Thread: Metaphor: ReFantazio Reviews Thread
I don't have experience with the Japanese version of P4 but the messaging in the Western version definitely felt as though it was alluding to Kanji going through some shit and dealing with fears of being gay. Especially with all the buff bathhouse dudes.

You're telling me he's not gay?

Was Naoto a dude?

Kanji was questioning himself for sure with his tough guy exterior, but it was as much a part of him as his softer side. That dissonance is what went out of control to create his dungeon and shadow.

A lot of lefty fans assume he is just gay. Persona 4 is about accepting yourself as not just the kernel of insecurities but the mask as well.

You know what makes Kanji cool as fuck? Not only does he put salt on watermelon, HE CARRIES HIS OWN SALT!

Naoto is a weird one because of the androgyny. I think she's even refered to as an "intelligent boy" or something in Persona Q. There's never anything explicitly said about her in that regard though.

Yeah, for Kanji having doubts, I always took it to be the classic sort of bully who can't accept who he is and therefore pushes everyone away. I like that the series always left it up to the player to decide though, again, much like Naoto there's nothing definitive. Kanji is just a cool guy to me, I don't really care if he's gay but they did his whole character arc well enough to have me invested in him.

I think the whole "intelligent boy" thing was a twofold misdirection. For one, the sake of the red herring / reveal that omg it's a girl, and two that she was this great kid detective that wouldn't be taken seriously as a girl (therefore pretending to be a boy) as part of Japans culture.

I very much agree, that even plays a role in Kanji's sexuality stuff because I don't believe Naoto was outed as a girl when it's speculated that he likes her.

There was a scene where Naoto (still presented as the Detective Prince) was finishing interviewing Kanji (after some previous interviews) while the IT party watches. Naoto walks away and Kanji starts talking to himself about being unsure how he feels about Naoto, partly because he thinks misunderstands the interviews as Naoto being interested in him. Then he realizes the party is there and goes into delinquent mode.

Obviously Kanji is attracted to Naoto here, but is it necessarily because he is gay? People can pick subconsciously up on whether someone is male or female, especially when without the detective outfit Naoto is the most curvaceous of the IT girls. Kanji may not have known Naoto was not a boy, but his brain did /plinkett. I think he was already just insecure over his "feminine" interests ("I just like cute things, okay? Got a problem with that!") and that got sent into overdrive with Naoto "flirting" wuth him, and then the TV world just amplified that until his shadow became 11/10 flaming gay and into bodybuilders. And as you discover later in her social link, Naoto is actually pretty damn cute underneath her own Japanese gender role mask. I kind of wonder if Kanji is just into moe. Makes me wonder how the "cute things" dialogue translates.

There is a joke scene at Valentine's where Kanji can get you chocolate (iirc if you two-time your dates), but I've seen that setup in other VNs too as a joke scene where you fuck up with the love interest so your bro shows up as a joke. Narratively, I chalk that up to him being a bit of a dumbass awkward dork, which he definitely is underneath his thug exterior.

Honestly he and Naoto have the best intertwined themes in the series. Pity the west just confused all the complexity for "Kanji's gay!" and, even less understandably, "Naoto's trans!" I've see Kanji described as "queer" too which is also dumb. He's just Kanji, mask and all. That is the point that gets missed when the left tries to shove him in their own categorical box.

Kanji's glasses have a rainbow on them.

Whether he's gay or not remains a mystery even to himself, but I think the message was supposed to be that he can accept himself for whatever he is. It's basically pro LGBT without having Kanji be definitely gay. Naoto ends up being a hot girl, so they escape angering most of the dudes that play those games and are into the waifus.

At least that's what I remember of it. It's been a really long time.

Hikawa's Reason from Nocturne is straight up uber communism. Kind of like most Law routes.

Not willing to go berserk over multiples paths being open, including ones I disagree with. If the game shoehorns you into choosing a libtard route I will be pissed though. The story sounds similar enough to Nocturne, very Nietzchean. God/the King is dead - what now? It should allow you to choose/ally with different factions with different philosophies.

I'd love to see original Japanese vs English translation comparisons.

Right now it's potentially looking pretty bad. A lot of the praise is going towards its DEI nature. Won't know the truth of it until I see the original vs the localization.

I didn't click on this thread for ages because good god that is the most stupid name for a game I've ever heard. Something definitely lost in translation.

But boy those review scores are good!

. . .I can't find anything about this game having routes/multiple endings. I just kind of assumed by the basic premise I read before trying to ignore spoilers that there would be. The king is dead and a new ruler must fight for the right to rule. It's ripe for SMT-style philosophical choices.

We are really going to be playing as a "diverse" group of slave moralists, aren't we?

Oh, man... this game looks absolutely hideous on the Steam deck. It helps a little bit if you set the resolution to 200%, but the frame rate tanks and it becomes unplayable. It's not even that there is seemingly no anti-aliasing, but it seems like they have applied some nasty sharpening filter to the entire game. Damn shame... Looks a lot worse than Persona 5 in my opinion.

Just because these characters hold these opinions doesn't mean your character will agree with them. From what I've read, the whole point of the game is to get all these disparate parties to back your claim as king. So that probably means getting some these people to soften their extreme positions and consider compromise. It's politics 101.

This scene from 2012's Lincoln is a perfect example of this:

Yeah... I think I'm going to pass on this one at least until I see what visual mods are released for it. I tried it on my main PC at 4K and 200% rendering resolution, and while it cleaned up the image quality, it also revealed just how poor a lot of the assets are. The lighting is terrible and the overall image looks downright hideous in my opinion. Like I'm playing an upscaled but really early Japanese game from the PS3 era before they figured out how to really use shaders and such.

Yup runs so quiet on my PC I wasn't sure I actually had a game going. Loved the demo but the price I feel will drop by Xmas. Wait to buy the full game on a steep discount. That being said I could care less for the graphics it'll likely be one of my favorites when I actually get it.

THIS might solve some of those issues.

It's supposedly the same engine as P3:Reloaded, and I thought that looked fine. I'm not sure why Metaphor is having so many issues, unless they just did a poor job optimizing it.

Also, there's not exactly a lot of graphics options in the demo settings. I wonder if those will be expanded in the full release?

Thanks. P3:Reloaded was actually made using Unreal Engine 4.

Without context, it's kind of impossible to say anything about those lines. It's perfectly reasonable that characters in their fictional universe could hold such opinions. Do we even know what positions those characters occupy in the story?

Not in particular. Right now all the reviews out are lefty Marxist-LARPers and they are gushing over the political messaging. The most in-depth review was saying that it is a very literal "Metaphor" (I think they mean allegory) to current day politics.
It's very hard to say how literal or artistic or interpretable or "woke", i.e. being against racism isn't woke ffs, how much is localization, etc.
It's kind of a mess. I'm not going to be the test subject , so I'm hoping for some feedback from here or other sane people's take.

I'd be curious to know how this stacks up against Unicorn Overlord from earlier in the year.

I love the art style, and ATLUS combat systems are usually good to excellent. My only question mark is the localization and the overall themes, whether they're handled well or not. Sounds like it's still a big question mark if the SJWs are praising it.

To my eyes at least, the games look at least a generation apart and P3:Reloaded is not even a great example of using the UE4 tech.

Yeah, I see it now.

This was built on the Persona 5 engine, not the P3: Reloaded Engine.

It shows in game, although it runs great on my PC.

After watching that DF video I'm amazed it's not able to hit a stable 4k/60 on PS5
