 games at higher res/fps. I only got a few One games but I since bought a whole stack of 360 games I never got around to play for pennies.
It took MS a few years to really get into BC, but yes, it ended up being great.
Imagine though, if they released a 360 Pro in 2011 or 12. Upgraded CPU/GPU, 4GB RAM + a blu-ray drive. Xbox One doesn't come out until 2017 (with full 360 BC). It has a Ryzen CPU, whatever GPU that was in the One X, 16GB RAM plus a SSD.
I don't know if that would make the console world better or worse than it is now, but it would be different.
