Thread: Hostile Faceoff: Controller vs Mouse & Keyboard

Which is the most enjoyable way to play games?

It really depends on the game.

Controller - Platformers, fighters, racers and (Usually) 3rd Person action games

K/M - Everything else... and sometimes 3rd Person action games

Fighters actually work extremely well with keyboard. It's like a hit box (that people refer to as cheat box) with more buttons.

Just recorded this myself to show off some gyro gameplay.

I pretty much didn't use the right stick at all.

Agree gyro is a good compensator for getting precision, but it doesn't give you quite the exact physical location and muscle memory of a mouse. Big fan of it though - used it a lot for archery in BOTW.

Gyro can do that, especially the kind you can configure to your exact needs like steam input. BOTW gyro doesn't really compare.

I have a Steam Deck so I'm well aware of its capabilities. BOTW gyro was bloody good for the job at hand, but I still consider a mouse a better way to work.

Most of controller voters never knew better.

The opposite is true. A keyboard and mouse is essential for PC use, a controller is an optional investment. Gamers are going out of their way for a better, richer, experience! Good for them 💕

You are assuming that most people have actually used/own a PC (rather than just a console).

I love gyro but it's having a difficult time getting a foot hold when rotational aim assist is even better for hit scan weapons on fps games than a mouse and the fact that Xbox controllers don't have a gyroscope.

Considering most of my favorite games are RTS, RPG, simulators, and all kinds of complex thingamabobbery with 100500 hotkeys, I honestly can't say I prefer playing games with a controller.

There are some things a controller is better for, like emulators - because it's the intended way to play there - but for the vast majority of stuff I play, it's KB&M.

I have a Steam Deck so I'm well aware of its capabilities.

Have you used them though? I don't have a steam deck so I just use the steam desktop app for gyro functionality. Some people say Joyshockmapper is better but Steam Input is more intuitive imo.

It was decent, but it definitely feels less responsive that proper gyro aim. Felt like there was some input lag, prob bc of the 30fps lock.

but I still consider a mouse a better way to work.

If we're talking general use mouse and keyboard is obviously better, and there is a certain level of utility that can ONLY be attributed to k &m play. You just can't get the same level of functionality, esp if you work/play at a high level.

I've tried my best, but theres no way for me to emulate high level DOOM Eternal play on a controller. You simply don't have the level of freedom and speed with a controller to do combos with. I can hotkey through my entire weapon catalogue at lightspeed on k & m but lose a ton of speed trying the same on controller, even with optimised control schemes.

So I guess it depends on the games too. That said you can still do some cool shit with gyro that you can't with k & m, like emulating a steering wheel with the controller for racing games.

Im trying Gyro controls and I'm already annoyed how much I have to move my hands. Feels like I'm playing a VR game. It would need to be super sensitive, like me, for it work.

Try turning on acceleration, and raising your sensitivity. You'll get used to not having to move your hands much, make sure you're ratcheting the gyro too. If you're having problems with shaky aim when pulling the trigger on high sens, set the trigger style to hair trigger, lower the soft pull point to its minimum, do the same with the trigger range start, and change the trigger response curve to aggressive. Then you can use light presses to active the trigger, resulting in minimal movement of the controller when pulling the trigger. Some people try to mitigate this issue by setting the right bumper to fire their weapons, but I prefer the feeling of pressing the trigger to shoot.

If it's too much of a learning curve/prefer low sens on the gyro, you can still use the right analog stick as usual, and set the gyro to active when pulling the left trigger to aim, and only use the gyro to make small aim adjustments that are hard to pull off with the analog.

Part of the fun of it all is customizing and tweaking settings to find what works for you. I personally play on a very high sens and use light movements to control the gyro, and fast movements using ratcheting to quickly change the look direction before aiming.

Cheers for all the info. It's ok at 400% sensitivity but I'm not sure how much I'm gaining as I was already pretty good with standard controls. That said you get use to what you use so I'll keep going with it an hour or so longer :).

Gyro on the deck actually made me like gyro. I thought it was dogshit on the switch tbh. Idk what it was, but it felt like it lost zero really easily and it didn't keep the same sens.

Regardless, mouse is still 10,000 times better.
