Not sure this even exists, due to gaming "journalism" being the joke it is, so I am hoping there may be enough people tired with what is happening in our hobby that someone has started a podcast that just discusses games.

Obviously Ryan at GiantBomb set the standard which fell off precipitously in quality and general enjoyable entertainment with his passing. Is there anything out there that bounces between that feel and just factual (essentially advertisements with developer interviews) information like early Major Nelson?

I just need something that is entertaining to listen to for an hour while I exercise. Sadly, even finding ANY podcast for just about anything is hard to get away from being infused with Woke nonsense (podcasts about Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, etc...) which all suffer from being in a captured culture from the intersectionalists. I have Shawn Ryan's podcast, someone who is decidedly NOT woke, but his content gets pretty heavy and is the opposite of what I want while exercising, same with Dan Carlin's Hardcore history, which shines when doing road trips or traveling by plane.

Maybe we aren't quite there, yet, but with the rise of parallel businesses/social media outlets/economy, I was hoping there was some unknown gem that just wants to talk and enjoy vidya. I don't have much interest in a podcast that soley relies upon a specific game type (like JRPG's only or just the indie-sphere), but something that has a good blend of retro, new releases, old classics, doing post-mortems or retrospectives, interviews, some light pop culture but couched in humor and having fun.

I also miss good gaming podcasts.

Videogamer used to be my favourite, but all the original guys left and once it was left with just a chick and a camp Irishman, I completely lost interest.

The Podquisitiion even used to be decent, back when Laura Dale didnt talk about being a Tranny, Jim Stirling hadn't trooped out himself, and the Irish musician kept their shit balanced with his normie tastes. No idea what it's like now though, Jim Stirling's patter had already become stale long before he went full pervert.

Easy Allies used to be OK, and was the last I listened to regularly, but barely anyone on that show had any charisma, and I recently heard they'd started trooning out too, so that's another one I'm not going to revist any time soon.

D-Pad, maybe we could do our own Podcasts that actually focus on gaming with its ups and downs? Food for thought. @WesternBlood @Mirabilis

If no one can make gaming podcasts without woke bullshit or heavy content why not make our own that just focuses on the actual games?

As nice as that would be, it would require at least two dedicated people with enough time and talent to make it work. I'm the problem obviously, because I don't have the time, talent or am dedicated enough to do something like this, as I am looking for something started by someone else for me to consume.

I'm not trying to say for anyone here to not do it, but it is essentially trying to hit a hole in one out of the gate with so much going against said person with no resources. As much as I hate to say it, something like Daily Wire could have a space for this, but it is inevitably going to lean in a political sphere that I don't necessarily want in a podcast that is celebrating escapism. And I don't want that kind of thing, even because it would still focus on a culture war.

I guess I want people in GenX to work with the Millennial generation to introduce them to ignoring people shaming one for enjoying bodacious babes, masculinity, absurd humor, and just enjoy fun without being hectored by outsiders telling us we need to make everything political and point it out. Kind of like a, we enjoy dumb jokes and don't care if you are mad about it, because it is funny. A combination of outrageous and over the top 80's action aficionados with nerds who enjoy sublime experiences like PSN's Journey or anything that is enjoyable for any reason and can remain unbent and unshamed in the pursuit of discussing vidya.

Whenever this idea come's up, I've both supported it wholeheartedly and thrown my hat in as a semi regular guest presenter.

I'm far too busy to be on any kind of weekly schedule, but I'm absolutely comfortable with talking for extended periods and have a fuck ton of strong, generally well researched opinions.

I suspect one of the biggest hurdles would be attempting to discuss new games from developers/publishers who have already been captured by DEI officials, because they are inevitably going to not want a podcast with any sizeable number discussing their output if they are not on the same page.

Perhaps it is impossible, because there are no interesting Movie podcasts that can discuss new Hollywood for the very same. Hell it is hard to find blogs/websites that discuss the Golden and Silver age of cinema without apologizing or pointing out how things are different now and you should feel bad for a time and context that the media was created in. Meanwhile, I'm just trying to appreciate the behind the scenes trivia of a set that has Humphrey Bogart getting into an argument with a director or actress but they still somehow pulled off a fantastic flick.

I would challenge some of our D-Pad userbase to create one. I personally would love to contribute.

Sorry, I should have read through before replying. Bad habit. If no one else is willing, maybe we can partner up and do something?

D-Padders should just make one. @Kadayi and @Musky_Cheese know that I can jump online and drone into a mic for an hour or two. Whether that's podcast worthy or not is up to debate. Kad graciously tried doing a thing with me years ago and it fell through as I didn't have the editing chops or willpower to turn my our rambling into a release-worthy thing

I feel like semi-scripted would be the way to go. Participants spin up a thread and come up with a general itinerary and a time constraint. Broad brush topics are set ahead of time, and the participants more-or-less try to go through each topic in a timely manner chatting it up as ad lib as they desire, but then move on to the next topic after xx minutes pass. As the group gets a feel for pace and depth of interest, the community can gauge about how many topics per hour is reasonable, and go from t here.

I get this feeling that if you invited @and 3 others and called him in for a serious take on the podcast that he'd just start speaking incomprehensibly exactly like Taz the Tazmanian Devil until you hung up on him

I'm such a casual gamer these days compared to before that I'm not sure I can give much in the way of insights unless it relates to a particular game I've played. I fear a general D-Pad Podcast might just descend into a weekly/monthly round of 'Is it woke?' which certainly plays to a particular audience, but wouldn't necessarily be saying anything profound, and can get a bit circular in nature. To use a comparison if you looking at YouTubers, you're better off being a Critical Drinker versus a Disparu. The former is often sceptical of things that are coming out but isn't afraid to praise them if they are good and dissect them, the latter tends to shit on everything from on high ad infinitum ad nauseum and throw his hands up in the air a lot in an 'everything is terrible' fashion. Ain't nobody got time for that.gif

As regards @WesternBlood request for non-woke gaming podcasts. ACG is probably a good option as he mainly sticks to talking about the games and industry news, as well as having guests on to talk stuff.

Yeah, I agree with you here. I feel like the culture war stuff would get irritating in the sense that we've heard it all before and people are really just going in circles. Also kind of interesting you mention Critical Drinker because I was watching his movie review on Across the Spider-Verse two days ago, and it was the first time I watched one of his videos, but I was pleasantly surprised he liked it. Like you said, it's nice to get another opinion from someone who isn't afraid to praise something and doesn't fall into one of the two extremes. If you don't have that balance then you become grumpy old men and people will tune out quicker.

Man, the old Videogamer crew and podcast were awesome.

OP, I think it's genuinely a lost cause. The industry and culture has just changed.

Last stand media. It's the only gaming podcast worth listening to. Colin moriarty is a great conversationalist. I pay for the gold tier to support it. He's pretty much right down the middle on this shit. It's grown now to the point they have a podcast for the big 3. Defining duke, which has lord cognito from iron lord podcast and matty plays. I don't even have am xbox and find that enjoyable.

Iron lords podcast. It's fucken hilarious. The guy on it who goes as King has me in tears. The ultimate trash talking console warrior. It's all in jest but awesome.

Bring on the Dpad podcast.

Last Stand Media is top tier content. No nonsense. No woke shit. Colin's rants are great, but all of their podcasts are informed about the subject matter and entertaining. No PS in my household, but Sacred Symbols is the only gaming podcast I listen to weekly. Some excellent interviews and deep dives on SS+ as well, well worth the price of entry. Will give Matty and Cog a listen occasionally too as they're both good dudes with their feet on the ground who are also wokeness and bullshit-free. Nintendo podcast was a big surprise but it's been very tepid so far. They need time to gel and find their feet.

Thanks, I had forgotten about Colin Moriarty.

That's what the journalists wanted. But he is now one of the top tier ps podcasts if not gaming. They also have a variety one where they each bring a topic about anything to the table which isn't bad.

A good one if you are into the fighting scene.

El Segundo. From Craig Jones the bjj fighter who has to be one of the ultimate trolls. A great laugh

Brodeo, Idle Thumbs, and a Ryan led Bombcast were the best gaming podcasts ever. I wish we could go back to that type of discourse. In depth game impressions sprinkled with dudes just shooting the shit.

Yeah, I like Drinker. I think he's pretty even. That other dude though is an annoying middle Englander blowhard. They're a dime a dozen rent-a-gobs who always think they are right and just raise their voice and act hysterical if anyone dares disagree with their august opinions. They are sadly endemic to the UK. Zero self-awareness or self-reflection.

At the risk of sounding ridiculous, the Insert Credit podcast generally lends itself well to being non-woke because of the format of the show. It sticks to gaming because it's more like a Q&A.

You have to have an appreciation of Tim Rogers though and that might already be crossing the line for some.

I can't recall there ever being an outwardly woke topic of discussion though I am sure everyone on the show is undoubtedly a fan of the woke movement.
