Thread: Jason Schreier: There are maybe two dozen people with full-time jobs in the video game press right now
These days, no. But it's impossible to ignore they caused significant fuckery and mayhem in this industry. You don't do that without influence and power. These two fell on their swords, but there are another dozen like-minded assholes willing to take their place; people who don't give a shit about gaming but instead want to use it as a vehicle for social contagion.

Sarkeesian had her moment in the sun for sure, but that set a long time back but Mercante is a fucking nobody. Barely 18K followers on X (all her tweets are now protected) and out of a job. She just seemed like an idiot loudmouth no different than Frosk, or Arthur Gies from back in the day. Good to laugh at, but increasingly irrelevant.

That's not to downplay systemic issues with certain outlets, given the inevitability that like hires like, but I just think for the most part the more problematic elements are sidelined and that site reviews are increasingly less relevant in this day and age.

I think it could be argued that the fact that Frosk, Mercante and Gies found themselves in the positions that they did reveals a lot about how these outlets are being run. I would argue that this absolutely does have an influence on the industry.

YouTube dudes are routinely dismissed as grifters while mainstream outlets have their review scores included in aggregators that we even include on threads here as a gauge on the quality of games.

For Sarkeesian, we have to consider that a 28 year old game developer today was 18 years old back in Anita's heyday. If they were always on board with her stuff then it makes sense she would still have influence now.

The individuals have had their day in the sun, sure, but how deep does the influence go?

And now they're nobodies.

Back in the day aggregate review scores used to mean something when company Developer bonuses were tied to them, but publishers learnt from examples like when Jim Sterling infamously gave Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days a score of 1 and tanked its Metacritic as 'payback' to both IOI and Edios for supposedly being directly responsible for the firing of Jeff Gerstmann from GameSpot (which Gerstmann himself later clarified wasn't remotely the truth) that they were giving reviewers far too much power.

And where has that influence gotten them? Name one game that Anita Sakessian influenced that's done incredibly well? TLOU2 according to Druckmann was influenced by her writings, but for all the critical plaudits thrown at it, the financials that leaked as a result of the A/B acquisition raise a question mark as to whether after development costs and marketing that even made a red cent.

Time to re-up on the white pill.
