IGN Entertainment has acquired the Gamer Network family of digital brands for an undisclosed sum.

As a result of the acquisition, some redundancies have been made across the UK-based organisation.

Gamer Network's publications are GamesIndustry.biz, Eurogamer (including six local language editions), Rock Paper Shotgun, VG247 and Dicebreaker. The business also holds shares in Outside Xbox, Digital Foundry and Hookshot (which operates Nintendolife, PushSquare, PureXbox and Time Extension).

IGN Entertainment is the division of Ziff Davis that includes IGN, MapGenie, HowLongToBeat, and Humble Bundle. It has acquired the websites from PAX and New York Comic-Con organiser ReedPop, which initially bought the Gamer Network business in 2018.

Not included in the sale are UK-based events EGX or MCM, or the digital brand Popverse, which remain with ReedPop.

Someone bought them for a lot of money, now wants to make this money back with profit. Prepare for more sponsored content.

Here I was hoping IGN would die soon. This is the opposite of what I wanted. The fuck?

I haven't actively gone to any of those sites in a long long time. Hell, some of them I thought were already dead!

I just realised nearly all outlets I like to click on to get a proper clearnet article of a given topic are under IGN now, so that's nice. I guess I'll start exclusively relying on you guys sharing your Twitter feed here, I just wish more people would copy paste what they share since I can't (and don't want to) access that hemroid of a service to see the post.

Nintendolife is a decent little site. RIP

So far it's stayed out of all the woke crap. Expecting some shite stories soon

Terrible News IMHO. Consolidation of media companies is never a good thing. Game Journalism is notoriously incestuous enough already without a bunch of outlets all being under the same corporation. For the most part I'm generally found IGN to be relatively inoffensive, however their spirited defense of AC Shadows recently has led me to re-appraise that position.

PureXbox is pretty cool too, although I don't keep up with that one a lot since, you know, xbox.

I have a soft spot for these obviously self-advertising outlets for the big 3: PlayStation Access, NintendoLife and Pure Xbox, specifically talking about their youtube channels here. Even though their roles are ultimately to serve the first party's interest, the people working in those channels seem so genuine and look like they love the work that they do.

The layoffs have started. Dicebreaker a Boardgame hobbyist website, staff have been given their marching orders.

Not sure whether that means the site will be shuttered in the long term or whether they plan is to roll Board Game reviews into IGN now, given they've diversified into Games, TV, Film and tech reviews already.

To me, Robert Pearson has always been the best thing about Playstation Access. He's so far beyond the rest of them as an entertainer.

Welp I am betting Nintendolife will get more woke now. I expect some shitty articles, but otherwise it's good stuff. Maybe one or two soapboxes as they call it the rest is news etc without politics,

It's been a good site for years. Full of actual gamers and enthusiasts. I think for ages it was Independent but was good enough that it became the pseudo official Nintendo site in the uk, been reading it since Wii and DS days.

Just to check on the quality post sale
I had a quick scroll through: news articles, Reviews, Facts etc. So it's worth reading

but now I reckon by this time next year. It won't be the same. It will be the click bait articles and random titles about how x is y and why that's a problem. Etc

Time extension is also a top notch site. For retro gaming and interviews. It's the sort of site I would love to have had as a gaming magazine in the 90's. But I am expecting the same decline.

TBH I haven't read IGN in ages. Not sure what state it is in.

Robert S Pearson is the og of course, but I do enjoy the rest of the cast as well, I was saddened when I heard Ash was leaving recently.

I haven't been watching them at all though the past few months, just as I've been using YouTube less and less in general; little to no free time at hand.

Honestly, I haven't watched it in some time either. Partly because I don't play as many Playstation games as I used to. I've kind of moved over to gaming on the Switch. Rob was what originally drew me to the channel though. His weekly features were great, and I loved the end of the Delsin Rodent revenge story line

Since they're following the path of Game Stop, maybe they'll end up mostly reviewing Funko Pops
