When the Wii came out, I wasn't impressed. I had a shiny-as-fuck PS3 and it was like a spaceship compared to the Fisher Price Wagglebox with a bowling minigame that didn't even require you to correctly move your arm to bowl a strike.

I saw screenshots and videos of Mario Galaxy and came away with the impression that all these little spheres with a single enemy on them were a concession that had to be made due to Nintendo being cheap and duct-taping 2 Gamecubes together and calling it a new generation device.

I tried Galaxy a handful of times over the years on emulators and even tried playing it on a Wii U. It never clicked. I would play a couple levels and it felt like it wasn't for me.

Damn, was I wrong. I've been playing Galaxy on the Switch with that All-Stars collection. This game is fantastic. If this was the Mario game that existed when I was 14, it would have blown my mind possibly even more than Mario 64 did in its time. Once your brain wraps around the idea of being able to platform around a sphere that has its own gravity, it starts feeling so great to play. The boss fights were well-executed. Lots of secrets to find, lots of extra levels, lots of smart level design, and just overall very satisfying to beat and continue grinding on. I can't believe it took me so many tries to get into this.

I liked the game when it came out but didn't love it. Like you, it didn't fully click.

Played it on All-Stars, it's still good but still didn't fully click with me. I'd rather just play Mario 64.

Maybe one day I will get into it more.

Im a Galaxy 2 over Galaxy 1 person but I find both to be some of the best games every made. MG1 is front loaded in my opinion in terms of the best galaxies. But its still a fantastic game. My only gripe is its a bit too easy.

I need to give 2 another shot again now. I didn't fully finish the 120 stars in Galaxy 1 but I did get to like 95. I liked the level of challenge compared to Sunshine.

Sunshine just had some levels where you didn't have the water pack and the running/platforming/camera controls were so crappy that the level of precision it required didn't match the level of precision the player was given IMO. Though maybe there's something funky with the All-Stars version compared to playing on a Gamecube.

Played through Sunshine myself recently and I was not impressed. It felt very thrown together and the lack of real variety in locations stuck out like crazy. The random random platforming parts never felt great. Mario didnt feel like he had real analog control.

I have a love/hate thing with Sunshine. It does so much shit wrong, but once the jetpack controls clicked with me I found myself really liking the movement a lot. But it's like it's an 8-direction analog game that wasn't made with that in mind or something. Just feels wrong a lot of the time.

And some of the levels/challenges were horribly designed.

The stuff with the casino/hotel thing drove me mad. Conveyance was thrown out the window when it came to that design. I think in the end its not a bad game but its by far the most 7/10 Mario. Its functional. Theres a lot to like. But it does not capitalize on its strengths which is where Mario...shines....

Hey @p_xavier I think you forgot to log into your @SpartanN92 account before replying to yourself

SMG1 + 2 brought me back to Mario. I never liked 64 and Sunshine was awful. But SMG returned to a more platforming approach and it had so much originality and creativity. I'll never forget being "stuck" on the first planet, then jumping off the side and the gravity kicks in. Completely rewrote the rules of platforming, you are supposed to jump off the edge now.

I'll try replaying it. It didn't click with me, I absolutely hate waggle controls.

What's nice about playing the Switch version is I just played with a regular controller. The only waggle you have to do is using the gyro on the controller as a pointer to collect the star bits and shoot them.

But yeah I bet on an actual Wii it was way more annoying to actually have to waggle as a button input. I never liked that stuff on any platform.

Excited to play Galaxy 2 some time soon, the idea that it's even as good if not better than the first game as some people say is crazy to me, Galaxy blew me away as an adult, I can only imagine how amazing it would've been had I played it back in the Wii days. Easily the best Nintendo game ever for me, and it's up there as one of my favourite games of all time, I'm saying that having played Super Mario 64 on the N64 back in the day so not even nostalgia beat the awesomeness of Galaxy.

And I'll play 2 with my Wiimote instead of Frankenstein-ing the controls into a Dualshock 4 this time. Rrecently learned that Dolphin simply supports the Wiimotes without the need for the official IR sensor, I used to think I needed an adapter or something for that but turns out it just works(™).

The sensor bar emits IR light so the remote has a point of reference, so it doesn't send any data to the system itself. For a while in college I was using two tea lights placed on top of my tv because the sensor bar broke when some drunk dumbass accidentally yanked the wire and it smashed into the ground.

It was me the dumbass was me.

Thought it was an excellent game when it came out yet never did a revisit after beating it. Closest to a replay was going through Galaxy 2, which I very much enjoyed though it did feel like a gloried expansion pack to some degree. Don't recall having any real issues with the gyro controlled sections(Holding it like a joystick for balancing Mario on a ball worked strangely well) but I do remember hating that spring suit power-up since it only existed to make shit more difficult.

Yeah, I read about that too, it's quite interesting realising it's kind of the opposite of traditional IR remotes like TV remotes and the likes.

For some reason I have 3 spare Wii sensor bars, and I never yanked the original into the ground, it still works, so I have 4 Wii sensor bars for whatever reason, I might use one of them just to feel like they're useful.

I liked Galaxy 2, but it's really a glorified expansion. It lacks the space operatic story involving Rosalina and bombastic soundtrack, instead going for unimaginitive world map like in every 2D Mario game. It didn't wow me as Galaxy 1 but it plays perfectly.

Galaxy 1 and 2 are the 5th and 6th best 3D Mario games. 1 is especially bad because of the complete lack of challenge and overly gay waggle and IR shit used in place of platforming at every turn. It was a bore to replay though it in 3D All-stars. Lots of inventive ideas with planetoids & gravity and a banger OST, but not exactly fun Mario games to play 15 years later.

3D World was a vast improvement on the "new direction" idea Galaxy tried, and Odyssey perfected the 64 and Sunshine formula.

Come at me.

Yoooo hold up the music in Galaxy 2 is at least as great as the first game let's be reasonable here.

You guys are normie fools, this is why we can't have nice things.

Wii mote is the best thing we never asked for and I wish it was still here, and improved on.
PS Move was better.

Mario 3D World (Wii U version) is still my best Mario game. Exactly what I expected from a Mario game in 3D, the old formula but with 3D type gameplay. Odyssey was the worst mainline game, even worse than Sunshine.

Super Mario 64 = Super Mario Sunshine >>> Super Mario Galaxy > Super Mario Odyssey >>>>>>>>>>>>> Super Mario Galaxy 2 and I still need to play Super Mario 3D World so undecided placement there

That is the definitive 3D Mario GOAT list. Go eat some Taco Bell and ponder what I just said Nicholai. Saying Odyssey is better than SM64 or Sunshine is crazy talk

My favorite 3D Mario by a mile.
Game is simply magic.

Wish it would get a proper remake.

Don't Really react me @Franky Family this shit is fire especially when the vocals kick in.

What the heck, there were lyrics in SMG2 OST? I honestly don't remember this track. But listen Kong, there is no way that SMG has the inferior soundtrack. Buoy Base Galaxy theme? Gusty Gardens theme? And then we have Stardust Galaxy piano theme, Rosalina's Observatory theme, there are countless 10/10 tracks. And listen to this, THE perfect opener to the Star Festival:

Do not talk ill of Sunshine in front of me ever again.
It's not good and at the very least, fludd takes away from what a mario game should be.

Miyamoto just had an obsession with water at the time lol

But, I really like the visual style. As far as playing it, I couldn't stomach 1 play through
