Rivals is F2P though. It also has the marvel IP and isn't woke. They didn't race gender swap the characters or insert gayness. It also innovates with its destructable environments and team up mechanic.
It might not be huge but it's free to try ( so easy to get some buddies to play it) and the marvel IP will have geek virgins interested and also monetization will be easy with skins and what not.
It's ironic because Rivals was shown in the same state of play and basically killed any argument for concord. Instead of a 40$ Guardians rip off hero shooter you can have rhe real Guardians of the galaxy for free. Along with spirerman Ironman Thor Hulk strange captain America etc

I don't see how Sony is just going to quietly release this again in a couple of months as a F2P game when the F2P open beta was also a massive failure.
The whole game's aesthetic and premise needs to be completely reworked. That's a lot of time and money. No one is interested in this gay shit. If they release it F2P without a massive overhaul, the same thing will happen again.
They're better off taking the L and moving on. Tax write off is their best bet for making some money back.

The name of the game sucks as well. Everything about it seems unappealing at first glance. Got some nice visuals with cool effects and really good textures, maybe Sony can reuse some of that work for another game.

I don't see this game coming back. The internal calculations must have been done and Sony came to the realization that the server costs are not worth making it F2P. If it was going f2p they would just make it free not pull it.
Sony must view this as a massive black eye and probably want to memory hole it and make it go away.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but going free to play would involve a significant retool to work.
They'd need a ton of new content to sell and a whole new roadmap for rolling out more.
Right now they only have one unique alternate skin per character, with the rest being recolours.
There just isn't enough to sell right now.

Very few people are actually gay, relatively speaking. I think I read once that it's something like 10 percent. On the other hand, a LOT of straight people, the 90 percent, don't really care for the whole gay thing. Many are outright disgusted by it. It's amazing to me that companies think this is a good idea.

Actually, I think most gay people really would prefer to just live normal lives and not get involved in all this LGBT nonsense.
