Thread: Marathon launches September 23 (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC)
I'll check it out. I actually love the art style and have always enjoyed bungies gunplay. I could never get into destiny but I think this might hook me.

Huge disconnect on the forum. There's already 200k people in the discord to try and get access to the beta. Also game supposedly will not cost full price. Long as it drops at like 40 dollars it will do numbers.

I finally figured out what the artstyle reminded me of.

Been in my wishlist for forever... Should probably change that next sale, looks perfect for the steamdeck.

Just saw the trailer… the art style and cinematography was dope. I thought it was all super cool until they started talking. Huge tonal mismatch.
Not into the genre, put from people who are it sounds like extraction shooter jammed into an hero shooter model and won't be able to sustain a player base.

The art style

In the real sense, sure it is wonky as fuck, but graphically it's got a very Designers Republic vibe going on. The dudes who did all the graphic design styling for Wipeout and had a huge influence on Graphic Design during the 1990s onwards

They're not aiming for realism, for sure. The sense I get is that the players are essentially human/android hybrids sent out to gather resources and rebirthed if they get killed, so they're cobbled together in some way.

The general direction of the style is good and could be dope. I was intrigued by it after the reveal trailer. I'm a sucker for super clean futuristic visuals. But they fucked it up imo.

Look at the sheer size of the shoes.
Did you see the shoes. And their size.

To be fair, that character model seems to be the most out there with the big boots.

True. Some of them look super interesting and really cool to me and it makes me wonder how the customization could be if there is any... But I also can't help thinking about how, as a super die hard halo fan, the last straw for me was when they introduced silly armor customization like the cat armor crap. It killed my immersion of the serious futuristic military vibe Halo was for me because it just felt so retarded and childlike whenever someone wearing that crap would pop up. I knew then there was no hope for the series and gave up on it. Even the hayabusa armor felt like it was straying from the overall artstyle and didn't feel halo to me, even if I thought it looked cool.

That's why I dig the look. It's jarring. Autistic safety culture hyperviolence. Seems like a very plausible future.

If I'm reading the storyline of Cinematic trailer they released correctly, basically all of the characters are essentially androids or cyborgs, who are sent by AI entities to search for scraps/loot on the planets surface colonies and face off against the security bots as well as rival AI gangs. If they die then, they get rebirthed into new shells at home bas. As such I don't get the sense the AIs care much about blending in, and this might be a reflection of the look of the structures prior to the collapse.

Yes the other ones are way better tbh. Still not really great, I feel like the designs are like 80% there but need some refinements to make them look slick.

I would assume there will be a lot of customisation options within each group as well.

I just watched a stream of this, and outside of causing some pretty bad eye strain it looked boring as hell.

Game is fucked though, it has built in mouse and keyboard aim assist so it's gonna be DOA with anyone who takes shooters seriously.

Seems like there's very little excitement around that Alpha test.

Same, I watched Byf (Destiny lore guy) play it and the core loop seems so dull. The shooting will probably be fine, but there's little reason to actively seek out other players for a fight beyond wanting more materials, which you can already get via looting and fighting NPCs.

Hard to believe that they're going to charge money for this. As a F2P game, I think it stood a chance of at least finding a small dedicated audience.

For an extraction shooter to really work there has to be risk, the risk creates tension which can be enjoyable in itself but then that tension culminates in feelings of success and reward if your risk pays off, e.g. the ultimate win being extraction with loot and therefore progression. I think there's probably some space for a game that's not as hardcore as Tarkov but not as forgiving as described here because if you end up in a situation where loot is plentiful, it's too easy to extract, you don't lose much on death etc then there's no real risk so there's not much tension and winning no longer feels rewarding. It's a fine balancing act and you'll never get it perfect for every player, some players will always complain no matter what.

to me there is zero hook to the game....if you think back to the first game that did looter shooter (i think it was the division) that game at least had a build system in place...cover mechanics and the tension when you call down the chopper anticipating that other agent that suddenly appeared is about to go rogue on your ass

Apex improved on it with interesting characters and mechanics and a the worlds were much more open...also it was free

Tarkov i didnt play much of as everytime i did it was infested with hackers

Marathon only has the unique ps2 artsyle going for it imo and people dont really like it

i do honestly think the ship will sink faster than concord did here as there are much better free options available
this might be the game that finally kills off bungie
