Thread: Mario Kart World announced
I'm down for it. Somehow they sidestepped MK8 — which will still get plenty of play at my house — by offering a big open world and more distinct track features.

All the 'extra' shit is definitely not stuff I was looking for in a Mario Kart game. Hopefully it'll be possible to play it in a much more 'traditional' way if desired.

Omg Test Drive Unlimited format for Mario Karts.

Man I LOVED open world driving with friends, we would spend hours just cruising. This will move so many Switch 2s if they do voice communication right. Even if they don't actually.

I wonder if they still do MK8 upgrade pack? Or would they worry about canabalizing sales of this game?

Both games can coexist. Make MK8 Super Deluxe with 12 more cups. Make it the 'Ultimate' MK of the old style of fixed tracks, while World does the big open world thing.

the problem after that is… where do you go from there? At the end of the day you only need so many kart racing games.

This game looks so great. I played the SHIT out of MK8 on the switch. Was one of the few switch games I actually played on line with friends. Was a blast collecting all the trophies on all the tracks.

This looks like a dope evolution of that game. I am excited for the dedicated Direct where they deep dice into the features. The idea of being able to drive 'anywhere' and from track to track, sounds super interesting. Hopefully the landscape is filled with Easter eggs or collectibles that encourage exploration.

The open world gameplay didn't really show anything other than free roam and collecting coins. If that's all there is, I'm not really interested in it. There should be lots of little activities/checklist items to give the world a reason to exist.

LOL. The first thing he did in free roam was go and drive on one of the racing tracks. I think he missed the point of free roaming.

I just hope there's some sense of progression in the single player aspect. Mario Kart 8 on Wii U had you unlocking all the parts for the cars and stuff, then MK8 Deluxe on Switch was just like "ok you booted the game up, here's everything, there's nothing to grind for."

I wanna grind for something lol

This one Mario Kart enthusiast online who specializes in shortcuts in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe pointed out something interesting. He noticed that some of the songs for tracks in MK8 DLX were being played while racing at certain stretches in Mario Kart World. I kind of wonder if Mario Kart World is fool proof and they intend to somehow 'place' (most, if not all) of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's racetracks within the World? Not sure at all how they would do it though. Maybe all oldschool racecourses fit into the World somewhere which hasn't been shown or revealed yet? Just a small guess of mine

Like maybe it's Nintendo's Mario Kart version of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate of Mario Kart, where every previous character, stage, music, and more plus the new additions take form into one massively impressive game? Nintendo has done an outstanding job with their multiplayer games in this way ever since the Switch released. Newer fans get a taste of the glory days of old and the older fans get to have what they grew up with as well; played in new and exciting ways

Knockout Tour looks the most interesting to me. Seems like an evolution of the few long linear race courses from Mario Kart 7. I like that Moo Moo Cow is a playable racer too and that battle mode is returning.

I don't think I like the change in Grand Prix to race from one course to the next. I could see it getting old fast and I would rather the next race start right after the last one ends as usual.

Visuals are pretty decent enough but I do wonder how much better the game would look had they just stuck to the traditional Grand Prix race design without the need for an interconnected world.

Knockout tour is a variation of the elimination race mode from a number of other racing titles. It definitely works great for the formula. The advantage MKW has over, say, GRIP, which has the same mode and a lot of the same mechanics, is that the elimination is progress-based rather than time-based. GRIP just eliminates the racer in last place every 30 seconds. The open world of MKW allows for a single long track rather than a circuit loop, so the race is like a miniature tournament compressed into a single race, with several 'finish lines' along the way and several 'losers' in each cutoff.

I know what it is. I meant it is an evolution of the linear checkpoint races from Mario Kart 7 (e.g. Maka Wuhu or Rainbow Road) but longer and now eliminating racers. So the open world free-roaming has nothing to do with them breaking away from circuit loop races but it does add unnecessary padding to the Grand Prix.

I really hope you can run a classic GP, I don't want to do "laps" from point A to point B. I want to do laps around a track, with maybe a sprinkling of point A to point B maps.

Pretty sure in the Nintendo Direct they said GPs were still a thing.

Not me. I want this to be Road Rash featuring Nintendo characters. I hope they introduce bats, chains, knives, and police toads.

EDIT: And I want to see some blood in this. Lots of blood. And it's time for these plumbers to act like real plumbers and swear a lot.

I'd like to see Yoshi squeeze eggs out its cloaca and splatter half-formed Yoshi embryos onto opposing racers.
