Thread: It's incredible how many studios are switching to UE5. Big and small, it takes over the industry.
MK11 for example is one of the best looking games ever made. The smooth transitions into gameplay that MK9 introduced were also largely applauded.

Shame that doesn't save the games from being completely forgotten about 2 days after release. All that flair for nothing.

Everything going UE5 sucks big time, photorealism and ray tracing can eat my dick, all AAA games will looks the same from now on.

Edit: didn't realise this was an old thread, otherwise I wouldn't have commented since my thoughts are thankfully already echoed by other users.

Why would you come to such a conclusion? Just scroll up a few posts and look at my examples how vastly different games can look with UE5. You can do absolutely not realistic looking games with RT, or not use RT, you can use sprites, you can go cel shaded or 2D. It's absolutely up to the devs how they'll make their games look.

If they're lazy and only use standard default settings than yes, there'll be a few games that have a similar look. But the engine has pretty much unlimited potential, allowing devs to create unique styles and art.

Warhammer 40k Boltgun doesn't look like your typical UE4 game for example.

If ID got their asses in gear they could have been the unreal engine competition

id used to do that, but after id Tech 4, they decided to keep everything in-house. I think Bethesda probably made them do that, given the last id engine that had their source code released open source was Doom 3 BFG Edition (basically modified id Tech 4).

Shame too, since I much preferred when id Tech was dominant rather than Unreal Engine, since John Carmack always made a policy of releasing the engine source code when a new engine was developed. That allowed mods and source ports to flourish. That will never happen with modern engines, seems like.

It makes sense.
Instead of hiring good engineers and programmers you can outsource to epic and focus on DEI and activists. You can devote more time and money to Sweet Baby and not have to worry about pesky things like engineering your own engine or figuring out how to make your game work.
Just have epic deal with it while devs spend countless hours working on the butt size of your female protagonist.
We are seeing it with Halo. The studio is free now to work on making MasterChief gay instead of optimizing and in house engine. You can hire unqualified people and epic will just troubleshoot all the engine problems

Yup. And that's just game companies! Try companies outside of games. We are using it for our next-gen simulator for real pilots. Several other companies are also using it in the tech sector. Hell, even some VFX studios are using it for developing specialFX.

I think this generation Epic just leap-frogged over all the other gaming companies that used their own engine. When you have such a strong base and can still create your own custom routines and pipelines within Unreal, it saves so much money on development costs. Epic is hiring several VFX folks to further enhance the engine and solve really complicated problems that used to be strictly for off-line rendering. I doubt any of the game companies that have their proprietary engines will be able to compete with that as several million dollars are being thrown at Epic.

ID doesn't have the money or the number of employees to do that. Their chance is over. They won't be able to compete since Epic has become huge (as a company) with millions of dollars to throw at graphics problems.

I meant back in the day ID with cormack.

Now no they cannot.

I thought crytek could have but again. They cannot, good on Epic. They been making games from way way back in the day.

Yea, it's a shame that these smaller studios just don't have enough talent to make something like Unreal. It takes a lot of smart heads and of course that comes with a lot of money.

Funnily enough, if Japan wasn't so protectionist with their thinking/company cultures then Capcom could have made their MT Framework engine, and more recently RE Engine the Unreal of Japan. There were plenty of developers in Japan asking Capcom about licensing the engine back in the 360/PS3 days.

Hopefully Capcom doesn't fall down the UE5 rabbithole as well as they are one of the few Japanese developers using their own modern, continuously updated engine.

Dude that would have been amazing and so much better than ue3 on ps3/360.

Ditto RE engine vs ue4. Ue4 was definitely better than ue3 for its time but still had stutter issues and not nearly as efficient as RE engine
