Thread: HowLongToBeat Ranking of the most played platforms of 2022. Series X/S behind the PS3.
I think gamepass users just don't care about this website. Probably don't care about finishing games either. Doesn't mean PS3 is more played.

I regret selling my PS3 and feel like buying one again. I wish I could find a functioning OG one that has the PS1 and PS2 hardware but here in my country it seems really hard to find.

Sony did a piss poor job at coming up with a solution for playing PS3 games, what a shame, the option to stream them over PS Now never even made it here.

Just get an actual PS1 and PS2 along with PS3. Will be cheaper probably.

Xbox's handling of legacy software and peripherals really is admirable. Seems like theyre the only ones who give a damn between them, Sony, and Nintendo.

Sony did it pretty well up to the initial PS3 model then they got burned by it and seem like they have a bad attitude towards that to this day. They handled the PS4 BC well but that's it.

Now that we can see a working emulator it's pretty obvious that they could easily do it and I always suspected they are must be running an emulator on their end unless they are really incompetent and are actually still using PS3 hardware and won't be able to scale their service at all.

They suck at PS1 and PS2 retro as well, PlayStation + Premium is an embarrassment, there are no excuses to be so bad at it as they are.

That might be what I'll end up doing (the PS2 can handle the PS1 games) but first I'll need the right CRT TV to set all that up, mine is not with me anymore. My emulator set up is pretty great for pretty much everything pre-PS3 but from what I gathered the PS3 emulator isn't there yet.

@nominedomine

It's always seemed to me like they were more interested in remasters etc
For sure, but that is a very stupid and shortsighted approach, not the type of mindset a company running a gaming platform should have.

If they don't value their own legacy why should we? That's how PC will eventually take over, ironically the best place to play PlayStation games conveniently is the PC at this point.

I find it fascinatingly stupid that they apparently are only interested in retro if they can include trophies, I hate trophies, I'm not in kindergarten anymore and I don't see the purpose in collecting participation stars. If there is one thing I thing Nintendo got right is that they didn't tie themselves to some stupid trophy system that gets int the way of people gaming.

Never even heard of them. Just the amount of people playing fortnite/warzone on new consoles shits on this list.

Couldn't care less for a "poll" on a niche site. Couldn't even be bothered to check the site still lol

They're a lot like Apple in the sense that they're very much invested in controlling their ecosystem and strong arming consumers into playing by their rules. Be it through weird media formats like MiniDisc or proprietary memory cards, etc

Sony makes great electronics however, so it's worth it. I still fanboy for them in the realm of headphones and cameras.

Guess this confirms Gamepass really is the Netflix of gaming.

If you give people infinite choice, and no real investment into anything in particular, they end up paralysed by indecision and choosing nothing.
I watch drastically less movies now than before streaming became a thing and I don't go to the movies anymore. I don't know the exact psychology of it but it seem they lost their value to me or something, I don't feel like the target audience for them anymore.

Services like PS+ and Gamepass had an obvious negative impact in the value I see in games and I think that in a lot of ways they get in the way of me playing what I want (too much choice, apprehension that I might buy something that will be given away soon and regret it, etc).

That says more about the HLTB user base than about Xbox popularity.
This is the only thing i can take away from this. It goes without saying that the PS3 isn't more popular than XSSX, so at most it's an interesting insight into the niche audience of that particular website and people that choose to use it for what I can only guess is logging backlog progress.

There was something special about stopping at a store in the way home, looking at physical games and picking something up to play.

It's paralysis of choice. Same reason why you never end up playing much upon downloading an emulator and full rom set. Steam backlogs are a perfect example also.

I'm already completely overwhelmed by choice when looking at my library + PS extra as well and I keep playing new games I buy.
Aye, on a serious note, learning not to buy shit you don't need is a great way to actually enjoy a hobby more than getting everything your heart desires, even if you can easily afford it.

It's entirely counter intuitive, but you really can have too much of a good thing.

In this case I'm not even buying them, they are being "given away", since I already had PS+ and MS keeps offering me Gamepass for 1$. I don't know how sharing Gamepass works but I share all my subscription services with someone who pays for Gamepass (and never uses it lmao).

The ones I actually buy I tend not regret, unless they are put it on a service before I even played it then it feels like a waste (a big reason why I avoid digital and why I'm only willing to pay for them on Steam promos).

I still have an OG 60 gig, but I never use it because I want to keep it pristine. I have two slims and another one that is non working. I went on a PS3 playing tear last year. It's a system that I feel time has been pretty kind to.

I don't know how representative this survey is of the market overall, but on face value it's pretty bad news for GamePass. I won't hide my disdain for it; I think GP is butt cancer to this hobby and I hope it fails. On the other hand, as a Series X owner, I hope Microsoft's system does well and we see some killer content on it.

The site primarily serves as a reference tool if you're wondering how long it will take to play certain games to completion. Helps when deciding what to play/purchase next. As a result, they do skew towards a more retro enthusiast crowd. It's very niche, as you stated

I would imagine GP members might not be well represented in this survey, because they probably flit around from game to game because they can. Also,I wonder if it would still track if a GP member completes a game even after it's no longer on GP?

Their data is self-reported, so I would say "ranking the most played platforms among gaming enthusiasts". I mean... it doesn't really change the implications of the poll.

I never had one back in the day but picked up an og one, hacked it and added a fat drive. It's beautiful.

What a sausage fest lmao. Also considering the autism on such sites, I bet half of those "females" have a Y chromosome.

Not sure if the users care or not, but the HowLongToBeat stats are embedded right in the game pages on GamePass (PC at least).

I've looked at HowLongtoBeat a few times to get an idea of a purchase before jumping in, but I have never once thought of actually recording my data on the site. This speaks volumes about their primary audience and little more. My main takes from this data are:

1. XBox probably attracts a more casual crowd. You have to be pretty invested in a hobby to be interested in recording that type of data. It seems that the XBox audience just doesn't tick that box. They undoubtedly have a higher active player base than PS3.
2. Female gamers are much less likely to record these sorts of data than male gamers.

Neither of these two conclusions are a surprise to me. I may not have assumed PS3 would beat Series X, but its not a huge surprise to me based on my assumed audience for each console.
