Thread: Have you ever participated in a Kickstarter?
Hype Thread
If so what product did you choose, at what level and how did it turn out?

Just Shenmue 3 for me at the base game level ($25 I think). I was pretty satisfied, it didn't rock my world but I can't complain given the price point.

Interested in other people's experiences.
This reminds me that I want to continue that game! First Shenmue game so I'm missing out on previous games but still really enjoyed my time with what I did play of 3

Back on topic, I backed the standard tier of ToeJam and Earl: Back in the Groove and I think NightCry and basic tier of Swery's The Good Life. ToeJam and Earl was neat yet difficult, at least at the time I tried it. Maybe balancing patches were released so I should check on that

Kickstarted Godus (trainwreck) and Grim Dawn (awesome)
I'm a lot more picky now, with gamepass, EGS free games and steam sales it's a difficult sale to kickstart a game, unless it is a genre/game that I think is really underserved it just doesn't make much sense anymore.

I backed what was the pro tier device a couple of years ago. The moment that my wife noticed that I've spent some cash on that shit she got so mad. i mean so mad that she scared me away and I decided to ask for a refund the day after. Thing is this device hasn't released yet and we have the GPD Win likes floating around for a couple of years. So I guess I dodged a bullet there .

No, never. It was kind alright back when it started, but only for the first couple of years. Then people started taking the piss.
I think Roberts destroyed the kickstarter with his nonsense. And nowadays, there is so much choice that betting on a product that might or might not get released (mostly talking about game) seems odd to me.

Only Shenmue 3, although I was kind of disappointed with the final result. At times it seems great just like old Shenmue, but the stupid food/stamina mechanic really ruins it.

The combat also took a massive hit and really feels bare-bones unfun to play. Which is a real pity.

There are other parts of the game that feel very low budget or lacking but that was to be expected. The actual graphics themselves are fine for the budget, people were way overblowing how bad the graphics look but that is just the hype/hate cycle in action.

Can't really say I would kickstart anything again to be honest...

Yeah I bought some of the earliest Kickstarter videogames as well as boardgames. FTL, Banner Saga, Wasteland 2, Project Eternity, Star Citizen, and Torment come to mind. I liked the idea and I was happy to try it out.

Then I stopped bbacking videogames. Didn't really see more of what I liked, I wasn't playing on PC anymore and wanted physical (which was largely on boutique sites at that point), and so I shifted attention to boardgame kickstarters. The bigger ones were Tokaido, Blood Rage, Roll Through the Ages: Iron Age, Orleans, Omen: Reign of War, Above and Below, a few of the Tiny Epic card games. Most recent videogame I backed was W101 but otherwise I don't pay attention to the platform much anymore.

Two games and it turned out fine.

First one was Everspace, which I liked quite a bit. Looked amazing and was fun. Hyped for the sequel.

Second one was GRIP, that spiritual Rollcage successor. I enjoyed the game and still play it from time to time.

Have only supported one Kickstarter game, Yooka-Laylee. I was so hard up for a good 3d platformer and they had some folks with the right experience. They communicated well the whole time and the final game was delivered and it was exactly as promised.

I didn't play Everspace until the physical release on PS4 many months/years later, but dang is it a solid game. Simple and addictive. It has elements of Descent (old PC franchise) and Terminal Velocity / FURY3, with a dash of Wing Commander / Tie Fighter. They nailed it. Can't wait to see what they do with an open world.

Yep, I've backed one game, which has yet to release. But, they are making progress and posting updates so I'm not concerned.

The Iron Oath - I backed at $75, which gets me two copies of the game and my name as an NPC.

Nice - I have the second game in EA right now. It's pretty good, tbh.

I've done a number of Kickstarters, but most of them have been board games (which have all turned out fine). I tend to think that video game Kickstarters are more likely to underestimate what is actually required to release a product to market.

Of the video game projects I've backed one has most likely failed.

I don't give to product crowdfunds out of principle. When I pay money I want to get a product, not just a nonbinding "promise" that they might give me something at an indeterminate point in the future.

The number of kickstarter/indiegogo games that have either never come out, or have come out and been trash, have affirmed my decision.

That isn't to say crowdfund games are bad, there are plenty examples that I love. But prudence and skepticism are key when the dev has no obligation whatsoever to meet your expectations.

That said, I was very close to giving money to suda51's The Good Life when it seemed like it wouldn't reach its goal. That, too, is still in development with no firm release date, so it might be for the best that I didn't.

I backed a few back in the day during the early Kickstarter Honeymoon period. I kickstarted Pillars of Eternity. I can't remember exactly how high but enough to acquire codes for two copies of the game IIRC. I also backed Kingdom Come Deliverance, enough to get the game and DLCs as well as beta Access (not that I have the time for such things) one of the Banner Saga games (either 2 or 3) and I may have back Godus as well, as I have always have had a soft sport for Molyneux even if he is a bit of a maniac. Since then nothing has really jumped out at me and tbh I think that Kickstarter funding might work well for certain things, but I'm not sure about Video games so much these days. It's usually used as a means to raise funds to demonstrate a market desire in order to secure further funding from venture capitalists or publishers, which is all well and good if you manage to secure those additional funds, but otherwise means projects go nowhere.

If I had money I'd consider it but it'd need to be something I really wanted to have happen like a really good Deus Ex remake in the vein of that System Shock one coming out or something.

Yeah, a bunch of stuff in those earlier days.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Massive Chalice, Dreamfall Chapters, Project Eternity, Shadowrun Returns, The Banner Saga, Wasteland 2, Double Fine Adventure.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is the only one I'm really glad I backed.

No, almost did. Some indie diorama-esque game of which I can't pronounce the name of or remember how to spell.

I did a few:

Broken Age
Big disappointment for me, but it was one of the first gaming Kickstarters so in a way it paved the road for future successes.

Pillars of Eternity
Great game, enjoyed it a ton. Set the stage for a resurgence of cRPGs.

Shadowrun: Hong Kong
After playing SR: Returns and enjoying the hell out if I was easily down for more! I thought it turned out really good though not as good as Dragonfall. Too bad they stopped making these and switched to Battletech which wasn't of interest to me.

Divinity: Original Sin 1 & 2
I backed both and would gladly back a third, fourth, fifth... Some of the best games around IMO. I bought in to BG3 Early Access as well.

Reaper Miniatures
Not a game but I backed the first round of these haha. Probably a waste of my money since I don't even use them. I wonder if they have resale value?

Reading the other Kickstarter thread I realised I also backed Kentucky Route Zero back in the day. Great game but goddamn it was a long wait between Acts.
