Thread: LTTP - Super Mario Galaxy (U R MR GAY)
I got Super Mario Galaxy 2 for my birthday and I had heaps of fun playing that. I don't know if Galaxy 1 had that many differences to Galaxy 2, but I thought the two games were too similar so I didn't get around to playing Galaxy 1.

Super Mario 64 = Super Mario Sunshine >>> Super Mario Galaxy > Super Mario Odyssey >>>>>>>>>>>>> Super Mario Galaxy 2 and I still need to play Super Mario 3D World so undecided placement there

That is the definitive 3D Mario GOAT list. Go eat some Taco Bell and ponder what I just said Nicholai. Saying Odyssey is better than SM64 or Sunshine is crazy talk

@Franky Family I'm revoking your Nintendo card if you don't like the wii mote.

Brudda you need to play sin and punishment 2 asap or re4 wii edition
Bro fuck the Wii. Wiimote was hideous. Motion Controls gimmick was so lame. It was fun for some games sure. But mainly party games and shooters. Wiggling a controller 1.5 inches to the left or right wasn't fun and ruined immersion. I've said it a handful of times, best aspect about the Wii was its Virtual Console. Zero desire to plug in that ugly setup ever again tbh. The only way I'd ever go back, is if the games were being sold for like $1 each. Then maybe it'd be worth giving it a second shot. But I gave it plenty of chances. Botched games - the console

I remember being consumed with the prospect of the Wiimote when it was first shown to the world. It was definitely an alluring controller to look at and try to figure out how it was going to work. But that was before it released and when the hype and mystery was strong. Once you play with it, it really ain't shit bro. You hold a nub in one hand, bread stick in the other, wiggle. That's about it

Man, I know Sunshine is polarizing, but for me, it's a classic. There are surely issues that could have been improved, but taken as a package, it's phenomenal to me. Hearing the disdain so many have for it always perplexes me. But we all like what we like.

I like the setting a lot. And I like the movement a lot except when you lose the water pack.

I also enjoyed figuring out little secrets and stuff.

Nah man.

I'll be the first to say, of course there are some games that abuse waggle, but that's a surface level take on the system.

Of course in most examples of games with motion controls, sure a button press would suffice. But something like madworld feels better with the motion feedback.

I suggested sin snd punishment 2, a game that would be drastically worse without the controller, and has no motion, only pointer controls. It's a fantastic game. Pointer controls are the real slam dunk on wii, putting motion aside.

But there's also games like dragon ball budokai tenkaichi 3, that really benefit from motion in that it FEELS really fucking cool to use a kamehameha with motion.

Or take re4 wii edition. Instead of pushing a button to get the knife out, aiming and it just sort of feels off ; wii edition is just a shake and it locks on to targets and knifes.

The ir pointer drastically elevates that game, to be the best version of the best tps ever. I've played that fucking version probably 9 times.

I could go on but suffice it to say, I own more games for the wii than any other console. Except maybe ps4. There's just tons of cool gems and great games.

I think for game play purists like myself it's always gonna be a sore spot. It doesn't look that great and it doesn't feel nearly as technically crafted as other 3d Mario's.

That being said it has heart. Its very stylized and commits to its themes. There's some real creativity in some of the levels and the jetpack/tools given make for some really interesting moments.

I just cant move past the feel of the game. When it works it still just doesn't feel nearly as polished as others 3d Mario's

And when it doesnt its a complete miss for me. The friggen platforming behind the wall on the amusement park stage made me want to chuck the controller.

Had a decent bit of fun with the Wii, but the games I chose either sucked with Motion Controls, were uninspiring with Motion Controls, or the other half; me playing retro on the VC or GameCube games since the Wii was backwards compatible with them. I think my entire Wii games library was this:

Wii Sports (good)
Rayman: Raving Rabbids (very fun)(great use of motion Controls)
TLoZ: Twilight Princess (good)(uninspiring motion control)
Super Mario Galaxy (great)(okay motion)
Super Paper Mario (mediocre)(not sure if it used much motion)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 (weak)(okay motion)
Mario Party 8 (great)(decent motion control)
Mario Party 9 (weak)(decent motion control)
TLoZ: Skyward Sword (okay)(strong motion control)
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (sucks cock)(horrendous controls)
Mario Kart Wii (sucks)(poor controls even with wheel)

If you look at my library, there are two or three good games that I played from 2006-2012. The rest is filled with pure mediocrity. Zelda was in a dark age pretty much during the Wii days. I still will never forget those days, but to say I was impressed or happy with the games I played? Nope, never. Super Mario Galaxy was excellent. TLoZ: Twilight Princess was very unique although kinda dull tbh. MP8 was a lot of fun. That's my experience in a nutshell. I probably could have made the entire experience a lot more fun though, had I picked more games but the ones I was super excited about, most were pretty far from hitting the center of the target

Mk8 is a bit iffy on motion, but that's why you can use a gamecube or classic controller on many games, as did I.

I dig mk wii btw, many hours I played online. It's not the strongest mk for sure but the bikes and wheelies added something fresh, though it pretty much meant karts were second class.

But even on mk dude i got really good with the wii mote plus chuck, probably because I spent so much time with the controller.

Brawl sucks yeah lol. Brawl is basically just a shiny Nintendo encyclopedia for me.

Galaxy 1 and 2 are the 5th and 6th best 3D Mario games. 1 is especially bad because of the complete lack of challenge and overly gay waggle and IR shit used in place of platforming at every turn. It was a bore to replay though it in 3D All-stars. Lots of inventive ideas with planetoids & gravity and a banger OST, but not exactly fun Mario games to play 15 years later.

3D World was a vast improvement on the "new direction" idea Galaxy tried, and Odyssey perfected the 64 and Sunshine formula.

Come at me.
This guy Nintendo's.

Gameplay purist my ass, you just wanted smooth sailing with no real challenge like a weenie. The one Mario game that brings the oldschool difficulty back (even if some moments were extreme) and babies wanna cry over it because they couldn't win their trophy without precision, patience, without dying or trial and error. Sunshine punishes and pushes players to do something right. Where SM64 punished players for inaccuracies, Sunshine took that to the next level

Just about every level or every other level you could expect to be challenged. The real issue for most is that they failed or had to do something five times, a dozen times, maybe fifteen times before they succeeded and probably gave up. The game is like literally the only game in the Mario series that dared to take it back to the NES and SNES era where ground gained in a level or section meant took you for the adventure it was and made you toil and earn it. No handout baby stars and moons like in Galaxy series and Odyssey

Since when does great controls Trump excellent gameplay? Super Mario Odyssey has the smoothest controls to date but you can literally buy your way to the next level........

There's a difference between challenge and bad design. And I don't believe anybody said anything about difficulty in the thread?

I already stated galaxy 1s flaw for me is that it's too easy. I am no stranger to that fact. And that's why I think Galaxy 2 is the better game because it has far more challenge than Galaxy 1.

Sunshine is filled with bad design. Punishing a player for making a bad move is not the same as failing to provide conveyance and fair platforming.

Having to do something 15 times isn't an automatic sign it requires precision. I would look at Galaxy 2 in that regard. As imo, it's the pinnacle of 3d Mario Challenge.

Several of the stand alone platforming parts where you lose the jetpack are filled with bad camera and bad visibility sections.

Not to mention the camera is straight trash at various times during regular game play.

When you died because the camera jumped sideways while you were pushing the stick in a direction, and now the direction you're pushing is no longer where you want to go, to me that's not "challenge." Sunshine was clunky as hell (at least the All-Stars version, I never played the Gamecube one).

I think one of the worst gameplay experiences I have had in a big Nintendo game was that godawful pachinko Shine. The game was unironically full of jank, but that was the worst.

omg that level pissed me off so much

and the back wall in the amusement park level that @Nikana mentioned. The camera was so broken and the actual idea for what the platforming would be was flawed as hell.

The one thing I'll give you is the janky camera angles that players have to deal with. That's the only negative I can think of in Sunshine. Many mention the Pachinko level as well (janky camera again) but I don't recognize any other areas as problematic. The no FLUDD oldschool areas? Those are fine. People just like to whine because they're hard to complete and tense moments in the game. You're up like hundreds of feet and if you fall repeatedly you do the entire thing over

Super Mario Galaxy 2 was easier than Super Mario Galaxy. The core game definitely is. I didn't even give the rest of the stars the time of day because there was no challenge in like 85% of the stars I went for to complete the game. Shit was fucking boring

Bad design where? Once you master the controls you have a top tier 3D platforming game; it's platforming almost at its peak, and creatively at its peak if you ask me. Also WTF is "fair platforming" anyone can get 100% in Super Mario Sunshine if they have the persistence to keep going. It's a challenging game, brutal at times, but that's part of the beauty of this game

Saying Galaxy 2 is easier than 1 means your are either full of shit and never played it or you have played very little and are assuming several things.

Galaxy 2 is literally designed to be a harder Galaxy 1. It assumes you've played the first and builds off of the skills you learn in first.

The only complaint a majority of players have in the gameplay department of galaxy 2 is that it's too hard. Especially green star challenges.

But I digress.

I already agreed/stated earlier that Sunshine, at times, has a lot of heart and can be creative. It's the inconsistency that brings it down. For every good shine/location there's a boring/badly designed world/location.

pahcinko....well enough said.

The underwater controls you are forced to use. Borderline impossible to control correctly.

The hotel has almost nothing creative that builds on the skills you've learnt throughout the game. It's a world filled with bad gimmicks. The blind discovery of trying to discover the vents, like the one you have find in the bathroom, is not fun in any capacity.

Giving a shine in every level to literally just running and shooting Baby Bowser/fake Mario...it was clearly rushed and filler content.

ITS the only Mario game in my memory that is legitimately buggy. It lacks polish in several areas.

list goes on and on.

Fair platforming is when I can look at a platform challenge for the very first time and based on the skills the game has taught me I can complete that challenge.

Sunshine puts you in several situations in the non flood areas that are trial and error. Yes you can master them, but only by trial and error. That's not fair platforming. That's rope memory of its lack of conveyance.

I will say my most recent playthrough was on the SMA version. I do not know if that version has more issues than GC but in general there is way more latency for those sections when it comes to timing jumps as well. Compared to other Mario titles. It could also be the 30 fps cap. But in general, it lacks polish all around.

You guys are normie fools, this is why we can't have nice things.

Wii mote is the best thing we never asked for and I wish it was still here, and improved on.
100% Facts. Now we're in the dumbest timeline where everything is pulled towards the PC set-top box with a 2-stick/4-face/4-shoulder gamepad singularity at the end of time. VR is the inheritor, but there's still so many dead branches of ideas left on Wii waiting to be explored, kinda like the early days of Saturn and PSX.
Mario 3D World (Wii U version) is still my best Mario game. Exactly what I expected from a Mario game in 3D, the old formula but with 3D type gameplay. Odyssey was the worst mainline game, even worse than Sunshine.
Huh. I prefer 2D to 3D Mario a lot, and LOVED 3D Land+World's fixed camera, 8-way control and short stages. I thought Odyssey was the best 3D game at capturing the "fun-per-moment" pace of the 2D games. You ever tried Wario World on Gamecube? It feels like a proto Mario 3D land -- including the perspective puzzles -- but with some beat-em-up gameplay thrown in for good measure. Underrated gem. Be curious what you thought.

No. Didn't even remember there was a Wario World for GC. I had resold my GC shortly after as I loathed the controller layout. Weirdly I have many of those for my Wii U.

I just told you my experience with Super Mario Galaxy 2. The base game is fucking EAAAASYYYYY with a capital letter every letter of the word. It's way easier than Super Mario Galaxy and way less entertaining as well if we're talking about the base game where you get enough stars to face Bowser and win. I was literally so bored throughout playing the game, that I was disgusted as a fan. Definitely felt unchallenged and treated like a toddler, because even 3 year olds can make their way through most of that game. I still remember playing that dull ass level where you become a bee. Bosses were nothing. Floating Yoshi where he balloons. Tropical Waterfall vacation level. Really cool looking lava enemies, but again the game is way too simple and easy. I bought the game the first day it came out, I even played the game for 8-10 hours straight one night until the sun came up and I was up for 26 hours straight. I beat the base game, had roughly 76-92 stars about (somewhere around there) and I honestly felt like it was a very average game and it definitely my least favorite 3D Mario game. The visuals were top notch. Its controls were great. Everything else felt like a drag. Maybe 5 stars or so did the trick for me, the rest were empty and soulless routes to reaching a star that did not impress at all. Collecting coins in this game are completely useless given how easy each course is. I remember that level with all those massive round Twomps collecting coins and thinking just how pointless it was to pursue coins. There's no denying it, the main course of SMG2 is maddeningly easy. The real challenge comes after the main game, which in itself is a terrible decision and poor game design

Paper Mario: TTYD was built on the foundation of the original Paper Mario and added a lot more but is it a better game? No, not to me it ain't. Is it harder? No

Serena Beach Hotel boils down to camera angles, if you can't roll with the punches in this game of course you're going to hate it. I love that level. Even though I will admit that it is frustrating, but in a good way. It was fun trying to earn that star or blue coin where you hit a switch and rush to the prize before the time runs out. It felt great to finally reach it

That's not really an indication of rushed; it reminds the player the theme of the game: something isn't quite right at this luxurious vacation island resort and there's a perpetrator running around actively sabotaging and ruining every last one of Mario's vacation plans

You can find every last detail you dislike about Super Mario Sunshine, it doesn't really affect the fanbase. There are plenty of people who think its flaws make it the game it is and enjoyed it as much as they did their time with Super Mario 64, more or less. There can be this back and forth arguing but neither side is likely to concede. I'm calling it a flawed masterpiece, you think of it as a janky mess and a disappointment. This is one of the most polarizing games out there and has been since its release. I still remember my classmates at a different table in middle school talking shit about the game mid-lesson. I was on the other side of the room thinking they're way out of line and that it's a great game lol

Still going with you're full of shit calling SMG2 "easy" for the sake of trying to prop up your argument. But I digress.

It's a fact development of Sunshine was rushed. The developer said so. I'm gonna believe him.

I agree that frustration can lead to better game play. See doom eternal. My issue with sunshine, again, is that frustration comes at lack of conveyance. I am not learning anything. I am simply doing trial and error.

Fully aware its polarizing. Not attacking you personally. Just giving you me perspective.

Respect.

Why would I lie? If you can't even take my word on a simple video game opinion that I'm giving you, then what are you doing wasting both of our time and space here in Grinchy's LTTP thread? I have had the exact same opinion of SMG2 for years, dating back to when I played the game, dating back to GAF, dating back to here and now. It hasn't changed. You don't have to believe me, but I'm telling you that it's the truth that I felt the game was easy, boring, and kinda soulless for a Mario game. I obviously can't remember every detail of every star task but yes, in general, the game is easy and boring if we're talking about the first 70-90 stars or so. That's how it felt to me. And it wasn't magical like the first SMG imo, not at allt. It's not like I wanted SMG2 to disappoint, but it did
