Thread: Mortal Kombat - Thank You from NetherRealm (Celebrating 30 Years)
Oh that ending is interesting. I think we've got a total universe reset AGAIN on our hands.

Mortal Kombat 12 announcement is well over due, there hasn't been an unannounced NRS game for this long in its history.

I'm starting to wonder how long they'll be able to keep that franchise alive, come up with new ideas, change it up, evolve. It's one of the longest running franchises in the industry.

is there even a mortal kombat collection? that would be pretty cool right now. all the older games together

There was the Arcade Kollection on PS3 and 360 with 1, 2 and Ultimate.

All the female fighters will be troons and look like Goro in the new universe.

True but they are on a strong streak. MK 12 was the best one yet. It feels next gen compared to the upcoming Street Fighter 6 lol.

I don't have high hopes for it.

- Storywise they don't know what to do and the last one sucked
- I hope the Kombat Kids never come back, they were a mistake
- The influence from Injustice fucking sucks - stop with the background interactive stuff, distracting and boring af
- The super-hero esque soundtracks that ALSO FUCKING SUCK
- The guest appearances ALSO FUCKING SUCK
- The X-Ray type attacks were a cool novelty in MK9-2011 - let go of that shit
- I wish they had the balls to do what they did in Deadly Alliance in terms of overall feel and setting
- Boobs, we need boobs, motherfuckers

Like most MK fans I'm annoyed by the weird prudishness when it comes to titillation in the series in recent years, but ngl I have a bigger nitpick.

Is anyone else annoyed by the weird overdesigned ninja costumes? I miss the old plain cloth look. I feel like Scorpion and SubZero especially have a ton of unnecessary crap all over their costumes these days. I like the simple look with a few personalized touches to differentiate the ninjas.

Exactly. No way Ninjas would be flip-flying around the place with all that "armor" weighing them down.

Bring it back to basics like Ken and Ryu designs of Street Fighter.

I agree with that. They look like some Final Fantasy shit nowadays.

Another nitpick of mine is that, bar the gore, MK games feel like Injustice after they started with the Injustice concept. Too much epic superhero shit. It fucking sucks. Injustice is a cool concept but MK should be pseudo-oriental mumbo jumbo with fighting and some gore, not a stupid epic superhero game.

Eh we have had Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat (9) and now Mortal Kombat (12)? Not sure I believe that rumor.

This will be the third reboot?

They need to just keep going with a different story now. Mortal Kombat 11 was epic, not sure how they can top it for scale though... perhaps they should go into the multiverse... that can't possibly go wrong ;)

If it is a reboot of MK1, they have my interest. Don't like the direction the games have gone. Feels really convoluted at this point story-wise.

I just want the first two games from back in the day in this new engine, and with a decent AI to fight against, and not those horrible cheatbots.

Add UMK3 in there but hold the new engine.

Which really, I guess that would've been just the HD Remake that was talked about way back when. I'm still salty as hell that was shelved. OG MK > New MK.

For me the franchise ended with MK2.
Everything afterwards was a disappointment for me.

Erm that game is already out. Its called Mortal Kombat 9 😉

Yeah I mean, you're not wrong but they added all that weird timeline stuff in there and did like an amalgamation of 1-3 if I remember correctly. It's been years since I played it though.

Just a straight reboot/remake of MK1 would be interesting for me.

It did play through the events of 1-3 with a twist in the final act. A remake of 1 sounds good but this would be the third time. Also having about 8 characters by today's standards and a really small scope would be a tough sell IMO.

A soft reboot would be my preferred stance. Maybe a familiar few faces in a totally new tournament/location.

I don't give a shit about all the story/timeline stuff. The actual fighting in MK11 is fantastic.

The missing ingredient is Tobias. He had all the good ideas. Boon is a hack and all the good stuff he does is rehashing what Tobias built in terms of characters. None of his new characters are memorable.

To be fair alot of the "kombat kids" were miles better in 11 than 10. I remember someone saying a while back that stuck with me that if they only give characters one game to be the finished product, then you can never iterate and improve. Cassie Cage, Dovorah, Kotal, and Jacqui are all essential now IMO.

As much as we like the old characters a fair few were pallet swaps with similar moves.

The only one I kinda like is Kotal and the whole Osh-Tekk (Aztec) is some shitty pun. lol

Unless it's a hard reboot, the story mode for the Aftermath dlc had Lui Kang going all the way back in time to train the original Kung Lao for what will be the very first MK tourney. So it would be a full on start from the beginning and not a remake of the events of the first MK videogame. Or they might use that as the backing for completely redoing the timeline and having legacy characters mysteriously sex and race swapped.

Course MK11 threw the ending of MKX in the trash within like 10 minutes so one can't say for sure. =S

MK9 isn't a reboot or a remake. It's a direct continuation of Armageddon. Raiden just uses his powers to try and change the outcome but winds up making shit worse. An actual reboot/remake wouldn't acknowledge the original series at all. I suppose the argument could be made that it's a soft reboot in a way, but I think that would be a bit disingenuous.

No they weren't. Cassie literally lost her whole personality and became diet Sonya. Jaqcui is boring as fuck, and Takeda and Jung Jin are totally MIA. They barely have any effect on the plot of 11. Kotal is treated as important, but the dude is so damn dull. He's a charisma vacuum, and only seems to be present to job to everyone.

Cassie especially was way better in MKX.

I don't see how. If you ask the majority of MK fans, these characters are an afterthought, no one's favorites. The most successful of the new cast is Erron Black.

As much as we like the old characters a fair few were pallet swaps with similar moves.

This stopped being true in MK9.
